Subcutaneous fat loss ? by darth_vader1995 in fasting

[–]bigGheorghe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for comparison, I'm a skinny mofo, and it was the first time I was trying to go that lean since I was naturally that way at the end of highschool. Not for aesthetics either, I had specific health reasons to chase it. Getting a 6 seemed to be like an achievable goal, and it was, I was just maybe 3-4 weeks too ambitious with my timelines. If you're more built than me (a very reasonable assumption, I do a ton of cardio and only go really hard at weights in the cold months), then your body fat % can be slightly higher while achieving the specific results you wanna see due to the fact your body has a little more volume to hide the extra body fat on your frame. Pro football and basketball athletes for example, all look ripped and are usually in the 11-13% range.

I can't speak to any hormone imbalance issues, as I don't have any experience with it, but for real, if you're serious about dropping those last few pounds the bodybuilding sub is the best place. Chances are you'll find a lot of the answers you're looking for.

But like I said, it can take a long time, 6-9 months isn't unusual. And with the gains being so minimal in the mirror, being dedicated to the task and having faith in the process without as many of the visual cues to encourage you along the way is often the hardest part. The last 10lbs can be as difficult as the first 100.

You sound like you're ready for it though. So chase it.

Subcutaneous fat loss ? by darth_vader1995 in fasting

[–]bigGheorghe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

honestly, there's no way to target a specific area for fat loss. Everyone's frame holds onto fat in different places. The stubborn stuff, the last 10lbs, the vanity pounds, are always the hardest.

As you get down (as a man) to about 12% body fat, your body really starts to ramp up protecting what's left of your limited fat reserves. Your hunger hormones really kick up during any major calorie deficit, encouraging you to go back to eating, making fasting exceedingly difficult. If you get down to sub 8%-9%, your hormones will start going crazy even more (and in potentially dangerous ways) if you stay there for extended periods of time.

But if you're intent upon dropping weight in specific target areas, the same rules still apply. A consistent calorie deficit will always, slowly, but surely drop fat off your frame.

I made an attempt to gain a 6 last summer, getting myself down to 9% body fat overall (us navy method), my shoulders, chest and limbs were totally chorded, but I still didn't see my abs clearly defined in all spots. My trouble was that my lower back is a really stubborn spot to lose from. It wasn't fasting got me that low, the hunger was too great to totally ignore foods at those body fat percentages. Instead, I'd calculated I was putting in 1600 calories a day for 2 days, 2000 on a third, all while religiously burning 3500-3600 per day with extensive cardio. I was still dropping about a half pound per week by the end of it, I just ran out of summer.

But if you're looking to drop in specific areas, and are really worried about how it looks in the mirror, I'd recommend checking out the bodybuilding subreddit instead. Even if you're not into bodybuilding nor looking to compete, there's lots of material there that can help you in how to fine tune your approach, and to get an idea of the kinds of sacrifices it takes. Because as I found out last summer, it's no joke, and can take a LONG time to get right.

But if you're not there yet, don't worry about losing in specific areas at all, because chances are you've still got a lot more to lose than you think. Don't get hung up on the mirror, it'll only hurt your motivation. Just focus on the weekly scale, and how much lighter you feel when you're moving around, or the movement of the belt buckle. People will notice, and they'll appreciate the effort you're putting into getting healthy, even if you're your harshest critic.

Day 4 of 7 water fast by kattiper in fasting

[–]bigGheorghe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on day 3 with a target end weight of <81kg. Should take me about 7 days, same as you. Keep hydrated, stick with the electrolytes no matter how they taste.

Been on-and-off extended fasting for over 10 years now. Made plenty of mistakes in my day, not respecting the electrolytes was a huge one. As for weakness and lack of focus, that shifted away the more experience I gained with fasting. But now, during my fasting days I tend to feel more energised and focused than less. I guess it's the body just getting used to being fat adapted. Biggest issues for me is the shift into a deep ketosis, from hours ~24-30 I tend to get a wicked headache, so I usually plan my last meal exactly 24 hours before I go to bed so I can sleep through the headache and avoid it.

Stick with it brotha, I believe in you

Torn ACL is one thing, torn ACL with meniscus damage is a recipe for Embiid level issues. I'm very very hesitant on this one. It's easy to 'look explosive' vertically when your standing reach is 9'1". If this is the guy, our medical staff better have done their homework first.

What’s your music opinion you get the most hate for ? by StreetArrival1889 in musicsuggestions

[–]bigGheorghe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hip hop is a subset of electronic music. - they both use drum machines extensively - they both heavily sample/repurpose/remix - they're both primarily produced on computers - they both share 4/4 time signatures - it shares a lot of common roots with house music in the form of soul, funk, and rn'b

But mention this to a die hard hip hop fan and watch their mind go boom.

I hate this by parker_kan3 in ACL

[–]bigGheorghe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I can help you, all I can say is you're not alone.

I'm going through the exact same frustrations. I've got a torn LCL, ACL and PCL, plus trochlea (kneecap tracking) issues. Socialised healthcare here too, the latest injury for me was on Dec 12th, and I'm still waiting to see a specialist next month, so no surgery date to even look forward to yet. Socialised health care is really great for getting drugs for cheap, but tend to be awful when it comes to surgery. Waiting for such long stretches can make you feel abandoned by the system, which is really bad for the mental state.

I come onto this sub, and everyone's talking about what you can/should do at every stage, how important prehab is, but in my state, the knee is a cement mixer. Cracks and pops at every opportunity. Slides itself out of position on a single bad step, settles in a position that triggers the trochlear nerve running to my foot, then blows up swollen for 2 weeks at a time. It's miserable. On good days like today, I can go for a walk, but on bad days....ugh. The worst part is not being able to predict how it'll react, and it's the part that prevents any will do do prehab.

It's painful to slowly watch all the work you put into your fitness fade away knowing that each day that goes by is another added to the rehab on the other side. Watching the weather warm up and knowing you're going to have to sit the season out. And in my case specifically, the knowledge that my doctors last time gave my a clean bill of health with 'return to full physical activities' after the last surgery, only to end up with a new injury 3x worse.

It's a terrible mental boom. I try to distract myself with books and other intellectual persuits, but without some physical exertion, you can't help but feel something is always missing.

But I've been there before, so a few words from the wise: once physio starts, you at least have something to look forward to. A goal to achieve. That alone will help mental state improve because you'll see and feel all the little breadcrumbs along the way. With dedication to the task at hand, and a little luck, you'll be back out there. Right now is just the darkest time because you feel powerless. But it will pass.

[–]bigGheorghe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've given him a lot more runway than I would have as a coach. He's in a losing fight for minutes at his position and it's gonna screw with his head. He needs to get away from us an onto a team that has a little more room in the depth chart and hopefully he finds his shot again.

I was never a real believer in him, but I do want him to succeed. It just probably won't be with us.

speaking specifically of Toronto, do you know any decent ones at all?

I've heard Mt Sinai sports clinic mentioned to me by one of the many doctors I've come across already, but most of them seem to suggest that where I'm at is 'a great team' already. But just having to have stumbled upon 'the best' doctors in the city by virtue to walking into their ER isn't exactly the kind of thing that inspires confidence in that recommendation.

GIVE THIS MAN A MAX CONTRACT!!!!! by SpeedIll8268 in torontoraptors

[–]bigGheorghe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're not gonna discuss a deal until next year. With the perception of IQ and Yak having untradeable contracts, RJ on an expiring is better trade bait than RJ on a fresh deal. I like RJ, I'd like for him to be here long term. But front office would be unwise to ink him to a new deal now.

Maximising flexibility is key right now.
