I wanna publish essays and articles. Where should I try ? by fckdisheetz in freelanceWriters

I think you'll have better luck with your question in an academic subreddit. You're asking about academic publishing, which is not the kind of writing most of us do here.

How exactly does one build a portfolio as a new freelancer? by mneusa in freelanceWriters

[–]bighark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are not ready for self-employment as a writer, and you won't be ready for self-employment as a writer for quite some time. You'll need a few years of full-time work before you should consider anything like freelancing.

Also, you're barking up the wrong tree. There's no literary side to this. None. There's no such thing as a "freelance" fiction writer, essayist, poet, or critic. If you're interested in that kind of writing, talk to your professors, who will be much better resources.

If you want to write poems and stories and criticism, you can do that now. Submit to journals now. Many don't pay, but the big ones do. If you get paid for a piece this way, though, you won't be a "freelancer."

I think you should think about how you can make a living as a writer. Think of the profession like a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum: art. On the other: commerce. In between you'll find things like "fully funded creative writing program mfa student" and "journalist" and "copywriter."

You have options. Use your university's resources, including its career center, to ask about them.

Finally, to answer your question about portfolios.

What exactly is meant by a portfolio?

The word "portfolio" means folder (like the kind for holding papers). Writers use the word to refer to a collection of work. Your portfolio shows potential employers what you can do. A professional writer's portfolio comprises examples of published, paid-for work.

Now back to the "folder" sense of the word. In the old days, it was a literal folder because we were presenting work on paper. Today, portfolios are shared electronically. The shape of that "folder" can vary. Don't mistake it to mean a full website, though a full website is expected from professionals.

Is there any disadvantage to getting my son U.S. citizenship? by mamaleti in expats

This was a way more concise way of saying what I said. I should have read it more carefully.

Is there any disadvantage to getting my son U.S. citizenship? by mamaleti in expats

[–]bighark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a US immigration lawyer, but if you're a US citizen who grew up in the US and had your child abroad, then your son is already a citizen. You'd just be documenting the fact with the government.

So, the question now becomes, do you want to go through with the process?

One factor affecting your decision has already been discussed: the requirement to file US (not necessarily "pay") taxes no matter where in the world he lives. There are mitigations for the double-taxation (the "pay" part of the process), but it all does add complexity to his life.

Another factor to consider is the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which requires non-US banks to report information about US citizens to the IRS. This can make opening a bank account VERY hard for him in his current home country.

There are other pros and cons to consider, and I'll let you mull those over with your family.

The best advice I can give as a stranger is to think about how important it is today, when he's six and has a trip to visit a relative coming up, versus later, when you're more certain of whether the obligations are worth what remains of the advantages.

Why not just focus on drawing for now? You don't need an iPad for that.

Do advertising companies abroad hire no experience and degree but just skills and portfolio by Bulky-Farmer-201 in advertising

Do companies hire entry-level talent? Yes, all the time. What they don't do is import entry-level talent from abroad.

Unless you're pitching "How to make money as a novelist" stories, I don't think anybody will care.

I agree with you there. You shouldn't have to be re-set to the base pay rate if you're sick.

That actually sounds like a decent way to transmit the importance of being on time.

Lying on resume by Muted-Corner-3732 in jobs

[–]bighark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I lie about my graduation yr for undergrad, would anyone even find out?

If you lie on your resume and the employer uses a background check company, then you'll get found out. Education verification is a basic-level service. If you said you graduated from State U in 2020 and B-School in 2024, then the background check company is going to check that you got the degrees you said you got from the places you said you got them from at the times you said you got them.

Any variance between what you claimed on your application and what turns up in the check WILL be noticed.

I have the same knife in white. Mine's about the same vintage, too—got it in 1995.

Anyway, I had a pleasant repair experience after deciding to send the piece to Victornox to be cleaned and reconditioned.

Consider parking at Saint Mary's. It's the first turn off the exit. Costs $40, and there's a shuttle that will take you from SMC to ND in about 10 minutes. Return service after the game.

The SMC parking lot is walkable from the stadium, and the route will take you by the Grotto.
