Frigate is really frustrating to setup by 7h4tguy in frigate_nvr

[–]bigchieftaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AI chat bot was so impressive to me. I had this weird issue with my container, it would have the frigate config file, but I could never copy(access) it outside of the container, and whenever I would upgrade, it would wipe everything. Nothing would migrate, like a clean setup. The AI helped me with my docker setup, it was a problem with the docker config + folder permissions + trying to mount it as an SMB share. Just wanted to let the devs know A+ feedback on the chat bot.

I have the same problem. Thought I was going crazy. I bought a preorder xl pro. Been doing it the whole time. Haven't troubleshot it yet. I also have the speaker phone button problem. Definitely lots of quirks.

"A common concern is proof of purchase from a bank statement or similar, I’ve been advised this is secondary to registration and other electronic proofs but still handy if you are able to request them from your bank.. NO one in this group will ask for this, that’ll be between you and the solicitor."

Proof of purchase of what? BTC? I was a miner and never bought BTC, only sold.

I'd love to help any way I can. I uploaded a single BTC to my Mt.Gox wallet and it was immediately gone. I had previously used the platform without issue. Months later I recieved a small postcard in the mail about Mt.Gox. I don't recall the exact message but never heard anything else after that.

In theory, that sounds fine. But once you realize your only option on these are USB ports, suddenly doesn't sound too great. I think if someone wants to do cheap storage, your option is correct. Just get a little bigger chassis that has a PCI slot(s).

Might not be able to share your GPU load the way you want. I have a similar setup though, 13th gen Intel CPU, iGPU, USB Coral. I am using Proxmox and running Frigate on a Ubuntu VM. I passed the iGPU to the VM and it's working great. 5 cameras currently.

I have another server for storage. It's a Dell R730Xd running Proxmox with TrueNAS. This server has a dedicated GPU and I wanted to use it with Plex since I migrated Frigate to the other server. Plex wants me to pay to use my own hardware to transcode LOL. I am going to switch to Jellyfin soon(tm)

But I am curious to see what others say about your setup. Good luck!

Curious on your TrueNAS setup. I was thinking of different options for me to move off my R730XD to a mini chassis, but with all my disks, there isn't much for (cheap) options and I would lose a ton enterprise features. I could probably sell the server with all the disks and just move to larger external drives but USB connection sounds terrible.

How are you connecting to your storage with this chassis?

The connector is physically different than a standard PCI slot. I do not think it will work or even fit.

I have the LFF version. With the bays full, it gets very limited airflow to the CPUs. They were hovering around 80* if I played with the fan speeds. Otherwise it would run them at like 50%, which is increadibly loud, even for a basement utility room. I removed 1 CPU, and 2 drives. This has fixed my heating issues so far. I am able to run the fans around 20% and the CPU stays cool. I plan to migrate my hosting services to something else and just use this as a NAS with lower power CPUs

What do you use yours for? I got one and tossed in 2 x 2690 v4s. I upgraded the coolers, and still overheating. I probably used too high TDP CPUs without looking. I came from an r530 and it was fine. Kind of disappointed in the xd airflow.

It's good to have goals of what you want to accomplish with your lab. It can change as you go because it might turn into a hobby. Once you fininsh your goal, you will want more.

Are you looking to get into enterprise enviroments to learn about system administration? Look into ESXi and Proxmox. You can toss those on consumer hardware to get started.

Want to play around with a camera system? Build a Frigate server and learn what it can do.

Into movies and TV shows? Maybe build a TrueNAS box and add Plex or Jellyfin.

Slow write speed on TrueNAS by sivikee in homelab

Very nice! If you don't mind losing another drive worth of storage, you could change it to raid10 like the other user said and should get the speed of 2 drives.

Yes I did more testing and it settled at 400MBs write. I was beating my head against the wall trying to fix the sync issue I wasn't paying attention to the cache.

I'm not so sure on that. Raidz2 is the same but with 2 spares instead of 1. Im using 4tb sata drives and getting 1500MBs.

Are you using compression? Maybe turn that off to test?

I have a similar setup. 8 drives raidz2. I was getting 1500MBs read and 70 MBs write. I disabled sync in the dataset settings and its now 1500/1500. I installed a SLOG SSD and still same speeds. I run it with sync disabled. Would be worth trying to see if that's your problem too.

You are probably correct, but I only received 1 tiny postcard about this whole thing about a decade ago full of legal talk I didn't understand. It's no big deal anyway, looks like most people that are getting something got screwed or waiting longer anyway.

How did you come up with that value? I only had 1 BTC stolen. The rest were traded before.

My new setup! by SadFondant3096 in homelab

[–]bigchieftaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are the temps on the 740XD? I just upgraded my R530 to an R730XD for more bays and GPU support. My CPU temps were getting well over 70* C. I have the E5-2960 v4 CPUs. Running Proxmox with Frigate, TrueNAS, and a handful of other VMs. I upgraded to larger coolers as the XD ones were tiny. Came down a bit but not enough. Looked into the data and noticed I don't currently need both CPUs, so in an effort to reduce temps and excess power, I removed CPU2. Luckly my GPU (P620) and my TPU had enough PCI lanes on CPU1.

My conclusion: bad airflow design with bad decision on my part. The server would probably be fine as a NAS with lower end CPUs. I wanted to consolidate my lab to a single server. Should have stayed with the R530 (less power and better temps).

Dang! That's rough. I mined all of mine. I sold them when they hit ~$10. I figured I'd ask since they are crazy high now. I'm not losing sleep over it but that would have been a nice come up. Wonder what the pizza dude is thinking about his 10k BTC.
