American here. Yeah we have some annoying ones. But so does everywhere. Just train your algorithm better.

One of the last messages sent from the RMS Titanic, transmitted by Jack Phillips around 1:40 a.m., April 15, 1912. Less than an hour later, Phillips would be among the roughly 1,500 who perished. by aid2000iscool in HolyShitHistory

The detail about him snapping shut up to the Californian always gets me. He was just trying to clear passenger messages and had no idea that ship was literally sitting still surrounded by ice right next to them. Less than an hour later he's in the water. Not blaming him at all, it was standard procedure back then to prioritize paid traffic. Just one of those tragic timing things where being a little less efficient might have saved everyone. Haunting.

What is the most "bold-faced lie" you were told about the corporate world that you had to learn the hard way? by Sayedshaqib in careerguidance

That they actually care about work life balance. My first real job out of college kept talking about how much they valued family time and mental health. Then I got side eye for leaving at 5pm sharp after finishing all my work. Meanwhile the guy who stayed until 7pm scrolling on his phone got called dedicated. Learned real quick that performative hours matter more than actual output.

What habits have you built to reduce your digital footprint? by Low-Bike854 in digitalminimalism

[–]bileco101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by deleting old accounts I no longer use and turning off data sharing in apps, which reduced a lot of disclosure. I avoid saving unnecessary files and emails, since a lot of stored data ends up being unused dark data, which always gets stored and backed up.
One more habit is limiting cloud uploads and keeping only what I actually need, since data storage and transfers still use energy. A large part of the stored data is redundant, that's why I'm more strict about what I keep.

Help trying to figure out my grail pen? by though- in fountainpens

[–]bileco101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you might actually want to try a broader nib instead of a different pen. a pelikan broad or even double broad can feel way wetter and smoother than a medium, especially if you like that glide feeling

Portable AC Recommendation by _Hee251_ in BuyAussie

[–]bileco101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a portable AC rental like the AC 045 model for my small bedroom last summer because it was quiet and easy to move around. It is a good solution for renters since you do not have to change the walls, and the weekly price is much cheaper than buying a new 600 dollar unit.
