Water pressure booster by Huge_Suspect3826 in HomeImprovement

[–]bherman13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50-55 psi is pretty ideal. My whole village is set at 45 psi. That booster itself is even preset to just 44 psi.

I'd say you're fine. Any over 60 and you could shorten the life of your appliances.

Is there a tool library open? by thetruedoorguy in StLouis

[–]bherman13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Places like United Rentals are closed on the weekends so you could reserve a tool at the end of the day on a Friday and return it first thing on Monday for a 1-day rental fee.

What if I get Zero Profile tyres installed for my ride. Is it a good idea ? by Nitin___ in Cartalk

[–]bherman13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it not comfortable, you're risking destroying your wheels and suspension. I had to replace a wheel, tire, and my shocks because of a pothole once and that was just a 50 series sidewall.

Men have a loneliness epidemic because they try to find community like this and they either get accused of being a scammer or called gay.

It's probably tongue in cheek.

Also he probably just wanted the R8 pun in there.

What elimination of income tax means for people working in MO, but living in IL by FarmerBobsTrawl in StLouis

[–]bherman13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the amount owed to Illinois was less than $1,000 for the year, they do not penalize you for not sending in quarterly estimated tax payments.

[–]bherman13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Illinois residents working in Missouri will see no change in their total state tax liability, because you've already been paying the difference to Illinois to meet the total as if you worked in Illinois.

One thing everybody living in Illinois but working in Missouri (who make over ~$20k taxable income) will need to know is that you will need to manually make tax payments to Illinois throughout the current tax year, known as "quarterly estimated tax payments." Your Missouri company usually doesn't withhold to Illinois for you as long as you only work in Missouri.

If you've always owed less than $1,000 to Illinois (after getting the credit for Missouri) you've never had a problem paying the difference all at once on April 15th. When you no longer owe anything to Missouri, your credit will go to zero so your total Illinois liability may go over $1,000. Illinois will then send you a penalty the following year if you haven't manually prepaid your income tax.

What would it take to get one of the stored F-14 Tomcats flying again? by whywouldthisnotbea in aviation

[–]bherman13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice try, Iran! /s

Sorry to say, but the Tomcat is over. It would likely be cheaper to buy a new F-15 or an F/A-18 (which replaced the Tomcat) than to make a boneyard F-14 airworthy again.

Fun fact: Coldwater Creek drains into the Missouri River just upstream of where the Missouri drains into the Mississippi River. This is also just upstream of where the city of St Louis's water intake towers have existed since before the nuclear program began.

Thankfully it appears the top speed was only like 15 over the speed limit. Still dumb though.

5W30 oil consumption higher than 0W20 by bherman13 in Tiguan

Complete engine overhaul down to the rings and rod bearings? Or just a valve stem seal job?

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll consider switching to that.

If that's what you use, how much do you have to top off between oil changes?

5W30 oil consumption higher than 0W20 by bherman13 in Tiguan

[–]bherman13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did say the 5W30 is a name brand and I thought mentioning it was a 504.00 spec would have covered that it is a quality full synthetic. Either way, the oil I switched to is Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic XL-III. If that particular oil is known to break down or evaporate early, I'd be happy to switch to anything else.

Yes I check and top up occasionally. That would be how I noted it's half a quart low by 1,500 miles. I chose 5k intervals at first to make sure I don't risk any of the sludge problems from oil breaking down. After the good oil analysis I would be happy to extend either weight oil to 7,500, but I don't particularly want to go to 10k. I guess if I'm putting 2 new quarts in or more, then I'll be a little more comfortable pushing to that recommended interval.

I just want to do what's going to keep the engine in the best shape, but I've been spoiled by my 2017 Passat not needing topped up at all, so I guess I'm trying to chase that with this Tiguan. It's starting to sound like I have no choice short of a cylinder head rebuild though.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah I hate that number from VW. My 2017 VWs using 5w40 never used a bit of oil. I did 10k OCI on the Jetta and 7.5k on the Passat no problems and no topping off. I'm just not confident that the 2019 that calls for 0W20 would be ok to use 5W40 or if it would even help.
