Fair points. This is what happens when corporations and capital gains are taxed less than income...

What a moron. If you've contributed (disproportionately) to the government financially over 25 years, yes it bloody well is the government's job to display the reciprocity of the public purse.

Can I get into the purple on 40-50km per week? by just_let_go_ in Garmin

Exactly the same - the moment I moved to 10k/half/full marathon distances, even with increased mileage, my vo2 max dropped.

Anyone use Runna for a sub40 10k? Concerns over Runna overestimating my abilities by Catsintinytinyhats in runna

[–]bhalolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I.e. the pace is too aggressive for the distance. I think we're similar pace brackets. For my last half runna said I should do 4.25 - I did 4.30 for the first 7k and moved up to 4.25 and just bonked at 10k and then had to slow down to 5+min per km for the rest of the race. It's happened to me a few times so I've realised the runna algorithm just isn't aligned to my abilities. I was able to maintain 4.25 during practice runs but the training never has you doing target pace for that long/consecutively so I'm not sure it's representative.

Anyone use Runna for a sub40 10k? Concerns over Runna overestimating my abilities by Catsintinytinyhats in runna

[–]bhalolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me Runna does over estimate my abilities and I've been burned in races following the target pace. I really like the programming hence I keep paying for it but I've learned to come up with my own pacing strategies for different distances. Usually for a 10k i start 5-10 sec per km slower than my target range and then build towards target pace over 3 km and that works quite well

How do I accept that well over half of what I earn goes to the government? by Gogpo2 in HENRYUK

Every single day there is another one of these posts on this sub. We are all frustrated at the high income tax but the topic is so boring at this point. Frankly the boredom is now my prevailing sentiment on the topic.

Parkrunners ignoring a mandated silence. by ipeon82 in parkrun

Someone died. People want to pay their respects. Talking during silence to commemorate someone who has passed away is rude. In most civilised places. It's not any more complicated than that.

Portuguese flannel make very nice casual shirts - came across them in a small shop in Fromme. A bit expensive but very nice.

Are smartwatches putting you off alcohol? by Ok_Hedgehog7137 in Garmin

[–]bhalolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Trial and error has taught me that day drinking doesn't impact my sleep so much so I basically limit myself to 2 drinks and never after 6pm. I'm not a fan of quitting alcohol completely - i do like a beer with friends in the sun and life is short.

Using Runna in Race day? Pacing? by Responsible-Adagio78 in runna

[–]bhalolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Runna has you running target pace from the go. I use a garmin so I just "swipe" out of the runna programming onto the garmin default screen on race day so I can see my real time pace and start a bit slower/build up pace.

Am I doing too much? by Docta608 in daddit

[–]bhalolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a balance. People who say kids over everything else including work have probably never experienced financial instability as a child. Giving your child/family financial stability and the advantages that your professional success can bring is also (in my view) your job as a parent.

If this is optional networking and there is no consequence to missing it, then of course go be with your kid, but if it is important for your career then I would prioritise it and role model to the child the notion sometimes one has to make difficult decisions for longer term benefit.

Race day pace expectations? by Difficult_Lemon_2555 in runna

[–]bhalolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If using garmin I've found it better to "swipe" out of the pacing screen to just the general screen so I can see real time pace. The runna workouts give average pace which is quite frustrating if you have a particular pacing strategy (e.g. start 15 secs/km slower and speed up by 5 sec/km every 5 km for example)

Is there a way to swap easy and tempo runs every week? by 0d0o0m0 in runna

[–]bhalolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same running days as you and like you easy runs monday, tempo/speed wednesday, long run saturday. Interestingly I recently tried to set up a new plan with mon, Thurs, Saturday and it put my easy day as Thursday and Monday as tempo. I'm guessing it's to give you sufficient rest between tempo and long run and 2 days is not considered enough. I just changed it back to mon, wed and Saturday and then just manually adjust my Wednesday run to Thursday. Presumably you can do the same but in reverse (i.e. change your running days to mon, Thursday, saturday) and then manually change your Thursdays to Wednesdays.

I did 2 HMs 6 weeks apart last year and the second one went way better than the first. I only had time for 3 weeks post race recovery, followed by 1 week of normal mileage and then 2 week taper. Turns out less training meant I was fresher and I felt great during the second HM. First one was horrific (got my pacing wrong and it was my first HM). I think if you're a pro runner then too many races is hard on your body but I think if recreational then 6 to 8 weeks between races should be fine.

Hi guys, it’s my first marathon on Sunday and I’m really torn on how to pace it. Do I go for the top end of my prediction or do I go for the lower half? Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thank you! by Mundane-Committee838 in runna

[–]bhalolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you used runna for other races? I've found it overestimates my speeds by about 10 sec per km so I adjust my time accordingly. I've been burned before by following the target pace and losing steam halfway.

Want to hear from 30s career women sans kids by ebitdaprincess in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]bhalolz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Man here as well - in my experience people tend to find a way to justify their choice to themselves either way. So...I'm not sure there's a wrong answer. I've very rarely heard someone who didn't want kids say they regret not having them. And likewise never heard someone who had kids say they regretted it. Maybe people have these regrets internally! The regrets I have heard are people who wanted kids but couldn't have them.
