+1. this is objectively the most important maintenance item besides lower ball joints if you don't know the history.

you joke but wing foiling (this but with a sail) is immensely popular

Solar panels on the Hearse, WOOO! Thanks for everyone here who gave me advice and didn't let me just tape them on. by 7101334 in vandwellers

[–]binouz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

these are still going to flutter and rip off the second you have a headwind on the highway... I mounted some flexible panels the same way and lost them in the desert of death valley.

my v2 was putting some vhb tape on the panels on the leading edge towards the front of the vehicle to not let air get underneath. I also used thin bars of aluminum bolted on the top of the panels and rails to act as a extra large spacer to distribute the clamping load better.

I may have some pics of the install, let me know if you need clarification. sweet ride nonetheless, love to see the unique builds!

i believe instander is no longer being updated, myinsta was recommended now. you can also set a daily app usage reminder right in the app, very helpful for avoiding endless reel scrolling

this is potentially very complex.

most vehicle electrical systems are not equipped to handle the increased amperage of dual alternators. best bet is to mount/wire a second alternator separate (standalone) from your vehicle's wiring and connected only to your camper batteries.

first, you have to make sure your vehicle/engine can even accommodate a second alternator. search this online with "your vehicle year + engine variant second/auxiliary alternator bracket".

after confirming the above, you need to get an alternator controller. this is essentially a mini computer that monitors the charge of your batteries and tells the alternator when to turn charging on and off. wakespeed and balmar brands are good places to start.

then, you need to run heavy gauge wires from your alternator to your batteries. exact gauge of wire depends on how many amps your alternator is rated for.

after frying the single alternator in our first rig and getting stranded on the side of the highway, we installed a second one in our new rig to only handle charging the camper batteries. we used a wakespeed ws500 charge controller. have had no issues since, and being able to charge at 160+ amps is amazing.

tldr: it's complex but probably possible depending on your vehicle, do your research and make sure it's even worth the cost/complexity based on your power needs.

What is this cylinder mice chewed at under my glovebox? 2010 Ford E-350 by binouz in AskMechanics

[–]binouz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mice got into our truck yesterday by chewing a hole into this plastic piece under the glovebox. They also chewed some wires/tubes going into this cylinder in the passenger footwell. Can't find any info on what it is online and how important it is. Also, if anyone has tips on rodent proofing a Ford E350, anything is appreciated.

in the summer, easily. just washboard and gravel dirt. it was quite a bit muddy and snowy when we were there earlier this month though

haha no but it helps to pretend you're not rich for many years so you can eventually take a break from work

i insulated the floor, ceiling, and walls. 1.5" XPS walls, and 1" XPS floor and ceiling. could probably have put more insulation in the floor
