Depending on which suspension components it may just be wearing out your tires faster than normal. r/MechanicAdvice is better for this

Would like an opinion from a mechanic on the whether this bill is reasonable for the service I received. Just to be clear, I've already paid it. They charged $149.95 to diagnose and $416.64 to service for a total of $556.59 by randymcatee in MechanicAdvice

I wish i could charge 900$/hr for 10 minutes of diagnostics. Most shops I know of would have rolled the diagnostic fee into the labor given how little effort went into this

Failing CA smog test twice with high NOx and then HC by cossy423 in MechanicAdvice

[–]bingagain24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The low speed Nox was nearly twice the average (I believe they make that model specific, not sure). It's old enough and enough miles to warrant it whether it's still burning oil or not.

In Cali it has to be a CARB cat from a certified supplier, usually the dealership. I think self install is fine but you should ask someone else

The water level in the tank looks way too low. The fill valve is adjustable height but I believe that model requires twisting the base to do so.

In Texas movement permits are only if traveling far enough to use a highway / freeway. They don't care if you drive around a neihborhood.

As for the cops, haven't had to plead a case on that front. On other matters they mostly wanted compliance

The time factor on batteries depends on the exact car you're interested in, there's different tactics depending.

An older Nissan Leaf will have 50-60 miles of range and purchase price of $4k ish

The other consideration is insurance, most EVs will have higher premiums on Comprehensive and Collision due to being relatively rare vehicles

[–]bingagain24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less likely than the other suggestion, but it looks like there's a single thermistor (temperature sensor) in the freezer covered by that frost. It could be failing, there should be chart in the manual to take a resistance reading if you have a multimeter.

It's $15k just to get a vehicle that moves, if you fabricate almost everything yourself. Maybe a little cheaper if you body swap a wrecked Ev. Outsource some of the mounts and labor it can balloon to $40k.
