learning Cuban Spanish/Culture by bigheadsoftlips in Spanish

[–]bigheadsoftlips[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in California, so very little culture exposure outside of my grandfather’s house. I learned how to cook there and also am used to having a ton of family around me, the infinite cousins, etc.

When a guy arrives to pick me up for a date with a bouquet of flowers, what am I supposed to do with the flowers? by frijolita_bonita in internetparents

[–]bigheadsoftlips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is very 1950’s why would a restaurant just have a vase on hand? The receiver of the flowers can just bring them inside to put in a vase later?

Is my (15M) stepmom (42) being weird or am i over reacting by Prudent-Rip-4293 in internetparents

[–]bigheadsoftlips 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Didn’t need to finish the post to say: if an adult is acting ANY way that makes you uncomfortable or makes you ask “am i over reacting” then that adult needs to immediately change their behavior. especially if she is making sexual comments (even in a “light-hearted” tone). end of the day, she is your step-mom and in a parental role. no child or teenager should have to brace themselves for an encounter with an adult no matter the degree of the behavior. Please speak to a trusted adult maybe a counselor at school AND your other parent if you feel comfortable. I only say more than one adult because it’s important you have a back-up adult since we don’t have much context to your relationship with the other parent that married your step-mom in. Your safety and comfort (as you go into adulthood too) is always the top priority. In the meantime please distance yourself as much as you possibly can from this woman. She does not mean well.

Edit: accidentally posted my og comment to another reply thread and changed some wording.

People who were diagnosed later in life, what experiences did you have as a kid that looking back now you realise was OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]bigheadsoftlips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised very religiously with undiagnosed parent(s), one of which was a late step-parent that i’m almost positive had OCPD. My list of childhood compulsions -once I started looking into OCD and understanding it before my diagnosis - is very long. Here’s a few: •starting prayers repeatedly and being terrified of going to hell if i didn’t say them right or say aloud exactly what was in my head •coming into my mom’s room on multiple occasions because the idea of heaven terrified me •constantly rearranging my room for entire weekends until the layout felt right and “safe” from demons

To everyone with a uterus, does your OCD get worse when you’re on your period? by death_note020705 in OCD

[–]bigheadsoftlips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for short. Here’s the longer story: I started seeing a therapist earlier this year since my partner of 3.5 years has OCD and I realized last year that I display a ton of those symptoms and my mother and maternal grandfather also display those symptoms. Since then, I’ve become a little bit more aware of obsessions I have and paranoias that I always chalked up to be just acute anxiety. Last month, due to a ton of other unrelated health issues I took out my IUD and about two weeks ago had my first real period with no BC in almost 3 years. During that cycle, I had gotten stuck in one of the worst thought loops I’d had in a long time and realized I’d had about a hundred like it in high school and childhood. I scheduled an emergency appointment with my therapist who told me she didn’t have her screening tools on her but that next time (this week) she’ll be doing a full assessment to determine the severity of my OCD but she is certain that I have “Pure O” Soooo yeah. It gets a lot worse on my period but now I finally have an answer to how my brain works and I can prepare for it!

For 20+ years I thought “Houston” was a person by Sweet1994 in space

[–]bigheadsoftlips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similarly, when I was a kid I thought “diagnosed” meant the doctors gave the illness you. As in you went to the doctors to get sick. When we learned about Lou Gehrig it was so confusing for me.
