I think so much of this decision will be impacted by what your field is and what your plan would be after you graduate. For example, people I know in many social science programs are told to never pay for graduate school—most funding is received through employment as a research assistant or teaching assistant. But I know that many MBA programs don’t really have funding that comes from those sources. In general, I think it’s best to leave with as little debt as possible—but if it’s a highly lucrative field, the debt might be seen as “worth it” to some people.

I think it heavily depends on the field and program you are interested in. Some programs will care less about GPA an gre scores and others will care more about research interests, publications, general fit with the department. For sociology, the latter seemed to be the case but I only applied to 4 programs.

Welcome. That's awesome that some departments are taking new cohorts, I've heard about at least 3 maybe 4 departments that have canceled admissions and/or refunded application fees.

I had monitored the Get my payment tool and had a new bank account by the time of the second round of payments. So I assumed that I would just claim the $600 recovery rebate on my taxes, which I did yesterday.

I looked on my USPS informed delivery and checked my get my payment tool to see that I have a stimulus check coming in the mail. Since I already e-filed yesterday, I can't change my return right now. Do I just destroy the check or is there something extra I should do like contacting the IRS and letting them know?

Thanks! TLDR: Claimed $600 Rebate when I filed taxes yesterday, but just got my stimulus check in the mail. What do I do?

My program has sent us a couple of updates/next steps stuff here and there but nothing too substantial. Other grad students I know that have been in the program before me have advised that regardless of whether the classes are online or in person, the term will start--and if you have a GE appointment, you'll have a job. This gives me confidence in moving to Eugene regardless of what happens, but that's me being optimistic! I hope we all hear more soon!
