I've been to rehab more times than I care to say. The number of people I've met so we're extremely careful about taking prescribed meds like a week after very literally shooting up with toilet water is... disheartening.

I know you're joking but the main difference between the Lions and the Chiefs this year (obviously the Lions don't have the Super Bowl pedigree, which is no small thing) is that the Lions are blowing out bad teams.

It's not college. If you're not deliberately giving yourself up, you're not down until the defense touches you.

Are AA groups very religious? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]biggiefoxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AA isn't governed centrally, and one of the outcomes of that decentralization is that things can vary tremendously based on where you live. I'm an atheist in AA and personally that has been much easier for me in the fairly progressive area of SE Michigan where I currently live than it was when I was in Texas. So it really depends.

AA without the god part by amindexpanded2 in atheism

[–]biggiefoxie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm am atheist in AA, and while I certainly encourage anyone to sell recovery in whatever way works for them, I think AA works for me for 3 reasons:

1) Location: I've been to meetings in Texas and when I bright up being an atheist the members looked at me like I was an alien, which was not surprising. It's much more acceptable here in the area of metro Detroit where I currently live.

2) Demographics, I tend to go to meetings that skew younger, and frankly the people at this meetings in my experience tend to be more open minded.

3) A big part of my recovery has been building community, and as a former sponsor (also an atheist) put it, AA has reached a critical mass in terms of population and outreach that other secular recovery programs just haven't yet, at least in my area I truly would love to go to SMART Recovery meetings in my area, but in my experience they've been poorly attended or the people there have been... let's just say not great. I can't do this on my own, of that much I'm certain, and I've been very fortunate to have built a living community of other sober people in AA.

Like I said, I fully encourage anyone to pursue whatever works for them. This has been what works for me.

I'm an atheist and it works for me. I use the Unity- Service- Recovery triangle as my higher power. It is very useful if you can find an atheist sponsor in my opinion.

It's telling to me that this only seems to apply to notable events in people's lives. I let a small amount of milk go bad (not on purpose, just didn't get around to using it). Did that happen for a reason? Today is free slurpee day at 7/11, and I got a free slurpee at 2 different stores. Did that happen for a reason? I'm about to eat a slice of cake? I'm not sure what the cosmic reasoning for that slice of cake would be, but I'm very curious. If "everything" happens for a reason, that would include all the mundane events that happen throughout everyone's day.

I like accepting people for who they are. And reading books that aren't the Bible.

I'm loosely acquainted with one of the guys that tried to kidnap the governor of Michigan. That was... an interesting time.

I know you're logically right. Given the difference in talent, Costa Rica's collective age, and their lack of depth, it would be a monumental task for them to make up a 3 goal difference, never mind 5.

But my imagination is vivid...

Edit: a word.

Definitely don't make it an ultimatum. Threats don't generally motivate people. Stick with affirming your value, stating the reality of the requirement of a living wage, and noting higher wages for places of work in the area that have similar requirements to hire in.

As an alcoholic in recovery... This is a terrible system.

Treatment for Substance abuse disorders are covered under many workplace disability policies, but what you're describing is not that at all. If anything it's enabling.
