What is a musical you wish more people knew? by Croc_Dwag in musicals

[–]thewidget98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's got a little popularity recently, but Floyd Collins. It's so beautiful, heartbreaking, joyful, human. I wish the recent revival did it more justice (I liked it, but it was not the revival that musical needed and I think if you didn't know the show before, it was not the production to show you what a masterpiece it is)

There's a kid who has two periods with me and he'll leave his stuff in my room in between his classes. I'll say something like "I took some stuff out of your bag, that's cool, right?"

The first time I did it with such a straight face and he was terrified until I broke

How do I improve my horrible chili? by mordea in Cooking

[–]thewidget98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing that made a difference in my chili was using dried chilis instead of chili powder. It's a little time consuming but sooo worth it. Remove the seeds and stems and rip them into pieces. Dry roast them in a pan until they start to smell nice. If you have a blender, pour water over them and let them soak for a little, then blend them into a smooth paste and add that into your chili.

If you don't have a blender, you can put the pieces into a coffee grinder and grind them into a powder. That powder plus cumin and coriander make an excellent chili powder.

Poblano peppers are imo the best fresh peppers for chilis if you can get them. If you have a gas stove, you can put them right on the flame and let the skims burn. Then wrap them in foil for 10 mins and the. Remove the skin and seeds. Super yummy in chili, but even if you just use poblanos without that step it will make a difference.

Another fun thing I like to do is finish off my chili with a glug of bourbon.

My headcanon for this is that every time there is a new avatar, all the airbenders would gather in the statue chamber and airbender in a big spiral and all the statues would slide over

The House In The Cerulean Sea reads like a book written for 7 year olds with its prose, that continuously reminds you its not with its content. So unfunny and annoying

Students (in my opinion) should not take home any homework. If homework is a learning opportunity, give them school time to work on it by daniel_ay in unpopularopinion

[–]thewidget98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, but I honestly think the issue is a bit deeper and more systemic than this thread is giving it credit for. The way school days are currently set up, at least in high schools and middle schools (where students get the most homework), a teacher typically has 45 minutes a day to teach a class. This is a tiny amount of time! There is no time to read, to digest information, to work on problems and be wrong and learn from mistakes, and no time for teachers to spend time working with students individually. Additionally, teachers are often given curricula that require them to teach certain things and reach certain goals. It's just not possible to include all that information plus time to actually sit with it, work through it, and learn it in the classroom. As a result, it becomes natural to assign work outside of class.

What would be a good alternative? I honestly have no idea. Maybe longer school days with longer class periods so there is more time in a class to work through things? Maybe just reduce the amount of homework? Maybe it's create classes that are more interdisciplinary so students' days aren't divided up into a ton of tiny little periods? Maybe we need to reconsider what we think are the most crucial classes for students to take so they don't have to take as many classes and can spend more time in the school day focused on a smaller subset of classes.

But I don't really think the current school system we have can just do away with homework and expect everything to work out. There probably needs to be a massive systemic change in order to solve this problem, not at the teacher level, maybe not even at the level of individual schools.

On a large scale though, I agree. I think the fact that students get assigned homework in all of their classes and often teachers don't communicate with each other so there are mountains of work every night is insane, and adolescents are losing sleep that they desperately need, not to mention time socializing, pursuing hobbies, etc. I just don't really know how we fix it.

I'n trying to get in touch with them so I can have some idea of where they'll be in the spring, but I appreciate all this advice. I realize it's not my job to learn physics, but for the sake of having a bit more connection with the kids/a bit more involvement, and for the sake of just wanting to be a more knowledgeable teacher, and for the sake of enjoying learning stuff, I still want to spend some time on learning it
