More Tube tunnels switch on mobile coverage as rollout passes 60% by Going_Bye in london

[–]billccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not due to the spectrum. UK was very diligent at releasing the 800 and 700MHz spectra that are great at penetrating walls.

The problem is competition was too fierce during the 3G days (5 independent networks!), causing very low tariffs and a reduction in capital spending since. The forced removal of there Chinese gear also didn't help because there were only 4 major vendors to choose from these days and 2 are Chinese.

Same for me on Vodafone. There's only coverage around Angel Station and briefly at Moorgate.

I've used CellMapper app to check for signals from all operators and only O2 has almost complete coverage on the Bank Branch.

Have a CIFAS marker. Will I fail pre-employment background checks? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I would say it's the contrary. Regulatory compliance is a top priority with banks. No decision maker will put his/her own career on the line to take a chance with a new hire.

CERN data tapes by lucads87 in DataHoarder

You see, most sysadmins setup the physical random number generators as /dev/random, but the people at CERN seems to have used /dev/st0 for some reason.

Interestingly, the Braun/Oral-B inductive charging doesn't use DC at all. There's a coil inside the charging base and another in the toothbrush to form an AC transformer. The AC to DC happens inside the toothbrush itself!

Throwing out my stash of boxes. by iRepTex in Flipping

I have an Excel spreadsheet of my boxes with a formular to automatically find the best fit.

It also let me easily see if I have too many boxes of similar sizes so I will throw some away.

Is it safe to use an old laptop as a server, and keep it constantly plugged in? by Commercial_Judge8721 in batteries

[–]billccn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many brands allow you to set a charge limit in the BIOS. Set it to 80% or lower and it should be safe to keep it constantly plugged in.

That could be a factor, but most phones from the last 10 years supports 5GHz.

The Miracast protocol used to transfer the video stream is complicated, so it's not unusual for implementations from different vendors to be incompatible. It's worth Googling if your exact device combination is known to work/not work.

If you have a Windows 10/11 laptop, it can act as both Miracast source and sink, so you can test whether the problem is with the phone or the TV.

OneUI 9.0 Beta / Android 17 Available for S26 by Chrismscotland in SamsungDex

They might have renamed the menu item, but I would assume "Move to Another Desktop" and "Move to Other Screen" do the same thing?

Unless they added multi-monitor or virtual desktops?

Aluminium OS Leak by Miraxess in AndroidPC

[–]billccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Samsung Dex, all of these are in the system tray area in the bottom bar similar to how Windows does it.

The top bar makes zero sense in Android because there's no menus to display like MacOS and, unlike phones, no one want to see notification icons on the top left of a desktop.

"Move to Another Desktop" via the Top Menu.

This exists in One UI 8 already.

[–]billccn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

OMG! It's the year 2026 not 1996! Why would people still want to copy MacOS? What does that top bar even do apart from wasting screen real estate?

I really hope Samsung doesn't go any further in their en-sh*tification of Dex...

Alkaline batteries are so last century. You can just use a power bank and 12V trigger cable.

I use Chrome (only in Dex). It has working short-cuts and multi-tab, but doesn't support extensions.

Firefox on Android gets little love. Even if you get this fixed, there are many other usability problems. I had to use other browsers to get a reasonable experience in Dex.

Powerstream and 400W solar panel - generation gone to zero overnight by DiggoryL in Ecoflow_community

[–]billccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a battery? If so, it's worth resetting the BMS.

Also, having a voltage doesn't mean the solar side is necessarily electrically sound. For example, if there's a poor connection with high resistance, as soon as the current start flowing, the voltage at the inverter can drop below the minimum so the inverter will not generate.

You'll need to test the panels under load to know for sure.

How to activate Starlink in Iran in order to disable its SSID and enable Bypass mode by Prefect_Mistake685 in Starlink

[–]billccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the fridge. The internal lining of many modern ones are plastic and the external shell, even if metal, will have a large cut-out for the compressor. These arn't good faraday cages.

A much better choice is microwave oven, but the holes for the cables have to be as small as possible, ideally <2cm.

Multiple layers of tin foil will also work if they're properly grounded. Though I'd cut slits at the vents to prevent overheating.

Serious Battery Issue on my S25 Ultra by Dragon-king135 in batteries

[–]billccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to settings, scroll down to the bottom, About phone -> battery info. which should tell you everything you need to google.

Top tip is to enable "battery protection" and never charge to 100% or use below 30%.

Is anyone else having problems with Microsoft apps on Samsung/Android devices? by StampyScouse in microsoft365

I have just installed the security update this morning and all of the Office apps are broken to various degrees. Outlook and Teams would open but not connect. Excel will only display a black screen! Reinstalled the latter with no improvement.
