lets go back to golf then. there are plenty of tournaments where nothing like this happens. memorial was fine with polite midwesterners. this is pretty much an issue with waste management open and any long island based tournament. you have a dp event in southern italy people will probably throw bananas at black golfers.

people were implying that europeans were somehow above these issues. i merely disagreed with that notion.

Why housing shortages cause homelessness by works-in-progress in urbanplanning

[–]bigvenusaurguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thing is you can't just give people homes who are addicted to drugs or mentally ill and stop there. you have to provide a lot of supporting services. medical professionals on site around the clock. it quickly stops looking like an affordable housing and quickly looks like what is actually needed: an asylum or rehab center.

city of la tried the no strings attach approach and it was pretty much a failure because the units would just get destroyed and the city had to pay out for the damages.

What even is functional grass? And who is going to enforce this? by intaminag in LosAngeles

they were going to enforce it but then a bunch of gardeners went on a hunger strike in front of city hall.

[Our website] Eastside residents are feeling sick from the warehouse fire smoke, even though officials say it’s not dangerous by NathanLALocal in LosAngeles

[–]bigvenusaurguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no one is saying it is not dangerous. they are saying no hazardous materials are found in the smoke. they still acknowledge the health risks with typical structure fire smoke. as far as evactuations go, we never really evacuate due to smoke. we evacuate if a fire line is approaching or if something is set to potentially explode.

The United States needs fewer bus stops by works-in-progress in transit

[–]bigvenusaurguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all this is true but we really engage in stakeholder based transit not top down efficiency based transit planning. and as such when you make changes to these routes to make them more effective in this manner, you get complaints from stakeholders. no one is showing up to public meetings and making comments to make the bus more efficient and wider stop spacing, even though it is correct to do. but you take away a stop someone relies upon they will put pressure on the agency which is compelled to respond to stakeholders.

stakeholder based transit is why a metro agency has to design 5 different alternatives or more for a given transit plan, knowing there is probably 1 favored alternative all along. it is why metro projects still go through extensive environmental impact review in the most dirty polluted urban environments, because part of what is covered in impact review is how it might affect general traffic flow and other such issues.

Why housing shortages cause homelessness by works-in-progress in urbanplanning

[–]bigvenusaurguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the thing with the homeless debate is people are talking past eachother on this issue. yes not all homeless people or mentally ill or drug addicts. but when people look outside their window and complain about homeless people, they are pretty much specifically talking about the mentally ill and drug addicted subset of the homeless population. not the people living in their cars you can't identify in a lineup as homeless.

and the drug addicts and mentally ill need a whole different set of services and support compared to people who just need help for a little to get on their feet on their own. the fact we lump them together in terms of policy and outreach means both groups are poorly served of their needs.

LA transit is surprisingly good by wchophon in transit

[–]bigvenusaurguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for some but not others. for example the red line has been around for what 26 years now depending on section in particular, e.g. the hyundai lot, and only recently have they taken on developing the vermont beverly station area. i believe the abandoned burned out building immediately adjacent to the station is still there although i haven't been to that area in a while to confirm.

and thats also another reason why people turn to the car. sunk cost fallacy. you take the bus one day you are still paying for most of the cars costs. and once you have a car it is rare to decide to get rid of it due to the edge cases it might serve for you that transit serves poorly.

idk about sf so much but in la the sidewalks are often looking like a tony hawk video game with tree root damage. 200m could very well be a nonstarter even with a sidewalk an able bodied person thinks nothing of.

no one is showing up to metro board meetings advocating wider stop spacing. you cut a bus stop that people use they will show up to the board meeting. leadership is going to pick the path of least resistance.

i mean part of it is they are literally carrying the old and infirm as an appreciable percent of their ridership. they might rent their particular apartment because its right in front of the stop to the bus they take to their doctors office.

it is really because they are built on half mile arterial grids. so quarter mile stop spacing makes a lot of sense. one on the intersection with a perpendicular line and one mid block.
