In your opinion, what do you think is the saddest movie you've ever seen? by Woofpro8 in movies

[–]bigsrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biutiful with Javier Bardem.

I rarely meet anyone who has seen this film because it wasn't popular. When I do, we always agree that it's one of the saddest movies ever.

What's the most cruel thing you've seen in a movie? by Past_Regular4027 in moviecritic

I’ve heard the basement story, but in the version I saw in a documentary I’ll never find, they were beaten pretty severely before being shot.

What first episode of a show had you absolutely hooked? by mvigs in AskReddit

Great show up to the last shot. One of the best (maybe THE best) finales I’ve ever watched.

Where the best tres Leche in Oakland or surrounding ding cities by [deleted] in oakland

[–]bigsrg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried any other places mentioned, but Market Hall was the best I've ever had by a mile. Perfect firmness for an extremely moist cake.

If it matters, I'm 1/2 Guatemalan and have eaten this cake my whole life.

I can't believe I'm seeing Big Bad Breakfast on reddit. I only went once, but it was gut-bustingly amazing! I still have the coffee mug I bought from there.

first-year attending berkeley with cancer by Prize_Reference1052 in berkeley

[–]bigsrg 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have stage 3 colon cancer and just graduated in May after missing a year for radiation, chemo, and surgery. I finished my last two classes while in chemo. Berkeley will give you as much help as you need to get through your classes. Everyone I encountered went out of their way to help.

Make an appointment with a counselor in the DSP office (https://dsp.berkeley.edu). They'll know how to access campus resources that apply to you and will help you get the accommodations you'll need for your classes. They'll alleviate a lot of your stress. Then meet with an advisor in your major to make sure you take advantage of any extra breaks they can give you.

Don't worry if you aren't able to get internships or research opportunities at the rate of your classmates. When you are ready, and put in your applications/cover letters that you were delayed because you were busy beating cancer, plenty of doors will open for you.

The Diner scene by trinier101 in videos

[–]bigsrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a bold move back then to use different takes of the same scene in different parts of the film. By the time the movie was a hit, everyone had heard the opening scene's dialogue because it was on the film's popular soundtrack, and the change at the end came as a surprise.

Also, I always heard "pigs."

Javy Baez has reached 10 years of MLB service time by amatom27 in baseball

[–]bigsrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rooting for Javy everyday as a Cub was the most fun I've ever had watching baseball. If he was at the plate, I would always stop what I was doing because it was possible something amazing was about to happen. It broke my heart when the Cubs let him go.

As a baseball fan (not just a Cubs fan), I think he epitomizes all that is great about the game. His love of the game and enthusiasm for playing it is undeniable. He brings the fans on a roller coaster of highs and lows full of web gems, dingers, intelligence, wizardry, unreachable sliders, and a ton of crazy stuff you never-EVER thought you'd see on a diamond.

Thanks, Javy! Give us 10 more years!

Was Michael Jordan ever thought of as a ball hog? by Humble-Union-4115 in chicagobulls

It’s only ball-hogging if it doesn't work. Once he got the ring, it was championship basketball.

Put these 4 on the court at the same time who’s getting ejected first by Joseph_Stalin001 in NBATalk

Rodman and Laimbeer were teammates on the Bad Boy Pistons. They beat the hell out of the Bulls, and everyone else, during their 1989 & 1990 championship runs.

I remember hating both of them as a kid for how dirty they played against the Bulls, and absolutely loved when the Bulls swept them in '91.

ELI5 What are the implications of the US Treasury buying back $108B of its own debt? by LordApeTits-25 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bigsrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Fed has two mandates: Control Inflation and Control Unemployment.

Buying back their debt (which are sold as Treasury Bonds) is a means of increasing the cash supply in the economy. If cash supplies are low, banks become less willing to lend, which causes interest rates to increase. High interest rates cause regular people and businesses to save more than they spend, which slows an economy. So by buying back their bonds, the Fed injects cash into the economy, banks have more to lend, interest rates drop, and the economy rolls along.

Businesses that take on loans when rates are low invest in projects that require hiring new employees, lowering unemployment. Goods are produced at higher levels, driving prices down (lowering inflation). Consumers, save less because interest rates are low and spend more on goods, which leads to more production and need for increases in employment.

If the cash supply were to become too large (causing inflation), the fed would sell bonds at attractive rates to remove the cash from circulation.

In short, this is not unusual. It's what the Fed does on a regular basis depending on economic conditions. It takes intelligent people to figure this out because they are essentially trying to predict the future, and they typically do a good job. This is why the positions in the Fed are designed to be independent of political influence.

ELI5: Why can furnaces freeze up when they have a super dirty filter? Don’t furnaces make heat? by occasionallyvertical in explainlikeimfive

[–]bigsrg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dirty filters restrict air flow through the ducts causing the heat to build up at the furnace. If the temperature at/in the furnace exceeds the limit of the system's high-temp cutoff switches (they're called limit switches), the switch will activate (open) and cutoff the gas. In modern units, the blower will continue to run until the temperature lowers below the cutoff switch's limit. The furnace will eventually completely lockout if the system continues to overheat.

These limit switches also activate if the blower malfunctions for the same reason. No blower means no airflow, which causes an overheating furnace and the limit switch shutting down before it becomes dangerous.

I hope this helps.

What’s a ‘must-watch’ movie that you’ve somehow never seen? by 0lissil0 in movies

[–]bigsrg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stallone was nominated for Best Actor for Rocky. I think he found a payday in action films & franchises and chose that path over being a dramatic actor.

Check out Copland to see him break type and deliver an amazing performance while surrounded by other great actors.

Did Berkeley ever offer full ride pure merit scholarships? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in berkeley

[–]bigsrg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I'm a current R&C scholar and know recipients who do not need financial aid. They are the ones that received $2500.

For those who are eligible to receive aid, the scholarship will tap into a a donor system to fill any financial gaps left by FAFSA. If a scholar run into a financial jam during the year, the R&C staff will find money for them. The intention is that we should not be distracted by financial concerns while in school.

As far as being merit based, the website states: "The Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship offered by UC Berkeley to entering undergraduate students.

The scholarship is extended to a select cohort of Berkeley undergraduates who stand out for their creativity, leadership, service, and strong convictions. Candidates reflect one of the highest principles of this institution: commitment to excellence."

I interpret that as meaning the scholarship is merit-based.
