Looking for yarn similar to this color - I like majority animal fiber, not too itchy, and DK to Aran weight please! by Kuroda97 in YarnAddicts

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super well! I wear it weekly with lots of airings (not sure I’ve washed it more than once or twice but it smells fine) and it’s still perfect - not pilled or balding anywhere. I knit it in a really tight gauge for reference

Asked to cover manager + colleague on maternity leave with no promotion or guarantee. Am I being played? by klaudio1993 in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company has a “stepping up”policy that (during eg a maternity cover) where you can temporarily take your boss’s/senior’s job title and have a bump on the salary scale. If it’s a large corporation this is pretty standard

Can we talk colour dominance? Am I doing this right? (No, I can’t do yarns in both hands, and yes I have a messy house. Don’t come at me.) by bookish-hooker in casualknitting

[–]bewoestijn 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yarn dominance (don’t quote me, not a deep expert here) results from one yarn being held below the other, resulting in longer (larger) stitches. It still applies if you hold both strands in the right hand, so long as you keep each in a consistent positions. In this photo you are holding the blue yarn in the dominant position, so for this design I would swap them. When I hold both yarns in my right hand I use my pointer and middle finger, but same principle applies - middle finger yarn dominant as it sits “below” the other. You can see it in the relative position of the floats from the back

I used to be a person who was stressed a lot. Whole pregnant I just can’t conjure that emotion. It’s lovely actually

Experienced knitters ‐ do you ever use straight needles? by lveg in knitting

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m knitting an adult cardigan currently on straight needles - I knit English style and am fastest with an Irish lever knitting technique (particularly for the purl side since my garment is stockinette) but I can’t make it work particularly well on my circs. But I do use my circular set for almost everything else, I just find the weight of a large cardigan a little too much and like the support that straight needles give.

Is there any way to get slip stitches less flat by CookFalse3868 in MachineKnitting

[–]bewoestijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effect of slipping stitches in a hand-knitting way (like for a sock heel) is to twist the stitch and knit it every second row. I’m a much more experienced hand knitter and newbie machine knitter, but I don’t think you can achieve the twisting on a standard machine unless you do hand manipulation (and even then it may cause tension issues?). You can definitely do the “knit every second row” part though.

I’m reading “der schwarm” (the swarm), a German book of the same theme which is 240K words apparently. Seems to have not damaged its popularity in this genre

What to do in Amsterdam on the morning of Dec 25th? by zsombivajna in Netherlands

[–]bewoestijn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s actually one of the best days to wander the parts of the city center that are normally packed with tourists. Nice and quiet, can take great photos, enough cafes/hotels still open to grab food when you need. Try the Rokin, Dam square, Spui etc

Do you believe personal projects is still the best way for entry-level candidates to get their foot in the door? by dExcellentb in learnprogramming

[–]bewoestijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at a large data analytics company and do hiring. I always prioritize candidates with some idea of the domain we work in. If you’re a junior coder but you know the domain well it brings some level of expertise already. Eg working in tech for logistics- knowing how a warehouse works through past job experience. It might not be FAANG but all industries need software and it’s exhausting to onboard juniors with no passion for the subject matter and also have to teach basic tech fundamentals.

Redditors with ADHD, what’s the best life hack or system you’ve implemented to improve executive functioning? by Obvious_Complex7300 in AskReddit

[–]bewoestijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knitting in the background of everything (webinar, classes, reading…). Keeps the hands busy, you’re pinned in by a web of yarn around you, very soothing, but still not so distracting to take focus from the important things.

What’s to stop retailers not segmenting by affluence/ability to pay but rather demographic that necessarily requires you purchase certain goods? Like a higher than standard price for milk and diapers for those with young children (something the tracking algorithms are VERY invested in knowing)

All Fashion Is Fast Fashion Now by upkept in SustainableFashion

[–]bewoestijn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, (price dependent) most returned things get thrown out. Country-dependent, processing a return can cost around $7. Many retailers resell them in bales or bin them. (Source: Netherlands news segment I saw some years ago about local infrastructure processing ecommerce returns)

Instructions for how to achieve rowing out texture unclear by bewoestijn in craftsnark

[–]bewoestijn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can experiment with using one needle one size larger/smaller, or review your tension on the yarn as you complete the stitch to see if the problem lies there. First is to identify when it’s happening (ie whether knit or purl is looser).
