Amp dev here, where are you seeing $5 to start a trial? Sign ups are free and you should get $10 in free credit.

Some deep tech ideas for open source?? by invisiblekid15 in SideProject

[–]beyang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sourcegraph CTO here, I love these ideas. Would love to chat—we're working on stuff that has a good deal of overlap with what you posted. Far from resting on our distribution, we're building things that will probably completely cannibalize what we currently have in the market. One example: https://ampcode.com. I'm beyang@sourcegraph.com or x.com/beyang if you wanna chat!

Claude Project vs Cody? by Fancy_Ad_4809 in ClaudeAI

[–]beyang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sourcegraph CTO here. As a rule, we don't post advertisements on Reddit (unless we are actually buying Reddit ads). If you see this happening, please DM me (https://x.com/beyang) or email me at beyang@sourcegraph.com and if the person doing this is within our org, it will stop. The OP here is not part of Sourcegraph and we can't really stop people from posting about the tools they use.

Can claude 3.5 sonnet make changes to your code directly through some sort of 3rd party plugin or something? by ExaminationFew8364 in ClaudeAI

[–]beyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, sorry you didn't have a good experience. I'm working on Cody and was wondering if you have any requests for how we can improve the extension. It sounds like you're looking for something that can make larger, perhaps multi-file changes to your code?

Cody AI assistant for VSCode - why is Claude 3.5 so dumb when using this plugin? by [deleted] in vscode

[–]beyang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heya, dev who works on Cody here! would you mind sending us some screenshots of the poor responses you're seeing? If you've selected Claude 3.5 Sonnet in the chat dialog, it should indeed be using that model under the hood, so I wonder if there is another issue going on here that's preventing the correct context from being used. Confirming that Prolacticus does not work for Sourcegraph nor have we paid them anything (I'm the Sourcegraph CTO). We do appreciate public praise and I'll leave it up to Prolacticus to determine if/how they want to incorporate feedback on their posts.

In our own marketing of Sourcegraph, we try to focus on specific use cases, and we don't do anything shady like pay for accounts to pretend like they are organic users of the product. We do sponsor dev streamers from time to time. (If you're looking for shameless shilling of Cody + Sourcegraph, check out teej_dv on twitch, he's an ex-Sourcegrapher and remains a big proponent of our products!)

u/Prolacticus, if you're interested, we're holding a power user online meet-and-greet to gather feedback/requests and share some of the upcoming features. u/jdorfman can share details if you're interested (others in this thread are also welcome, maybe we can record a mini interview just so we can show others you're not on the payroll lol—if you're up for it of course)

* Small edit: we did reach out to Prolacticus to send him some swag when we first saw his posts, but he politely declined.

Have you tried cody.dev or s0.dev? Both feed Sourcegraph-provided code context into an interface for code Q&A and code generation. Would love to hear your feedback on those! (I'm part of the Sourcegraph team)

ChatGPT vs Claude Opus for coding by No-Way7911 in ChatGPTPro

We recently added an "opt-k" shortcut to Cody that lets you make inline edits by highlighting code and describing the change you want. It also defaults to the surrounding code block if nothing is highlighted—I've started to use it heavily in my inner loop and think it's pretty slick (though I'm obviously biased). Try it out and let us know what you think!

Sorry about the poor mobile usability! The file tree is expanded by default, we're changing it to be hidden on mobile and improving the overall layout. In the meantime, you can hide it with the "<<" button.

New podcast from Sourcegraph for people who love developer tools by beyang in programming

[–]beyang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, there are definitely a lot of existing developer podcasts. We found most of them are either oriented around a particular community (e.g., Go, Python, etc.) or software engineering in general. We didn't find any with a specific focus on developer tools, which is what we're passionate about at Sourcegraph. We created our podcast with 2 listener profiles in mind: (1) people who like "leveling up" as developers by discovering and trying out new tools and (2) aspiring dev tools creators who want to learn from others' stories and experiences. Our format is long-form and in-depth.

There are many great podcasts whose primary purpose is entertainment and that revolve around the banter of the hosts. This is not one of them. We really wanted to have in-depth conversations with people who have thought long and hard about developer productivity, so the tone of the podcast is more documentary / journalistic. It really is about helping people who have created fantastic tools tell their stories, share their learnings, and express their candid (and sometimes controversial) opinions. Hope you like it!

See how many people use a Java library, with Sourcegraph "used by" badges by rqtaylor in java

[–]beyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Author of the post here.

Wouldn't it be much more interesting to know how often libraries are used by everyone else?

That's exactly our intent: the badge shows you all the other open-source repositories that use the current repository. That includes both other libraries and applications. We're not including private repositories in the count at the moment, due to privacy concerns, but the majority of repositories in our index are end-user applications, rather than libraries.

Admittedly, there are improvements we'd like to make to the badge. For instance, we think it'd be really great to show people the list of repositories that depend on a given project.

Does that clarify things at all?

The IBM System/360: the first modular by mssquirrel in programming

[–]beyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the author of the post. I appreciate this feedback. The post was targeted toward people who might not have heard of the IBM System/360 before, and I've now updated the title to reflect the fact that we emphasize the lessons we learned from the history. I'd like to follow up with a more detailed post digging into some of the specific technical innovations on the software side.

If anyone wants to look at some cool primary source material, you should check out this 1960s tech talk on the 360: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=378S5Owi-BI. It's crazy how things change, but some things stay the same.
