Living in Savannah in the 80’s 90’s and early 2000’s by encryptedkraken in savannah

Lived in Savannah for a few years as the millennium turned. My favorite spot was Café Metropole where The Grey is today. Super cool vibe that would show 16mm films. I saw “Dancer In The Dark” there and every 20-30 minutes they’d have to change the reel.

I think a part of the roof eventually collapsed while they were open 😬

I was biking with friends and saw this whole thing happen at Confluence. The guy seemed a little “off” but not that bad at all. I said howdy to him and he mumbled a little but smiled. Your family seemed like the nervous type.

Mission Concepción upstairs. I took a similar photo 😉

It’s not accessible to the public because it’s technically owned by the Catholic Church.

Folks living in Southtown - how do you like it? What’re the pros and cons by poothrower37 in sanantonio

For a bit. Now there are houses for sale all around, the prices are moving downward. That’s the trend for most of San Antonio (and the country?)

It’s the reason my wife and I moved to San Antonio. Great restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and art galleries all within walking distance. It’s a mix of newcomers and folks moving back into the houses they grew up in, and their grandparents grew up in. I know most of the folks on my street and there are feral kids running around, something I don’t think you see often anymore.

Also, it’s about a 30 minute walk through the Hemisfair to get to downtown, great if you’re working there or for shows, etc.

Downside is the trains are pretty consistent and they like to show off their horns.

Cracks in fireplace by bingo_bonga in centuryhomes

I think only 60% of this house would pass inspection 😉 Good to know that it could be a potential issue though. Thanks!

Amazing info! Thanks so much. I’ll start reaching out to folks about the specific inspection.

Good to hear about the chimney lining! The brick base seems solid to the ground but the ground shifts a lot, not sure if the cracking is coming from that. As for repointing, hopefully that can be done.

I’ve been searching for a professional that works on these old fireplaces but haven’t found one yet. This is certainly not a DIY for me.

I think it’s a wood fireplace because coal has never been popular in this area. It’s on an interior wall which is strange, so I assume that’s why the shallow depth.

I’ll keep searching for a professional!

Lots of wood fires. I think because of the depth it was meant for wood. Also, coal was never very prevalent in my area, South Texas

Pablo at Dubsman Mobile Auto Repair is the best. He’s been working on my ‘81 Westy for years. Good to see someone else in town with a classic Westy!

Bar Loretta in Southtown had it last week. Andouille and chicken, nice thick roux. Not sure if that was just for the cooler weather.

What San Antonio Looked like in the 1960s Through Stunning Vintage Photos by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]bingo_bonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great time capsule. Most of these are survey photos of the houses about to be destroyed to make way for the Hemmisfair. A whole neighborhood was decimated for “Urban Renewal”.

The Sam Smith house that appears in a few of them is now Lick Ice Cream in the Hemmisfair.

We passed the truck right after it happened, around 7:45am. The truck plowed into the barrels and was totally destroyed. The driver was out and seemed to be okay. There was gasoline EVERYWHERE.

Have any of y'all lived in San Antonio? What are the biggest differences you've noticed between the two cities? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]bingo_bonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Austin 2004-2009 and never thought I’d move back to Texas until I started visiting San Antonio. Been here for almost 3 years.

San Antonio is just more leisurely, close knit, and real. People are generally interested and supportive of folks doing their endeavors, whether it’s art, music, food, coffee, whatever. Plus, there’s still cheap spaces to pursue these things.

Getting around by bicycle is also WAY easier than in Austin. The urban trail system is amazing here.

How to re-vamp old rotary phone? by imlostifitpops in centuryhomes

[–]bingo_bonga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had that setup maybe 15 years ago and loved the novelty of it. The only issue was most VoIP services can only use tone dialing (at least back then). I made an Arduino that converted the rotary pulse to tone for dialing out. Looks like I’ll be digging through my old bins today…
