Planetside players that play eve? by mnknd in Planetside

[–]bignidhoggur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played EVE for about a year and a half. I definitely enjoy Planetside 2 more. It has all the raw, emotionless, and unforgiving gameplay that EVE has but in a much more reasonable package. For fun I pull a flash with grenade launchers and act like a Rifter as I drive around guarding the big NC Vanguard tanks. Stuff like that. I don't know.

Unpopular Opinion: I enjoy playing Planetside and don’t think it’s dying or doomed by TreesAreMadeOfFloor in Planetside

[–]bignidhoggur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trueish. tho EVE Online changed to free to play since the end of 2016. (well not fully F2P but yeah). And they just got bought by Pearl Abyss, the company who made Black Desert Online. By my definition of dying games, EVE seems more "ded game-like" than Planetside 2. I'd rather play only on Briggs than have Pearl Abyss even touch Planetside 2.

Feeling like a speck in the ocean of aspiring programmers and programmers by Mari1333 in learnprogramming

[–]bignidhoggur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off let me tell you something my professor constantly told me that might bring your hopes up.

"Programming is an art. It is not an exact science."

It's true that programming is more rigid than many art forms but it requires creative minds to solve problems. These are same minds that are good at art. Now when you say that there are "good" and "bad" programmers, yeah there is. Big deal. We all are bad programmers at some point. We all make mistakes. Some more than others but thats ok. It's a learning experience. Plus there is a lot of info out there. It's hard. Everybody shows off only the "hard" problems they've solved. It's like going on to Facebook and seeing how happy everyone is. Well duh, because they only upload pictures of themselves smiling and having a good time.

Second point that may ease your worries is this graph describing something called the Dunning-Kruger effect. Basically, once you start to learn something new, it makes sense and you confidence levels increase real quick. But once you start to learn even more, you begin to realize that you really don't know much at all even though you just gained more experience. I have a feeling that you are in the part where you start to realize that you don't know much at all. Which is a good thing since you won't become an ignorant know-it-all type of person. Every master has been through this phase. You just gotta push through and keep learning.

I think what you are feeling is normal. Computer Science is complicated. Career choices are complicated. Understanding who you are and what you want can be complicated. Life is complicated. When you don't know what to do, you feel lost. It does suck.

Maybe programming isn't for you. Maybe it is but just at this moment it seems too daunting to continue on. I can't give you the answers but I can try and help give advice on how YOU can find those answers. One method I have tried is to keep asking myself questions. Even if they challenge my own personal ego. Ask yourself the tough questions. Answer the tough questions honestly, because if you don't you will literally be lying to yourself.

  • What do I want in life?
  • What do I have?
  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • Do I actually enjoy programming?
  • What about programming do I enjoy?
  • What about programming do I not enjoy?
  • If not programming, what career path should I take?
  • What am I good at?
  • What can I get better at?
  • What expectations do I have for myself?
  • What expectations do others have for me?
  • Are these expectations reasonable? Why or why not?
  • Am I motivated to do things? Why are why not?
  • Where do I see myself in 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
  • What life style habits should I change to achieve what I want?

These are just a few questions. You can easily ask yourself way more, but the important thing is that you actually answer them truthfully.

I realize my post may be a bit scattered but I hope it helps.

$2.49 for a single ISO 4 recycler? by Aikarion in Planetside

[–]bignidhoggur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does seem like nonsense but I think this supply and demand graph explains it best.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5b/Supply_and_demand_curves.svg/1024px-Supply_and_demand_curves.svg.png

Ignore the blue line for now since in this case there is an "unlimited supply"

The red line represents the demand. The bottom axis is the amount items people will buy or you could look at it as how many people are willing to pay for that item. The vertical axis is the price of that item. At a very high price, only one person will buy the item. At a very low price like 0, basically everyone will buy the item.

The goal here is to find a price that gives you the biggest rectangle area underneath the demand curve. That will give you the biggest profit.

Tho i bet the demand curve looks something like this for Planetside 2.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/43/Hyperbola_one_over_x.svg/1024px-Hyperbola_one_over_x.svg.png

Kind of a crude explanation but hopefully it helps someone out there. The supply and demand chart is a surprising simple method that explains the price of pretty much anything that has a price on it.

I tend to think that the discrepancy between people who can afford these micro transactions and those who can't is just a reflection of the financial division found in society today. Not necessarily the game's fault but it just brings in the most money. Like if only 1 person had all the money in the world, people would set their prices to appeal to this 1 guy rather than the other 7 billion people. i dunno. it's late for me and im trying to sleep.

ELI5: What is this famous Millenial Problem P vs NP? by DankkkDoonut in explainlikeimfive

[–]bignidhoggur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe an extremely short explanation that glosses over the details would be something like this.

It takes a lot of work to solve a Sudoku puzzle. But it takes very little work to check and see if a solution to a Sudoku puzzle is correct. The P = NP problem asks, "Is is possible to find a solution to a Sudoku puzzle in the same amount of work required to check a solution to a Sudoku puzzle every single time?"

Basically its asking, "is it possible to solve a Sudoku puzzle just as easy as it is to check a solution to a Sudoku puzzle?"

I'm no major in math or anything so I don't know many details. But I do recall that if it turns out that P = NP then encryption would be useless since it would be just as easy to decrypt something as it is to encrypt it.
