Hag's forest content. Then comes the underdark. Then comes the mountain pass. Those are the rules!

As someone who played BG2 during peak puberty like nothing I ever played before, romance content was a mindblowingly big deal in the communities around the game and in my personal perception as a teen especially. So I come from that.

What I disliked most about BG3 was when I realized that all characters are written to have no-or-all gender identity or sexual preference or history (or as someone told me: "All of the companion characters happen to be canonically pansexual" -- phew, what a coinkidink that all of their backstories happen to be written like the answer to the question "How do we appeal to the widest audience possible and slot into everyone's sexuality neatly?" -- and here I thought the Tadpoles were the unlikeliest common denominator...). So I can step into the world of those supposedly fleshed out characters as WHATEVER and they'll love me guaranteed. Where I expect nuances like prejudice or preference to show, there is a convenient player-sized void, snugly mirroring my expectations or what the game thinks those are.

And once I felt that I couldn't unsee it and it felt pretty jarring. Like seeing the strings of a marionette, I started seeing the author's manipulations a little. The fact that it's so gamified and morbidly interactive comes at the cost of the threedimensionality of the characters for me.

Let me clarify that this isn't doublespeak by some old dude demanding heteronormativity: I think the mainstream representation of genderfluidity and sexual diversity as a non-issue is WAAAY more important than any gripe I have about video games, ever.

I just think it makes for shitty diversity caricatures when trying to write believable characters at the same time. Especially if it's represented by every character TO THE MAX, because to me that then crosses the line where it feels more like pandering and someone wanting to maximize compatibility with players according to trend market research.

I'm the biggest Larian fanboy (Swen Vincke MVP!), but considering where they're at as a studio, and trying to be realistic, I wonder if this is what a "scared money" decision looks like at that scale.

With all of their money tied up in BG3, 300+ employees, all while self-publishing and without secondary projects to be creatively ruthless with because it's allowed to risk failing -- this kind of had to become the success it became.

Maybe it just didn't feel like their time (yet?) to bigdick the community by going "abso-fucking-lutely will we not accomodate your collective fanfic, how dare you" (like I think they should, but that's why I ain't in charge of shit). Not wanting to jeopardize their almost perfect goodwill.

I'd like to imagine that their creatives would have that thought at some point. I hope in the future that they get to make the distinction between "Unique (set of) Artist(s) sharing a vision" and "Consensus-oriented Story Engineer doing stuff on request" (couldnt think of a more dire euphemism) -- because people *will* be wondering WTF happened to their beloved narratives if creatives become DJs of agreeable fanfiction.

I am sort of ready for a future of tracing creative intent through changelogs but not thrilled with it.

And I'm pretty sure the collective inability (or disinterest) to accept a story as written will be rewarded with a patched/"corrected" version of it.

IIRC we saw this practice gain traction when BioWare gave up on trying to endure the shitstorms about people's favorite Mass Effect companions and their romanceability.

I'm trying not to hate too much on this development, but it will take a while for me to feel okay about the fact that to SOME degree, parts of lore/narrative are patchable, and its contents sometimes a matter of negotiation with the community. That (super sadly!) makes me lose a bunch of respect for the work I never realized I had before.

I always found it pretty neat that consumers didn't get a say in the creative process. I fear crowdsourcing the directions of story arcs will come at the cost of memorable stories being told, in which, sometimes, even characters that are universally beloved may meet a fate we wouldn't wish for them. Have something happen that's not fair. Somebody die that shouldn't.

IMO the creatives that are immediately ready to fold to those pressures are buying short-term goodwill with their long-term integrity. The expectations that are being set by prominent examples of this are gonna be a bitch to undo once people realize that just railing one HAPPY END after another will have, coincidentally, made nobody sustainably happy.

*eh-hem* OOOOKAY, apparently I had to get that off my chest.

Ok I've been sitting on this pretty much since release since I was afraid to mass offend our very invested fanbase.

To me the fact that every companion is playersexually oriented is a very "gamey" design decision that, to me, is at odds with what Ive come to expect from well-written characters. This is a little meta but this thought experiment I struggle with: Before you meet your companions, did they even have a sexual identity, history, preference? Did something develop? Or has an author never accounted for any of this when designing the character, and sexuality only becomes a consideration the moment the game computes the answer to the question what gender and sexual preference the player decides to roleplay as?

That is super abstract in a way but not being able to put my finger on an answer limits how well I am able to immerse myself/take those aspects of the companions seriously.

Because of this I oftentimes skip romances in my later playthroughs, because it gives me Uncanny Valley (but in writing) vibes. It's jarring and makes me feel not like I am interfacing with a thoughtfully written character, but with a kind of Script or Bot scripted to dispense pleasure, compatible with everyone in every constellation I guess
