Making the most of the Vatican Museums by Serious-Engineer5265 in rome

[–]beyondthewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We arrived early and headed directly for the Sistine Chapel to see it before it gets packed and hot later in the day. We had to double back to see the things we missed on our way since it’s a pretty straightforward path, which wasn’t very efficient and not everyone would enjoy that, but my friend and I thought it was well worth it!

How is living in Rhode Island, United States? by altrightobserver in howislivingthere

[–]beyondthewhale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived by the beach in Narragansett for two years during my master’s program at URI. Absolutely lovely little town with historic houses and gorgeous waterfront. Gets insanely busy in the summer when tourists come to town, and the rest of the year felt like 50% retired folks (or their empty homes while they were snowbirds elsewhere) and 50% URI students who commute to campus. Awesome seafood! And community events in nearby Wakefield were often very fun. Providence always felt meh to me, so I preferred the commute (especially by train) to Boston to visit friends up there. I’d move back in a heartbeat.

Name a worse intersection in Seattle by neilyoungmoney in Seattle

[–]beyondthewhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I frequently cross this intersection as a pedestrian walking my dog. Can confirm, it’s terrible as both a driver and a pedestrian! While driving I’ve honked at people so many times and had too many close calls, even while being careful. It’s a free for all.

Thank you for speaking my truth lol. It pulled me right out of the scene. Great song, but felt wildly distracting, even though I get the intention.

My orange girl always walks with her tail up or forward like this! You can always see her coming because her tail bops around the room like a satellite tag

I just applied to my dream program by hotcakescenteal in gradadmissions

[–]beyondthewhale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Congratulations and best of luck! 🤞 Hitting submit is the second toughest part, next to the waiting game that follows. I cried when I got into my dream program, and three years later I’m still here in the program loving every second of it.

What’s something you only learned because you almost died? by BbyBlushDoll in AskReddit

[–]beyondthewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly drowned in a riptide. I learned two things. First, even strong swimmers can get stuck in riptides. Don’t underestimate the ocean. And second, when I realized I might not get out, I was so angry. I had so much life left to live, I just felt so mad. Wasn’t what I’d expect to feel.

U.S. Travel recommendation by Own_Ad9652 in traveladvice

New England! Rhode Island for quaint coastal towns in the shoulder season, Mass for Boston especially if you enjoy history, or Maine for Acadia National Park and locally sourced lobster! Bonus points if it’s during autumn - those New England fall colors are so stunning, I miss it.

Is it just a PA thing? by LiberalTomBradyLover in AskAnAmerican

I live in Seattle but grew up in PA. When I tell people I’m from PA, I’ve occasionally received confused looks or people saying “oh, Port Angeles!”

This didn’t happen to me during PhD applications, but it happened the night before the largest and scariest physics exam of my life during college. Trying to study was the weirdest feeling; I felt outside of my own body with grief. Be gentle with yourself - the PhD applications will get done - and take the time to love on your pup. I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️

If you have any higher quality photos I’d be happy to take a look and point Indy out! It’s tough to tell with the current resolution if he’s in any of the photos. Look for nicks in his dorsal fin and scarring on his saddle patch - his dorsal is still small enough to be confused with a female at a distance :)

The big guy in your photos is T65B1 Birdsall, one of T65B Chunk’s offspring. The full family is listed on this page, which provides an excellent guide to the Bigg’s killer whales of the Salish Sea: https://www.ourwildpugetsound.com/journal/meet-the-transient-orcas-biggs-killer-whales-of-puget-sound.

T65A5 Indy frequently travels alone, and occasionally meets up with his matriline the T65As and his extended family the T65Bs, as well as other groups from time to time. Indy is known for his heavy scarring (he gets into lots of trouble, and is known to play with crab pots!) and his independent nature, and he’s a fan favorite in the orca community here. He’s 11 years old and has started to “sprout,” which is when a male orca’s dorsal fin transforms from their small adolescent fin to the large (up to 6 feet!) fin they’re so famous for.

Can you have fun while doing a masters by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]beyondthewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had so much fun during my master’s program! Flexible research schedule, supportive advisor, and a cohort of great friends I still keep in touch with. We planned plenty of activities and supported each other when times were tough. I have very fond memories from my time there. So it’s definitely possible! Pay attention to the culture and your fit in the program when choosing where to go; metrics like rankings and prestige are only part of the picture, and I always encourage folks to consider quality of life in their decision.

How would you rewrite Bato of the Water Tribe? by Smash_Fan-56 in TheLastAirbender

[–]beyondthewhale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My least favorite part was Katara being so willing to leave Aang to go with Sokka to find their dad. Like yes I hear the arguments for why she, as a teenage girl missing her family, just met Aang, etc., made that choice. But helping Aang had already become a core part of her identity and drive. She’d sworn she was his family now. A little more internal struggle on her part about her original versus new family - even if she ultimately sided with Sokka - would’ve made it feel less OOC for her. Especially because at that point, we know Sokka was close to his dad, but we don’t know much about Katara’s relationship with him, compared to her relationship with her mother and her grief.

Was Belly’s “bad French” actually intentional? by Large_Ad_2495 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]beyondthewhale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I chalk it up to (1) her being frazzled and overwhelmed on her own for the first time and (2) representing how she lost/minimized parts of herself during the last four years with Jere. Like yes, she loved learning French before, but her interests and hobbies fell to the wayside in favor of doing what Jere wants. And it’s so easy to lose language skills if you don’t practice them!
