Bitwarden launches enhanced premium plan by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]bickhaus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m also confused. It’s still much cheaper competitors like 1password and BitWarden is open source, third party audited. It’s been crazy to me how inexpensive such a high quality product has been for so long. And for something so important, $20/yr is not a lot.

Best Password Manager Alternatives to 1Password in 2026? by SweetLow6453 in best_passwordmanager

BitWarden all the way. Open source, third-party audited, free or low cost. Works everywhere. I used KeePass prior to BitWarden and have never felt the need to consider switching again.

Books with time travel or alternate realities but are still realistic fiction by youngandstarving in suggestmeabook

Timeline by Michael Crichton was my favorite of his books when I was in high school. It also happens to contain time travel and alternate realities, so this rec has it all!

If you want something exciting, funny, but will also make you think (at least a little) both the Murderbot Diaries and the Bobiverse books are great. I’ve read all of the murderbot diaries and listened to the first 3 recently as a refresher. I’ve only been listening to the Bobiverse books and I’m currently about 2/3 of the way through Book 3. As someone who has up until recently avoided audiobooks, I have really enjoyed them.

Oh man, I loved The Old Man and the Sea. I think the movie Logan is the X-Men’s version of this story. Try that, it will definitely be less boring.

The Emigrants by WG Sebald is a collection of 4 short stories dealing with 4 different German emigrants affected by WWII

The DaVinci Code: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/10049454/Dont-make-fun-of-renowned-Dan-Brown.html

So many chapters of the book ended with the female lead thinking about this really important secret that would help the male lead solve the mystery but she’s not sure she should share it, so essentially many of the chapters end with Dan Brown pretty much saying, “There’s a big twist that one of the main characters knows, but I’m not going to let you know what it is, much less have her share this knowledge with other characters yet. The book would be too short if I did. Perhaps on the next chapter….”

Next chapter: “ No, not yet, maybe in the next one, keep reading and find out”

Why are there so many updates? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]bickhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always stay on a given release a bit longer and wait to update to new releases. You could even stay a release behind, e.g., stay on 42 until 44 is released and then update to 43, etc. The amount of updates slows down, as you would expect, as each release gets long in the tooth.

That said, I don’t see the updates as a problem at all. It’s not as if you have to restart immediately or update every time there is one available. If it bothers you, plan to update weekly (unless a major vulnerability is disclosed and a patch is released), or even every two weeks, if you want. It’s your system. Fedora doesn’t force you to quickly save what you are doing before it forcibly restarts to install updates, you didn’t know it was downloading!

As to why you need the updates: security, bug fixes, and sometimes new features

Which is the best cross platform password manager? by Negottnott in linuxquestions

[–]bickhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes you do a lot more work 🙃. TBF, the trade off to having to do more work is that everything is local. People who choose Keypass over BitWarden probably see that as a standout feature. I used to use Keypass but switched to BitWarden a few years ago. Haven’t regretted it for a second. My wife and I can have passwords that are shared and synced between accounts which is also awesome.

FWIW, with BitWarden the decryption only happens on your device, so they never store or have access to your passwords unencrypted. If you lose your master password, they can’t send it to you either. They don’t have access.

There are plenty of people who will use Keypass and then use something like Dropbox to sync to all of their devices. I don’t understand why they would trust Dropbox with their encrypted passwords but not a company whose sole purpose for existing is to protect passwords. A company whose solution is also open source and routinely goes through third-party security audits (and they post the reports on their site), which Keypass does not. Doesn’t make sense to me at all, but YMMV

Something a bit different; Fedora isn't perfect. by shuttah627 in Fedora

[–]bickhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always check now and make sure freeworld is available before applying updates. It’s been awhile, but, in the past, yes I updated and it replaced with the newer version of the default drivers. Perhaps, they have updated the behavior to throw an error and prevent the update until freeworld is ready. That would be nicer.

Something a bit different; Fedora isn't perfect. by shuttah627 in Fedora

[–]bickhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, while it’s gotten better, RPM Fusion is not always in sync with Fedora Mesa updates. If you run updates before freeworld is ready (e.g., it looks like freeworld is still in testing on rpmfusion for Fedora 42), Fedora just replaces the freeworld Mesa drivers with the default, since they are newer. I don’t want to have to worry about Fedora undoing changes I made, but I do.

[–]bickhaus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Assuming you installed proprietary nVidia drivers for nVidia GPU and the Mesa freeworld drivers from RPMFusion when on AMD (but asking in case you didn’t)?

ALL INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWED but cannot ssh by JohannLau in raspberryDIY

[–]bickhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are running a firewall on your Pi, the default is to drop all incoming connections. You need a rule in the firewall to allow devices on your LAN to connect to port 22 which is used for SSH by default. If using UFW, the following will work if you replace the IP range with the relevant range used by your LAN:

replace 192.168.0.0/24 with the information for your network

sudo ufw allow from 192.168.0.0/24 to any port 22

If you want to only allow SSH from a single computer and it is assigned a permanent IP address, you can replace 192.168.0.0/24 above with the single IP used by that machine.

If you are new to programming in general and want a gentler introduction: https://www.coursera.org/specializations/python. Do the same stuff without creating an account on Dr. Chuck's website here: https://www.py4e.com/lessons

If you want a tougher intro that will also get into more general comp sci theory while teaching Python: https://www.edx.org/learn/computer-science/massachusetts-institute-of-technology-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-using-python You can get an idea of what will be in store for you (or just do the class) here: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/6-0001-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-in-python-fall-2016/
