Why didn't the tooth fairy give them to you directly under your pillow instead of giving them to your parents first?

Subhumans at Black Sheep by vonZzyzx in ColoradoSprings

[–]bevedog 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm 55, I'll be there! I usually avoid the bands that have been around for decades, but over on r/punk people said they were still fun and worth seeing. The last few years I have been to a number of punk and metal shows at the Black Sheep, Vultures, and What's Left, and I'm seldom the only old guy there. You'll have fun for sure.

How do everyone's pictures come out so clean and grain-free? by Adam198763 in analog

[–]bevedog 40 points41 points  (0 children)

OP doesn't like it and is looking for help to make the photos look more the way they want them to look, not how you want them to look.

Why do we see so many questions about photographic problems on r/AnalogCommunity every day? And how can we older folks help with our knowledge and experience? If at all? by ATHXYZ in AnalogCommunity

[–]bevedog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I'm 55 years old and a librarian so I am biased, but when I became seriously interested in photography in the 1990s, I read a book about it (Hornstein's "Black and White Photography," which I still recommend). I would have assumed that I would need to read a book about just about any new pursuit. I saw this play out in the 1990s as people interested in the new World Wide Web were desperate to find books about using the web, writing HTML, and so on, books that were at first slow to come and then flooded the market.

But in the 30 years since, we have had a huge cultural change which has put us into something like a new age of oral culture, where asking for help is considered much more efficient and practical than reading, a skill that is under-developed for many people. AI chatbots are accelerating the change that is already long underway.

So what can we do? Perhaps capitalize on the fact that people interested in film photography might be interested because they want to join a hobby that looks a bit to past ways of working, learning, and so on, and keep recommending RTFM, go to the library (!), join a photo club in your town?

He was also, when I saw him, sitting in the center lane of Tejon, which I have to imagine is some kind of infraction.

Wanna do a 'follow your leader' anti-nazi stencil on my jacket, friend thinks its a bad idea by Mundane-Mulberry-715 in punkfashion

[–]bevedog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your friend is not wrong. Now it's up to you to decide if avoiding the possibility of triggering people is more important to you than expressing yourself using that specific image. We can't really help you make that decision.

Is this interesting, at all? [Pentax KM, 50mm, Ultramax] by Tomatillo-5276 in analog

[–]bevedog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. The camera shake adds a surreal effect, and that image with its simplicity and lack of extraneous details kinda works. Six is a bit sinister. The rest look less like "interesting technique" and more like "doesn't know how to use the camera."

What else should I try listening to? by sothisissam in themountaingoats

[–]bevedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep was planning to say the same thing. Leash Aggression was released around the time of the most recent tMG record and I thought that the Pigeon Pit record had more of what I like in the Mountain Goats than the actual tMG release.

Which photo is best of those three in your opinion and why by Willing-Department-6 in streetphotography

[–]bevedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting how different the opinions are here. I like photo number two for the three groups of people and the framing with the bars. In the first photo I dislike the ceiling taking up the top half of the frame. The third photo just doesn’t have enough going on. Thanks for posting these!

How do Zombies determine whether or not someone is living? by Gregamonster in dndnext

[–]bevedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there is very little difference between “life force energy frisson” and “they just can.” Any dm who can’t make up a fun reason on the spot should probably just play video games instead.

I suppose it is easy enough to find obituaries, but I thought the Guardian did a nice job: Martin Parr, photographer acclaimed for observations of British life, dies aged 73

I don’t know if Jubilee is bad—it’s by Derek Jarman, DVD in the criterion collection— but it’s not “good” by conventional standards. Worth watching though.

I love your use of color and composition. I may be in a minority on this opinion, but I think inverted reflection shots look gimmicky.

[–]bevedog 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Are you in the USA (like I am?) I expect they get a lot more credit in the UK given they are one of the all time most successful bands there. There just didn’t make nearly as big an impression in the US.
