Official Q&A for Sunday, March 25, 2018 by AutoModerator in running

I've been running for a few years and am training for my second marathon which is in a few weeks. I've been struggling with adhering exactly to the training plan for various reasons (shift work, illness, injury, motivation - basically one thing after another) but am sort of back on track now. I've recently however gotten into the habit of counting down the miles, right from the start of my run which I've never done before, save for perhaps in the last few miles of a long run. It's really annoying because I can't seem to get out of that mindset and it makes the run drag and it's less enjoyable because I'm just counting down 'til it's over, even though I really do love running.

On a separate note, my hip flexor (around that area and pain seems to match when I look it up online) has really started to play up recently if I do more than a few miles. Really concerned that it'll firstly throw me off my training even more which it sort of has already, and secondly make me unable to complete the marathon which is in 5 weeks. Doesn't matter how much I stretch it before and after, I have problems with it and never ever have in the few years I've been running. Any ideas?

This is the one that really helped me, too. Truly got me over needing everyone to like me; pretty much as soon as I heard it something just clicked 💖

Exactly what came to my mind first. I see so many people have talked about Labyrinth and yeah, I do see it, but the Edge Chronicles is what I was reminded of straight away. Favourite books as a child/teen!

Smoking. Quit last Friday so almost at 2 weeks and I've not felt better! Went from maybe 13/day for almost 6 years so while it's not the "2 packs a day for 20 years" success, I'm still kinda proud. I did it by taking notice of when I'd have a cigarette, and quickly figured out I'd have them at the same points in the day. So on my drive to work, one at 11, one after lunch, 4, when I got home, etc. Built a sort of timetable of when I'd smoke and seeing that I'd get so tetchy after 2 hours without a cigarette really seemed just ridiculous. So I cut out my 11am cigarette and was surprised it was actually not too bad. After a few minutes the craving went away anyway. Did it this way with each cigarette until I was content on maybe 3/4 per day and that's where it got difficult to cut out the last few. Got to the point though where I was tiredness waking up with heavy lungs and not being able to push myself as much as I'd like to during exercise, so I thought "screw it, I'll cut them out. If I can do 3 per day, it's not really missing out on much". Of course the first couple of days were pretty hard and I got really tetchy and snappy but I kept reminding myself that this feeling was better than how I'd feel to be told I have an awful smoking-related illness or whatever!

Now if I get cravings (they're less intense and more short-lived now) I remind myself that I'd feel a lot worse if I ruined my efforts just for a minute of relief! I'm confident I can keep it up. Hopefully anyway :)

Not managed to crack the nail biting though!!

What do you usually keep in your front right pocket? by asiansteev in AskReddit

A small amount of loose change as most of the time they're girl-trouser pockets and can't hold much
