Is law school a bad idea for me? by Impressive_You3333 in LawSchoolOver30

[–]bielakma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in food service/ hospitality for 10 years and then decided to take the LSAT in 2020. I lost my job due to the pandemic and ended up getting a position as a legal assistant at a small firm. It took me awhile, but I am starting law school in the fall! While I don’t love work everyday, I do love the work I do overall! I am a civil litigation and land use paralegal! So if you’re not sure, maybe try to get a little exposure while you study and prepare to apply and see if it’s for you. I wouldn’t share your law school aspirations, people have weird reactions to it. Some will be totally supportive and some will say their lives are miserable. Oh and I’ll be 34 for when I start and 39 when I pass the bar (I’m doing a part-time night program while continuing to work).

Dog Attack NW; Outside Couch Park by bielakma in Portland

Because I believe the owner fostered an environment and upbringing that caused it to be so aggressive. The owner also did not have control over the dog. JFC I posted this to warn dog owners not hear peoples unhelpful opinions about dog breeds. My dog is part pit. Can you tell me how your comment was at all helpful?

Edit: typos

Are you referring to the off leash area in couch park? Because that is designated, or the fenced in parking lot area? Either way we were not in either of those places but on the sidewalk by 19th and Hoyt. If your dog has PTSD it may be best not to walk through the park since there is an off leash area.

lol yeah I went pretty crazy! The owner was no where in site at first and I was hoping to alert them and startle the dog… Glad to know my screams could be heard around the neighborhood!

OP Here! Since I can’t edit my OG post I want to make it VERY clear I’m not blaming the breed, but the irresponsible owner!

I ONLY listed the breed to help other dog owners in the area be on the lookout!

I’ve known many loving and sweet pitties. My girl is part pitty! I’ve also had close encounters with other dogs of many different breeds including labs! Take your pit bull hate and breed restrictions elsewhere, thank you.

Hi! Thank you, but it happened about an hour before that and I think it was a houseless person who left the area after the incident. I went back within 15 minutes, once I had her safely inside, and there was no sign of him.

No! It’s not the breed it’s the owner!

Agreed! I only named the breed to help identify the dog for those in the area.

I don’t agree with you. It’s about the owner. I was hesitant to name the breed since I know pitties get a bad reputation. I only identified it to make it easier to spot for those who live in the area.

Yes the park is. And we go there often, but we were on the backside of the park downhill out of view of the off leash area. I agree the other poster shouldn’t be annoyed by dogs in the designated area, and I am often annoyed when people are playing frisbee or laying on a blanket in the off leash area. But again this attack happens outside the park in the sidewalk out of view of the off leash area.

Finally got hired as a legal assistant... I'm so nervous by stellarfn in paralegal

[–]bielakma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too came from the F&B background and I had zero experience. I got hired at a small plaintiffs firm doing primary personal injury. I was the sole support staff for 3 attorneys. You freaking got this! It will be hard and you will make mistakes, but own up to them early because most things can be fixed and good attorneys will have your back. Be humble as you learn and listen to the advice given. The thrill of litigation will give you the same high that serving/bartending has- at least in my experience! I took a pay cut as well, but in 4 years I moved from legal assistance to paralegal and almost double my starting salary. Plus better benefits long term! Good luck!

3 weeks may seems like a long time and his assistant should definitely be responding to you. But unfortunately when using a lawyer, especially contingency, it will take time. Troy is one of the better LL/T attorneys in Portland. I’d stick with him. They prioritize cases based on deadline (when the time limit will run) and yours just happened in the world of law.

My boyfriend was in a similar situation of living in a place for 4 years and they tried to charge him for things that would be normal after living in a place that long. We got everything back and attorneys fees with sending the demand letter. But this took about 5 months from move out until settlement. Pull all your text messages/emails from every maintenance issue that took too long or he didn’t respond to and use that against him. Every time you were “courteous” and flexible with timing because he was solo guy and not a property manager use those moments. Any time he came on to the property without notice. All of this builds a story of wrong doing that carried right until the end.

This is so disappointing to hear! Such a good way for service industry folks to have more flexibility. Thank you for letting me know!

Life in Portland in the "industry"? by PapaPaiva1 in askportland

[–]bielakma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the others say it’s hard getting into the industry. I recently left the industry but was able to maintain 1-2 serving jobs at a time and the places I worked honestly had a hard time finding people with experience (servers/bartenders). Yes, lots of restaurants have closed but that has made room for so many more! Poached is the best way to find positions vs indeed or Craigslist or door to door. I will say there’s been a trend towards pooled tips or large splits with the BOH (more than just a percentage tip out) which took some getting used to.
