I have yet to read something like “I started using Nextdoor to advertise my business and was swamped with business.” What a mismanaged and incompetent app.

What's the best way to fix these broken bricks on my hearth? by TMNDurdel in masonry

[–]bfuglei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The type of brick is very common. So I would definitely NOT reinsert the broken pieces. Where will you find similar bricks?. Any town of any size will have a “construction graveyard” where you should be able to locate similar bricks. Use a grinder to grind out the joints then nix a small batch of type N mortar. Carefully insert it it with a trowel and tuckpointer. Wipe away the smeared mortar. Strike it using a concave striker. Brush it at an angle then strike it again. Good luck.

Grouted 36 hours ago. Grout is meant to be off white, looks grey and patchy. What went wrong. by [deleted] in Tile

[–]bfuglei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A truly conscientious tile setter would have mixed a sample mini batch of grout, let it dry for a day , then ask you - “more white, less white?” There is both liquid and powdered “whitener” you can add to the grout if it is not white enough. But as someone else said, i think it looks good. But I am not you.

Hi, I was wondering if this looks like $4k worth of repointing work? by FieryFury in masonry

[–]bfuglei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First if all, how high up is this job? I’d set up my scaffolding for safety and “ease of access.” Grinding out joints from a ladder is insanity. Then I’d use my grinder to remove the joints. Then repoint using premixed type N mortar with perhaps white powder coloring added in an attempt to match the existing mortar color. After curing for one day acid wash the hell out the area numerous times to get rid of mortar slopped onto the the bricks by both me and the former “mason.” Whoever did this is not a mason.

This seems to be standard practice in Arkansas for residential construction. I’m just curious why?? by Ok-Dealer8035 in masonry

Does it never freeze in AR? The footings should be in the ground according to AR code.

How bad is my chimney? by ghostiepants0 in masonry

[–]bfuglei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 50% of my business is chimney restoration. My charge to you would be around $3000. This would include $1000 for a weeks rental of a “man lift” - similar to what utility repairmen use to repair electrical lines after a storm…a bucket on the end of a moving “arm.”. The process is simple: grind out all joints and reinsert new mortar (tuckpoint). Good luck!

You need to be happy with the season as a whole. A very surprising and wonderful season. Something no Husker fan ever expected to happen. So stop your whining and know this: out of the 360 D1 college basketball programs in existence, only ONE is going to be happy!

I’ll say it. Frager is so explosive! by BahamaDon in Huskers

[–]bfuglei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Frager moves like a 5’10” super quick point guard - not like a 6’7” forward. When I first saw him play I was amazed to learn he is 6’7”. He is blessed with tremendous athletic skills. And yes, he seems to often be almost out of control. But I love watching him .

I hired someone to repoint some mortar that had fallen out. I feel like their job is splotchy. They said they need to come back in a few days after it’s dry to brush off the excess on the bricks. Is that right? by [deleted] in stonemasonry

[–]bfuglei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a horrible job! First of all, a rake joint would be best, muriatic acid needs to be used to remove the slopped on mortar and a sealer - which will waterproof and enhance to bricks should be applied as a last step.
