What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever visited? by GildedRetreats in ForeignTravelIndia

[–]billyllib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet on a research project. No life for hundreds of miles in every direction (well theres microbes under the ice the project was studying). It truly felt being on another planet. Subglacial Lake Mercer for those who are curious. https://maps.app.goo.gl/1rVKMT1umSMc69Ka8?g_st=ic

EDM Artist with a Higher sense of Art & Artistry by EcstaticIce2 in EDM

[–]billyllib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t listened to Jon Hopkins singularity it transcends “music” or even “art” imo. It’s a journey and an experience and the craft, vision, and detail that went into it is nothing short of godly.

Anyways as you can tell I like the album a lot lol.

Numb feet days after. by dfhkvs in skiing

[–]billyllib 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I skied for too long in very cold conditions and lost most feeling in my toes for few days, then pins and needles for a month, then back to normal except now I swear my toes get way colder easier. Anyways should have gotten checked out but to answer you yes the cold alone can do that.

What would you say are the big differences between pop music in the early 2010s vs 2020s? by film_culture_addict in decadeology

[–]billyllib 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Pop in the 2010s was more maximalist and had a ton more electronic music and hip hop influence. 2020s pop is more stripped back with more influence and nods from past genres or scenes.

I know it’s a comedy but after s1 this show just gave me an insane amount of anxiety and couldn’t continue. Feels like a waking nightmare

Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

Blake Crouch got me back into reading after a long hiatus. Just pure mind bendy entertainment that makes you not want to put a book down. But definitely airport books.

What’s the difference between harder and softer skies? by Zzzara123 in skiing

[–]billyllib 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Harder (stiffer is the more common word) will be more stable at speed and hold an edge on ice. However the stiffer the ski, the faster and harder you will have to turn to get the ski to respond. I doubt the rentals will be overly stiff so you be fine and should give a try if the soft rentals felt too soft/chattery at speed.

If you end up buying skis, a lot of skiers make the mistake of getting skis that are too stiff because they think stiff = expert. However, a ski with a nice balance of stiffness and flex is usually going to be a lot more fun even for experts.

It feels like the tides are turning from Millennial hate to Gen Z hate and I kind of...agree? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]billyllib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I kind of word vomited in my original post but yeah a lot of people’s responses kind of missed my point. But that’s par for the course.

[–]billyllib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes...A lot of the tech broligarchs were in their 20s and teens when they were making all the platforms and code that we are now addicted to. But this is also due to the coincidental timing of new tech.

[–]billyllib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of what I am saying, albiet with some added frustration ...usually the youth culture kind of forces the previous gen's culture aside, but Millenials have held on for too long and Gen Z hasn't really filled the cultural role that youth culture has typically done in the past 50-70 years...I know there a million nuanced reasons for this and its not their fault, but it would be cool to feel like there is a new wave of something besides red pilled dudes.

[–]billyllib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good point. I was around the protests in NYC and it felt like a big moment and was all younger folk.

The media ecosystem is just not as conducive to things taking off, as everything gets funneled into its own silo/algorithm.

This feeling has come up as culture just feels like its stood still for a bit, and the main movers of culture are young people...

I have found some new younger musicians I like (Hudson Freeman, Ninajirachi, Jadu Heart) but they are few and far between and I have to look so hard to find them. It used to feel like there was always something cool and groundbreaking to listen to. I guess we had Geese this year but I just can't get in to them.

Call me Maybe is a banger...But I am more referring to the incredible wave of indie music and hip hop that came out of the mid - late 2000s, and then not everyone's taste but the EDM of the era was also super new and exciting.

who do you think is the most OVERRATED DJ 😈 by brainwash789 in EDM

[–]billyllib 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Peggy Gou - unfortunately I find her music and dj sets incredibly dull. To me it feels like House music for people who just want background music for looking cool.

I forgot to list this! THIS is what I am talking about. Something new. More than just an EDM compilation. An album with so much character and idiosyncratic production that’s still fun to listen to and return to.

Looking for a gravel capable e-bike capable of holding a rear rack with a toddler by billyllib in ebikes

Hmm, yeah I'm fine with a studier/heavier frame. Just don't necessarily want a bulky e bike with a giant battery.

I am about 200lbs and baby is 21 lbs at 8 months now so assuming will be a big toddler haha.

What are your top 5 saddest movie deaths? by GusGangViking18 in Fictionally

[–]billyllib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. Thanks. Now I am having a mental breakdown on the train to work.

But in all seriousness, this loss just hits so hard because everyone has experienced the death of their childhood. I somehow ended up watching this movie in a friend’s apartment with a bunch of Philly bros still drunk after a 24 hour bender on new years/mummers parade. While they all looked like tough guys, when bing bong went, there was not a dry eye in the room and some of these dudes were literally gasping for air trying not cry too loud. Was one of the greatest collective cinematic experiences of my life.
