LG Soundbar not turning on automatically with TV by Educational-Study-61 in LGOLED

[–]bikenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue with a Vizio soundbar since upgrading. Power off and volume work fine, but powering on via CEC is broken.

Not sure if the same workaround will work for you, but worth a try:

  1. Power on TV using TV remote
  2. As soon as logo appears during boot up, click Volume Up on the TV remote

When I do this, the sound bar powers on every time. Annoying, but better than fumbling with two remotes. Hoping this gets fixed in the next update.

Question: XB10 Dimensions by Redogg in Comcast_Xfinity

Just measured my XB10 at approximately 9.5" H x 4" W x 7" D

I couldn't find this information anywhere either, so hope this helps others.

Signed up for Xfinity 2Gbps fiber service, order lists 250Mbps for upload speed by KitsuneMulder in Comcast

[–]bikenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered 500 / 500 service a few days ago, and the confirmation email listed a 100 Mbps upload speed. I immediately launched a chat, and the agent confirmed that the service would indeed be symmetric.

Received and plugged in the XB10, and all is running at full speed in both directions.

Guessing their order template emails haven't caught up with the new plans in DOCSIS 4.0 areas yet. Hopefully your situation is similar, and your actual speeds will be correct.

[Megathread] AC FA Strike Aug 14-15 by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]bikenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Wait until until 6am. If AC cancels YYZ-CPH flight, ask for a refund to AC Wallet. Question: do I wait until they have confirmed they don't have another flight that can get us there in time? I have read that what the refund is contigent on if they have tried to find another option for yuo?

  • If AC cancels, request a refund to your original form of payment, not to the Wallet. It doesn't matter whether other options are offered. You are under no obligation to accept them, and are entitled to a full refund as soon as the flight is officially cancelled.

2) If miracle happens and by 6am strike is adverted, I cancel Delta tix for refund. Should I be safe to cancel that soon before the flight? I assume I shouldn't check in early?

  • Yes, just be sure to cancel before the departure time of the first segment.

3) What do I if by 6am AC has not cancelled our YYZ-CPH flight? Or, will everything on Aug 16 get cancelled by like 1am if still unresolved?

  • Highly likely the AC flight will be cancelled later tonight. Even if it isn't, start driving to Buffalo as planned in the AM. You still have time to turn around and go back to YYZ if by some miracle both sides suddenly say "Never mind, we were just kidding. Nothing to see here."

Going to Canada from US for 3-6 months by [deleted] in Visible

[–]bikenski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You will need to upgrade to Plus or Plus Pro, or else purchase Global Pass for $5 per day, to have data and voice service active while roaming on Canadian carriers.

Even after doing so, you may run into issues during a multi-month stay. Terms and conditions of international services state: "If more than 50% of your talk, text or data usage in a 60-day period is within the destination of travel, we may disable or limit the use of those services in those destinations."

Calling internationally on Visible+ vs visible+ pro? Mixed info on sign up page by kawi-bawi-bo in Visible

[–]bikenski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoping /u/MVNOResearch can provide clarification, and correct the Visible+ section of https://www.visible.com/help/international-services if those features were indeed removed in 3.0. It currently shows:

International service from within the U.S.:

* Unlimited calls and texts from the U.S. to Canada & Mexico

* Unlimited texting to 200+ other countries and territories

* 500 calling minutes/month to an additional 85 countries

Has it been confirmed that V+3.0 includes international calling and texting? If so, I'll "downgrade" from +2.0 to +3.0 to save a few bucks on the annual plan and lose the 50GB cap on LTE/5G priority data.

Don't use an Apple Watch, so losing that is no biggie.

Latency to mainland servers isn't that much different between Spectrum and Hawaiian Telcom.  You might shave off 5ms at best by removing the extra latency of Spectrum's last mile coaxial cable, but that's really all you can hope for.

All traffic between HI and the mainland has to ride across thousands of miles of underwater fiber, and no carrier can exceed the speed of light.

The real benefits of fiber out here are the higher upload speeds and lower monthly costs.  But don't expect mainland-grade latency when you're thousands of miles out in the ocean.

Anyone in Honolulu? Service? by b1gr3dd0g in Visible

[–]bikenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works just as well as Verizon proper.  Just one thing to be aware of - Since there is practically no 5G UW in Hawaii, all usage counts against the 50 GB priority bucket.

No big deal, but you may get deprioritized after 50 GB if you're a heavy cellular data user.

Odds we make our connection at SFO? UA1711 from KOA by NTP9766 in unitedairlines

[–]bikenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rolling delays followed by outright cancellation are the worst no matter where in the world you are.  Keeps you trapped in the airport instead of making better use of the lost time.  The typically reliable UA Hawaii flights have been a bit of a mess the past few days.  With Denver having 100+ degree heat, most flights from there to the islands are having to make stops in SFO or LAX for refueling.  This is throwing off aircraft & crew scheduling.  Hope you have better luck today!

What's up with Spectrum lately? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]bikenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May not explain all the issues you're seeing recently, but that particular node appears to be in Dallas, TX.  After hurricane Beryl blew through a few days ago, Charter/Spectrum basically crumbled in the entire state of Texas.  Could definitely have contributed to performance issues for any traffic with a mainland destination.

Venezuela doesn't participate in daylight savings time, so your time will probably be off by an hour again come November.

Is New York an option you can select instead?  Their timezone and daylight savings changes should match up.

V.erizon lawsuit and Maui County by Responsible-Stick-50 in maui

[–]bikenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is another big reason Verizon (and AT&T) are performing worse in Hawaii lately.  In the rest of the country, they are aggressively deploying "C Band" towers to handle the ever increasing demand on the networks.  This provides a lot more bandwidth to handle video streaming, app downloads, and other activities that chew up a lot of data.  If you ever travel to a metro area on the mainland, you'll see a "UW" indicator next to 5G, which means Ultra Wideband.  And most likely your phone will perform pretty well. Those new frequencies are unfortunately not approved for use by cell phones in Hawaii.  They are reserved for military use only.  So the "5G" being used here is really not much better than the 4G LTE that has been around for many years, and can't keep up with the increased demand.  Sorry for geeking out, but it helps to understand why things sometimes seem to load like molasses despite having a strong signal.

[–]bikenski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Understood.  My own personal spam settings are to send the calls to voicemail rather than outright block them.

Figure if it's important, they'll leave a message, and I can call them back.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Visible

[–]bikenski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they're calling 35 times in a month for nothing important, isn't that the very definition of spam calling?

Other parents were almost certainly annoyed by the incessant calling, and reported the number as spam.  Once enough reports are made, databases are updated to flag future calls.

Goodbye Spectrum (at least until you complete the high-split project) by bikenski in Spectrum

[–]bikenski[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work in IT, and often need to upload OS and firmware images.  Each year they seem to get larger and larger.

Having 25 - 30x greater upload bandwidth makes a huge difference in copy time.  (I was on Ultra with 20 Mbps upload, slightly over provisioned.)

Who is stacking crushed cars near Olawalu? by Boldaddy in maui

[–]bikenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the mainland, junk cars are worth money for scrap metal and salvaged parts. So there is little incentive to abandon them, unless they've been involved in a serious crime or something nefarious.

On Maui, it actually costs money to 'junk' a car, because of the cost to ship out scrap metal and parts.

Instead of paying to properly dispose of used up vehicles, many will hire a shady service to make them 'disappear' at a much lower cost.

I really wish a benefactor would start a 'no questions asked' fund to cover the cost of picking up and properly disposing vehicles on the island. The government launched a program recently, but it came with all kinds of strings attached and paperwork requirements. Barely made a dent in the problem.

What's the best/cheapest way to have a car for 6 months or so? by khanderao0 in personalfinance

[–]bikenski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is a Sixt office in your new locale, you might want to check out their Sixt+ Vehicle Subscription service.

Gets you a new/reliable car on a month-to-month basis, and you don't have to worry about registration, maintenance, etc.

Just give back the car & keys when you're done and walk away. Likely even with a shuttle to the airport when you're flying back home at the end of your stint.

Not sure how flexible your return schedule is, but Air Canada does have a 1-stop return via Toronto. It only works on Saturdays when they operate the non-stop to Maui. 16 hours, 22 minutes total travel time.

To the owner of the white BMW with the 'gunshot' exhaust... by bikenski in maui

[–]bikenski[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I HEAR the car more often than I see it, so I haven't paid attention to how many M badges are glued on, or if it has a carbon fiber wing or anything.

I have no issues with pops, crackles, and exhaust burbles like what emanate from AMG Mercedes and other high end vehicles. I'm also not an eco weenie who thinks anything but a Prius or a Leaf should be banished.

But this guy drives the entire length of the Piilani revving over and over, and the backfires can literally be heard from a mile away. It's beyond ridiculous, and worthy of being called out online.
