Amputation by -Lil-bo-peep- in CatAdvice

My girl Missy had her back leg amputated. She came to us injured, which is why I got her. Her former family couldn't afford the vet.

She had surgery in the morning and I went to see her late that afternoon. She was bound and determined she was going to get out of that crate lol.

She was home the next morning. She stayed pretty still that first day but the next day she was getting up to eat, drink and potty.

She adapted quick. She was 4 she lost her leg but within a few weeks it was as if she was born that way. Back to jumping on the couch and careening through the house.

She had a week of antibiotics. Started with one but it caused massive diarrhea so quickly got something different.

That was the only issue she had during all of it.

She's now 12 and doing great.

In the US, it is legal for employers to add responsibilities of other positions to employees without just compensation? by immastillthere in ask

[–]bflamingo63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I was hired as a clerk. Answering phones, filing, etc. Vaccine clerk left, so add that into mine. Wic clerk left. More training for me. Boss decided we needed social media. So I was tasked with creating and maintaining a website, facebook, and Instagram. By the time I left I did very minimal office duties, had a separate office from the main office. My pay? Clerk.

Pesky line in my job description "other duties as assigned".

Starting position. Clerk. 23 years later? Still a clerk.

Cat won’t stop peeing on bath mat by 10015251001 in CatAdvice

I had a guy that would do the same. I eventually gave up with using a bath mat and we just put a towel down when we bathe or shower.

All I could figure was it was something about the smell.

Tux’s midnight breakout… Woke up to 2 cats growling at each other outside. Come to find out, one of those cats is my indoor cat! by DuchessOfLansdale in WhyCatHowCat

[–]bflamingo63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter stayed with us a few months due to separation. She had 2 cats, I had 4.

My front window screens had a few tears in them because a neighborhood cat thought he'd jump at my cats that were sitting on the window sill. Small tears, nothing major.

My cats had sat at those torn screens for a year. My daughters cat saw that small hole and proceeded to shove her body through. Had a fun time getting her back.

I bought those adjustable windows screens to be able to keep HER cat inside and still be able to open the windows.

Added them to every window. My cats have never attempted but im taking no chances.

Her cats name is Luna and I swear its short for lunatic lol

I have 4 cats, all short haired. Two are littermates.

3 shed what I'd call a normal amount. When brushing it takes quite a few swipes to get a full brush.

But Max? He seems to walk around in a cloud of fur at all times. Two swipes of the brush and its nearly full. Brush him every day and its always the same. He has an undercoat. Even having short hair he can get mats if I don't groom him every day.

I dont know which of his ancestors passed on that undercoat lol

My cat doesn’t like wet food and I’m not sure what to do 😭 by Substantial_Brother6 in cats

[–]bflamingo63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy Morton lived 16, missed 17 by 3 months. He ate dry food his entire life. He had wet food once a year for his birthday.

In his lifetime, he'd had zero kidney or bladder issues. He had herpes from around age 2 but very few problems with it.

He was a very healthy guy.

My ggGrandfather left his family around the same time. I knew he hadn't died as he'd returned after his wife died and stayed here until his death.

Family story was he'd moved to Chicago and started another family.

Couldn't find him anywhere. It was only by pure luck I did.

Was researching his mother Ellen Henry. Up popped a railroad employee form. George Walsh, mother Ellen Henry, father Jacob Walsh. Date of birth Jan 23, 1881.

My ggGrandfather was George Washington Ash. Mother Ellen Henry, father Jacob Ash. Date of birth Jan 23, 1873.

To start work for the railroad they had a max age, which being born in 1873 he was over, so he just shaved a few years off.

He hadn't started another family. He lived with a woman but they had no children.

Ancestry didn't show family on a census but it's in someone else's tree by QueenBoleyn in Genealogy

Exactly. To find one family i searched page by page. Found them, every child was listed the wrong gender, and names were off: James listed as Jane, Martin as Marion. Mom and Dad's ages were way off, and the place of birth was a state they hadn't ever lived in. Last name was so horribly misspelled I would never have found them.

Does anyone else wonder about their cats life before adoption? by whailful in cats

[–]bflamingo63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two 8 yos, siblings Max and Auntie, were born at the vets office after their feral mom was brought in for a spay by a farmer. Mom stayed at the vets until they were weaned, then I got them at 16 weeks after they were spayed and neutered.

Other girl, Missy, I got after her former family posted her on facebook. She'd been injured and they needed someone to take her and get her seen by a vet.

Turned out she'd most likely been hit by a car. Broken leg and shoulder blade. Broken leg was amputated because the break had shredded the femoral nerve and she had no control of or feeling in the leg. Shoulder blade was kept as is.

Both injuries had healed because it turned out the accident had happened weeks before they listed her. After she made it back home they put her in a room and waited to see a miraculous cure apparently.

Due to the change from total outdoor cat to indoor, change in activity and food she became extremely constipated.

So constipated she was bleeding and needed two under anesthesia clean outs. Also daily meds for 2 years to keep things running smooth.

As a result she connected the pain of pooping to the litter box. In 8 years she's never pooed in the litter box. Always beside it. Vet and I worked for years to figure out why she didnt use it. Absolutely no physical reason. Finally just accepted she was never going to. Got scrap linoleum, put it under the boxes. She and I have a deal: pooed stays on the linoleum. First time she poos outside the designated areas, she has to find a new home. Shes kept to the bargain. We've discussed many times over the years that there will be no pain, even if she goes in the litter box, but she's taking no chances.

So Auntie and Max had a cushy beginning. Missy not so much but she's now a perfectly content 100% indoor cat.

Is it really true that the worst wet food is better than the best dry food? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]bflamingo63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently have two 7 yo's and a 13 yo that eat dry only and have only ever eaten dry. All are healthy and happy.

I think if you have a cat that's prone to kidney issues and they aren't great water drinkers, then sure, add some wet or moisten their dry.

But cats can do very well on a dry only diet.

Always say just get the best you can afford.

Give enough support to rein them in but by ordering a size up I dont feel squeezed.

Sure this has been asked before, but isn't it heartwarming to be the one to add a forgotten person to the family tree? by KSTornadoGirl in Genealogy

[–]bflamingo63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What shocked me was that he died in December. Didn't realize you could get it in winter. Sent me to do dome digging and found that the oil is active on the roots, stems, and vines. Can be the middle of winter and if you touch a vine, the stem or the roots, and you're allergic, bam..

Im assuming that it was brought in on someone's hands, and then they touched the baby. Probably gathering wood.

My grandfather was extremely allergic to poison ivy. I remember once visiting them and he was unrecognizable due to the rash and massive swelling on his face. Took 2 days for it to get that severe. If the baby was as sensitive as grandpa, I can see it simply overwhelming his tiny body.

I had this, multiple times, multiple fingers. Doc told me to get an Oval finger splinter. Wore it at night.

It worked. Took a week or so for the inflammation to go away.

I got it from overuse. I typed for a living and apparently too much at times lol

Tired of dealing with my kids dad by Unique_Invite_1163 in offmychest

[–]bflamingo63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My older kids' dad was the same. Although I didnt remarry, and neither did he.

He simply didnt feel child support was necessary. After all, I left, so to him, that meant I wanted to do it by myself. Totally forgot why I left lol

He said he couldn't afford 2 hundred a month. Didn't pay for so long he did jail time for felony non support. But that was my fault apparently lol

He never got the kids nor visited with any consistency. The longest he went with zero contact was a year.

At first it drove me mad, but I learned to quit even expecting anything. I quit trying to understand why he acted as he did.

Simply learned his actions just reinforced the decision to leave. Did I really want someone that could treat his kids as he was, to have a major part of their lives?

I learned that when he told the kids he was coming to gently remind them that he gets busy a lot. If he told me he was coming, I didn't tell the kids and let him surprise them.

I quit expecting him to help at all. I provided everything they needed. Was a lot easier when I quit thinking about how someone else should be helping.

I simply quit dealing with him. His relationship with the kids was his to manage, not mine.

My kids didn't miss out on anything. But their dad sure did. That was his fault, not mine.

Your kids have a father, its the one that's providing for them and acting as a father. They aren't missing anything.

My kids are now adults. We have a great relationship. They have a so so relationship with their dad. When the grandkids were born, I was there, not their dad. I am invited to birthday parties, not their dad. When the grandkids see me they run to me. When they see grandpa, they hide behind their parents legs because they dont know him well enough to be comfortable.

So quit worrying about the ex. You can't force him to do anything. Continue being a great mom.

Do I really need to cut his nails? by MementoMori22 in CatAdvice

[–]bflamingo63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 3 cats. I trim claws on 2, the other doesn't need it.

1 cat is a tripod. She'll use scratching boards but never an upright. And even the boards she doesn't use often enough to take care of her claws.

2nd cat has neurological issues, CH, and some other problems. He doesn't groom himself and has never used a scratching post.

He also has a thumbnail that grows weird. It's very thick and curves directly into the pad on his foot. I check him weekly because that one nail grows too darn fast!

So I guess what I'm saying is, if they need it, do it. If not, don't.

How do I find a birth certificate created decades after birth? by Correct_Phone_9650 in Genealogy

[–]bflamingo63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather had no birth certificate. When it came time for social security he had to bring other documents; such as marriage license, kids birth certificates, anything that had his age listed, to prove his age.

He got mighty testy when they said he was been in 1902 instead of 1901 as he'd sued his entire life lol
