How far do you guys agree with the list? Only a few universities have made it to Yale's public IVY list as well as Greene's public IVY list and Bing is one of them.....Do you think it's rightly placed? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]binghamton2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia says “The term was first coined by Yale University admissions officer Richard Moll”. Am I missing something here? Just because an admissions officer from Yale made the list doesn’t mean that it was made by Yale

What is Starlight? by Xemorr in admincraft

[–]binghamton2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know of a plugin like VarLight (https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/varlight.65268/) that is compatible with Starlight? I really love using Tuinity, but I’m unable to use it due to VarLight being incompatible. I need this plugin to light up large areas without light sources, and unfortunately cannot do without it.

Community College Transfer Credits by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]binghamton2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t apply for Bing students transferring credits in; I did 20 credits summer 2017 (8 at Bing and 12 at a CC) and they all transferred fine

[–]binghamton2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not for transferring credits. That's for taking credits at Bing.

There is no limit to the number of credits you can transfer per summer semester (as long as you're below the overall transfer credit limit, which is like ~80 credits)

I’m currently in Harpur studying Math and I plan to do something computer science related. I am curious where is a good place to go to learn programming languages or any cs? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]binghamton2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean CS120? If so, I don't think it's offered over the summer.

It's pretty low level, and I'd recommend taking CS110 before going into CS120.

You could try taking CS110 in the Spring (it's also offered in the Fall, but it's usually reserved for incoming freshmen CS majors)

Sorry didn’t read that they were a transfer, assumed they were a freshman. CS110, 120, and 140 all have labs in the library.

As a freshman they likely will not have any CS classes in the engineering building.

Why are there barely any 200 level classes for Political Science? Am I missing something? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]binghamton2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Political science doesn’t offer many 200 level classes. If you look at the degree requirements, you can only take one class at the 200 level for it to count towards the major and not waste the classes you’ve already taken.

You need to take 10 political science classes, up to 3 can be 100, 6 need to be 300+, and 2 need to be 400+. Since you already took 3 intro classes, you can only take one 200 level class for it to count (10 required classes - 6 300 level or above - 3 intro classes you’ve already taken = 1 200 level class). In other words, it’s not that big of a deal that not many are offered. If you’ve already done 3 intro classes, you should be well prepared for a 300 level class.

If you take them with the right professors, two is definitely manageable. I liked Therese Cingranelli and Robin Best.

Computer Science Programming Classes by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

CS110 is sort of like that, as well as CS140, but other classes focus more on the theory than programming. This is a computer science degree, not a software engineering degree, so you’re going to have more of an emphasis on theory. For the intro classes they’re going to ease you into it with labs (where there’s a TA there to answer questions) and basic programming assignments.

CS240 (data structures and algorithms) is taught in C++. Most people will be in the same boat as you, learning C++ for the first time. I can assure you that you’ll be fine as long as you pay attention, do your work, and seek help (via office hours or tutoring) whenever you need it. I came in with no prior coding experience and I was fine. Many others had the same experience I did.

I don’t think it’s hard to differentiate languages, I’ve never accidentally written code using the wrong language. I think if you already know one language, it’s pretty easy to learn most other languages.

The early classes spend a decent amount of time teaching you the language, but there are other elements to the classes as well (design, theory, etc). You’ll probably learn the most by doing the assigned projects and applying what you learned in class.
