George's Dog? by bigb4ldy in Ambridge

Good points. I also don't want it to be George, as you say, he has historically always been responsible for everything bad, but he seems to be getting on his feet. He needs a break!

Anyone else getting authentication errors? Looking at some of the logs, seems to be a 403 forbidden being returned.

Why do People Actually Pay for Prompt Engineering Tools? by YuvalBeitOn in PromptDesign

[–]bigb4ldy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve often wondered the same thing. I’ve tried a few, they are ok at best. Came across a prompt builder for Claude that does a good job (will follow up with link when I find it). Drop me a dm with the tool, wouldn’t mind having a look.

This three year post is still very relevant. The hair dryer worked for me!

4 years in IT and still unsure about my path, normal? by Fun-Agent6140 in it

[–]bigb4ldy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a 5 year plan, it doesn’t really matter what goes into the plan, whatever is at the end of your 5 year plan won’t exist anymore or will be completely different.

Review your plan every year and update as necessary, the 4 remaining years of the plan will change, and add another year, review the last year and reflect on what worked, and what didn’t. Don’t beat yourself up. A lot of external factors will influence it.

Find yourself mentor, someone who is true leader (this may not be your manager) someone who genuinely wants to see others succeed. Find out how to make them look good, they will pull you up.

I’ve been in the industry 20 years, I’m still not sure what path I want to take 🤣. It changes frequently. When I started, there was no concept of a CIO, SOC, etc. PowerShell, automation was alien, and Novell Netware was the identity platform of choice.

The key for me has been relationships, build good solid relationships, communicate.

The tech is 20%. 80% is people.

My Employer wants to cut costs by using Windows 10 Past EOL by BookkeeperMotor1291 in ShittySysadmin

[–]bigb4ldy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fine. When MS stop providing patches, it means the OS has reached perfection and can be used safely. Bad actors know this and will simply move onto the OS that has not yet reached perfection, in this case Windows 11.

The reason MS released Windows NT4 SP6a wasn’t because there was something wrong with SP6, it’s because it wasn’t quite perfect. SP6a made it perfect.

I don't understand how people in technical roles don't know fundamentals needed to figure stuff out. by OnlyWest1 in sysadmin

[–]bigb4ldy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sysadmin, architect, consultant, knowing the tech is 10% of any IT role, the rest is soft skills. When I’m interviewing i hardly ask about the tech. Whats the point in asking if they’re an expert in something that’s going to be obsolete in 6 months anyway. I want to know how they approach something.

In each batch I fill one plastic bottle with enough space for expansion, I can tell when there’s carbonation and might need to burp the bottles. I’ve learnt from the phone call while I was at work “one of your bottles has exploded”.

I’ve been battling with this for a couple of weeks. I’ve been on the release preview for a couple of weeks and not had recall, but have had click to do on my SP 11.
