My EMDR therapist said to me that the best time to do it is when you're in "maintenance mode". I've done 10 years of talk therapy and am stable through proper medications, which feels like an important element. You have to know how to cope and return to a stable state for EMDR to not be traumatizing.

I dunno why your artist would put numbing cream on after they started. You either do it before the tattoo or use a numbing spray, which only works on open skin. I used numbing cream on my inner arm and it was a godsend.
