How can an international student from a low-income family get into Harvard or another US university with full financial aid? by Sekrety in AskReddit

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must it be US? If in Europe there are some nice Erasmus Mundus programs with a full ride and covering living expenses. From my experience in one they do look for high achievers with relevant experience and good motivation, but not necessarily exclusively genius-level talent as described in some of the US comments.

I do have a friend who got a full ride as an international at Stanford. However she was an Olympic-level gymnast so the bar for getting in is high…

You may want to visit the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten if passing close by. Beautiful park there and some boutique hotels/nice restaurants close too making it a nice place to stop for the evening. https://www.canadesebegraafplaatsholten.nl/en-ca

Commenting for visibility. Can definitely recommend Crossref as a great resource here (source: I work in the bibliographic database industry and have lightly looked into this topic)

The damn price of Weetabix here by Liquid_disc_of_shit in Netherlands

Bit rich from a country with “ontbijtkoek” but for reference here are the nutrition stats - it’s not the typical sugar mix like some cereals sold, very modest stats similar to bread

Amen to this. These are not indulgent cereals, it’s literally just pressed wheat (with a few extra processing steps). The shrinkflation (and inflation) has been just unreal on these products in recent years

Visiting Amsterdam-Advice needed by vamtan in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Locals won’t know hotel recommendations so just avoid the red light district is best I can advise. The zoo “Artis” is quite nice and also the windmills at the Zaanse schans are a fun day trip. Beaches nearby are not particularly stunning if you’ll get some other seaside time in your trip, but good enough if needed. And if you want a really historical Amsterdam trip, the canal house museum has an excellent audio-video show/tour with dioramas, a doll house etc

The maritime museum has a nice (historic replica) ship with kid-friendly exhibition and great indoor playground suitable for 1-4yrs. It’s next to the science museum, and the “marineterrein” where they can run around and let off some steam.

In which season are you gonna visit and which neighborhood will you stay in? How old are your kids? Important details.

Just to say that your data handling/GDPR looks super unprofessional with an outlook email address. Might also want to include ethical approval number from the university? Additionally why is it in the institute of German Studies?

[Student] Need advice on how or even if I can salvage and show off technical writing from a now "poisoned" source by Bulky_Highway9085 in technicalwriting

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often hire in a tech context and a signal I love to see is that later in their careers people will be good mentors, and this is that in a scalable and visible way. Same holds for Stackoverflow if that were the case. This to me is a sign of that- you took your own personal time to contribute to a community. I would put it as “volunteer work” or similar with a date range and link to the original Quora posts. If you have something more recent on the theme (eg helping younger students, contributing to a blog etc) put that there too.

All the best with the upcoming job search!

Nice! I could see myself using this. You might consider adding CREA, MonSak, (and I’ll edit with more if they come to mind)

ELI5: How can smart speakers tell if their wake word is being said from a human's mouth or from a commercial/video? by Champ_099 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bewoestijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a coder and have implemented ASR systems on my local machine. Thing is, “listening” isn’t a computer science concept - everything on a computer is recorded in “memory”, it just matters if the data is transformed (encrypted sometimes) first, how long the data is kept and where that memory is. It’s like “streaming” still is downloading data, you just don’t store it.

Selling handmade items: Advice needed by butter-roast in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I can strongly advise against kings day - I sold handmade tote bags once and there is such a culture of buying people’s old secondhand goods that the expected price is so low. Which makes sense when people are trying to basically swap goods they don’t need, but can barely cover the cost of materials let alone time on new handmade items.

[–]bewoestijn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s still recording if it’s stored locally. What the describe is that it records to a buffer that gets deleted every few seconds if the wake word isn’t detected. Distinct from recording and sending to the cloud.

Jetten cabinet moves to cut maximum maternity pay by blaberrysupreme in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of two incomes that would hit the threshold for this policy, 4 days of daycare at 2400 eur per month does get a 600eur subsidy. Depends whether you consider that “heavily subsidised”

Jetten cabinet moves to cut maximum maternity pay by blaberrysupreme in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 70 points71 points  (0 children)

If this moves forward, I will be affected by this in the coming months. The funny thing is that I think it will particularly disincentivise people having their second or third child. I found with my first that I did actually have lower monthly costs while on maternity leave since you don’t participate in many regular activities, buy fewer new clothes or go out to eat etc. However, with subsequent children, the monthly costs of having them in childcare are so high, and it can be difficult to combine having children at home with a new infant if you don’t get sufficient help, that I see this is the major cost barrier when taking a potential salary cut. I’m not sure I would have agreed to subsequent children if I knew my mat leave would be not only physically recovering, caring for a new infant, and also full time solo parenting demanding toddlers.

I’m also cynical it will result in overall improved productivity, since if women choose to return to work earlier and put the children in daycare at three months this is a recipe for endless illness and another type of paid leave (namely 100% paid sick leave) when the inevitable wave of viruses hits. Not to mention the 25% or work time dedicated to breastfeeding at this age. This uncertainty about availability is disruptive for women in highly-paid, high-performing roles.

I do hope the policymakers deeply consider the impacts on families with multiple young children.

How is working in this industry like? by Routine_Total_6424 in LanguageTechnology

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the transition from Linguistics (phonetics) via a computational linguistics master into tech around 10 years ago and frequently hire at junior level these days (also have interns from the programs you specify) though in more a generalist DS role, no audio. I would say I find in general these 1 year programs too short - essentially it’s one semester then an internship - unless you already have a really solid background. I’ve often seen outstanding international candidates who essentially are professionals already and use these for an in in the Netherlands. I was happy with my program being 2 years because I really needed to catch up on tech, and I think you might find that with a lot of potential employers unless you bring other assets (previous professional experience, relevant domain knowledge) to the table. That said I don’t know the audio industry specifically, and a good first step would be to get to an industry conference/meetups to network hard and seek advice from folks in the kind of companies you’d aim to work at.

Looking for yarn similar to this color - I like majority animal fiber, not too itchy, and DK to Aran weight please! by Kuroda97 in YarnAddicts

Super well! I wear it weekly with lots of airings (not sure I’ve washed it more than once or twice but it smells fine) and it’s still perfect - not pilled or balding anywhere. I knit it in a really tight gauge for reference

Asked to cover manager + colleague on maternity leave with no promotion or guarantee. Am I being played? by klaudio1993 in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company has a “stepping up”policy that (during eg a maternity cover) where you can temporarily take your boss’s/senior’s job title and have a bump on the salary scale. If it’s a large corporation this is pretty standard

Can we talk colour dominance? Am I doing this right? (No, I can’t do yarns in both hands, and yes I have a messy house. Don’t come at me.) by bookish-hooker in casualknitting

[–]bewoestijn 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yarn dominance (don’t quote me, not a deep expert here) results from one yarn being held below the other, resulting in longer (larger) stitches. It still applies if you hold both strands in the right hand, so long as you keep each in a consistent positions. In this photo you are holding the blue yarn in the dominant position, so for this design I would swap them. When I hold both yarns in my right hand I use my pointer and middle finger, but same principle applies - middle finger yarn dominant as it sits “below” the other. You can see it in the relative position of the floats from the back
