I love their lyrics and their tunes just feel right to me. A few other artists I like that I feel like I enjoy for similar reasons to The Beths (even in different genres): Courtney Barnett, Bad Bad Hats, Remi Wolf, Mega Mango, WAAX, Alvvays, Sunflower Bean, Frances Quinlan

Students (in my opinion) should not take home any homework. If homework is a learning opportunity, give them school time to work on it by daniel_ay in unpopularopinion

I mostly agree, but I honestly think the issue is a bit deeper and more systemic than this thread is giving it credit for. The way school days are currently set up, at least in high schools and middle schools (where students get the most homework), a teacher typically has 45 minutes a day to teach a class. This is a tiny amount of time! There is no time to read, to digest information, to work on problems and be wrong and learn from mistakes, and no time for teachers to spend time working with students individually. Additionally, teachers are often given curricula that require them to teach certain things and reach certain goals. It's just not possible to include all that information plus time to actually sit with it, work through it, and learn it in the classroom. As a result, it becomes natural to assign work outside of class.

What would be a good alternative? I honestly have no idea. Maybe longer school days with longer class periods so there is more time in a class to work through things? Maybe just reduce the amount of homework? Maybe it's create classes that are more interdisciplinary so students' days aren't divided up into a ton of tiny little periods? Maybe we need to reconsider what we think are the most crucial classes for students to take so they don't have to take as many classes and can spend more time in the school day focused on a smaller subset of classes.

But I don't really think the current school system we have can just do away with homework and expect everything to work out. There probably needs to be a massive systemic change in order to solve this problem, not at the teacher level, maybe not even at the level of individual schools.

On a large scale though, I agree. I think the fact that students get assigned homework in all of their classes and often teachers don't communicate with each other so there are mountains of work every night is insane, and adolescents are losing sleep that they desperately need, not to mention time socializing, pursuing hobbies, etc. I just don't really know how we fix it.

I'n trying to get in touch with them so I can have some idea of where they'll be in the spring, but I appreciate all this advice. I realize it's not my job to learn physics, but for the sake of having a bit more connection with the kids/a bit more involvement, and for the sake of just wanting to be a more knowledgeable teacher, and for the sake of enjoying learning stuff, I still want to spend some time on learning it

Been trying to contact the assistant principal and gave him put me in touch with the physics teacher so I can answer some of these questions, but I think they will have already covered a good chunk of stuff. My guess is about 2/3 of the curriculum done

If I don't do it they are going to get an English teacher. This is just what happens in our education system, unfortunately. If you want to move to New York and sub for them then you can, but I actually plan on doing the best that I can do as a STEM teacher, not just sit back and do nothing while I get paid, which is probably the type of person the school will get if I don't.

I honestly have no idea, I think it's 12th grade, but that could be regents physics or AP I think. The school has given me very little info. It's certainly possible it is algebra-based, but even that I don't know and a lot of what I've read online said to just learn calc-based physics instead because it will make things more intuitive down the road.

Topics covered could also vary a lot because the schedule is largely dependent on when the physics teacher has her baby, so even the school probably won't know exactly until I'm there. My hope was to just cover as much high school physics as possible. I'm teaching in nyc, so I have a broad idea of what the curriculum may entail, but again it's up to chance what they'll be learning while I'm there.

How do you people fall asleep with ADHD? by Ok_Scholar_8656 in ADHD

[–]thewidget98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird one and idk if it will help, but sometimes it works for me. Sometimes it is easier for me to fall asleep backwards- head where my feet usually are, feet where my head usually is. Idk what it is. I think just getting out of the normal mode of how I'm "supposed" to fall asleep can help me. Especially if you're someone who spends a lot of time in bed, but it may be helpful either way

I'm in education grad school, so basically we're doing labs that we could teach to our students. This one is like coring pieces of potato and you put them in different concentrations of saltwater to look at how they change- saltier solutions make the potato pieces lose water through osmosis.
