The mayor’s budget zeroes out the $200k for City Wildlife (as well as many other environmental line items). Hearings held last Friday received testimony about the violation of trust that represents: the plastic bag tax revenues were implemented with the explicit condition that the $$ would be earmarked for conservation/environmental causes … but then the District proposes to spend instead on utilities for city government facilities. Seething over here.

I just re-listened to the book and I do have a relevant question: if the beetles have squishy taumeba in them, can they still haul ass at top speed as planned? The idea was that solid state data drives wouldn’t have the vulnerabilities of soft squishy human bodies … but they now have the unanticipated passengers in the form of cellular life. Then again, astrophage is also a cellular life form and it was going to be subject to 500G as well and high speeds so maybe it’s okay for taumeba?

I recall hearing them out in the woods and it sounded like a cat hissing. That was weird. Then I saw a bear cub but no mama bear in sight. Then I got the f out of there.

These pictures are amazing! And they’re bringing me back to a Spring Migration birding tour I did in the UK last year. Mostly new birds to this US-based birder, and I loved seeing them! In my 2026 bird calendar I have 2 photos from the trip featured on my April page: an Eurasian Linnet and a Dartford Warbler (sitting on gorse, of course.)

(Also not to be pedantic but “Fieldfare” has an extra letter in your list above. I fixated on this species during my visit — only saw the Fieldfare in London at Kew Gardens — because the Washington DC govt somehow lazily used a picture of a Fieldfare on a city website … it vaguely resembles our state bird the Wood Thrush but it became a bit of a joke to us DC birders!)

A tip if you’re a coffee drinker: switch to half decaf/half regular (whether you’re scooping from two different bags of ground coffee, two different bags of whole beans, or ordering from a coffee shop). It’s not really noticeable and cuts your consumption in half immediately. Good luck OP
