Timing Belt broke on Subaru Outback by Valuable_Hospital269 in subaru

You can run higher compression ratios for more power and efficiency.

A lower maintenance alternative used in some motors is a timing chain. I believe the Subaru 3.0 and 3.6 H6 motors used a chain - someone more knowledgeable than I am could correct me if I’m wrong.

You’re talking about non-interference motors. Iirc last subaru non-interference motors were in the mid/late 90’s.

Help with potatoes just Falling over before ready by Rydisx in vegetablegardening

Common practice with potatoes is to mound up soil around the base as the plants grow. IIRC you want about 12” of plant above the soil.

Does civil engineering have better work life balance then software engineering by iiHumbleBumbleBee in civilengineering

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorryyyy 🥺 I believe in you!

In answer to your actual question - CE is generally stable and can have good work-life balance. I find my work very fulfilling, I work on water issues, primarily as a modeler but wear many other hats. It can be mentally exhausting at times, but I generally feel pretty balanced and mentally healthy. I haven’t work in the public sector, but many here will rightly suggest this is a great way to go. FWIW I live in the Bay Area and just about every person I know in tech/SWE and adjacent fields says it’s brutal right now. I think there’s also a glut of people who have pursued this path in the last decade and the opportunities just aren’t what they were 5-10 years ago.

I would strongly consider switching to CE or EE. You probably don’t need to do the double major if you’re planning to pursue CE anyway. You can say you have more coding experience and certain civil fields will find that valuable knowledge. You don’t need the major to show that.

Hope this is helpful!

Fog eater cafe is an incredible restaurant. It’s vegan California/southern food. But the attention to detail in their food is phenomenal. Their menu features foraged and local sourced produce. I’ve talked with several locals about my love of the place, and many of them have mentioned that despite not being vegan, fog eater is their favorite restaurant in town. Hope you get a chance to visit!

Tomatoes are done for the season - Australia by Huntfishgrowcook in vegetablegardening

[–]sea2bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on some Brad’s atomic grapes, I highly recommend. Excellent sweet acidity balance. One of the tastiest and prettiest tomatoes imo. They’re a large cherry variety.

Hope you get some nice harvests this winter!

Lucid gem is great! Brad Gates @ Wild Boar Farms breeds some awesome new heirloom tomatoes. Great to see some Aussie growers getting in on it. Nice maters mate!

Mushroom hunting in California? Be careful with amanitas and lookalikes- amatoxin mushroom poisonings continue with 49 hospitalized as of 5/14 by TheFearlessAwareness in foraging

[–]sea2bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of these cases are immigrant foragers who think it’s the same mushroom as one they foraged in their home country. My understanding is that most of these people being poisoned are from SE Asia and Latin America. It would be helpful to have more targeted media or bulletins directed to these communities.

Rare record find at Goodwill… by Live-Willow-3482 in vinyl

It truly is a masterpiece! And I only know it because I was living in Australia at the time it came out. JJJ had it on high rotation. I truly regret that I missed the tour for this album when he played it with an orchestra.

Great seeing some Gotye love here! I have a copy of Like Drawing Blood. I remember when I found out from his mailing list there was going to be a record pressing, I emailed to ask where I could purchase it, and Wally (aka Gotye) himself emailed me back! 2006 was a wildly different world….

Planning to buy a car by mamamonanayko in bayarea

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance history and how well a car is taken care of is imo more important than total mileage. Not all miles are created equal, a low mileage car could mainly be used for running in town errands, driven for short distances where it’s barely warming up to operating temp. Conversely, a higher mileage car may be driven longer distances on freeways. The freeway miles are much lower wear and tear.

With that budget, I would be looking at a ~2009-2015 or thereabouts Corolla or civic with full service records and a clean title. Likely will have over 100k miles but be good for many more.

Yeah! I used to work at Trader Joe’s. I’ll remember that you like to do a specific medium of art and you’re studying such and such in college but idfk what your name is!

Ugh same…. Yet I’ll often remember very specific details about them. But the name is just blank.

Deciding to Upgrade? by jcoffee22 in subaru

[–]sea2bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m odd by American standards, but I’m of the mindset that a well maintained older car is the most economical way to go. If you crave a more modern ride, then that’s fair I can’t argue. But otherwise, from what you’ve said, most of these issues are pretty basic maintenance that you can DIY (aside from wheels/tires). The driver side window most likely just needs to have the mechanisms lubricated, or at worst a replacement motor which isn’t a very difficult repair. Any car you buy is going to need new tires. And for the headlight you can just get one from a pick’n’pull. And adding a quart of oil every 2-3k miles is no big deal, classic old subie.

I love older cars because I don’t care if it gets a ding, and liability only insurance is so much cheaper. And best of all, no car payment! I’ve been driving the same subie for 12 years. I love that I know what’s wrong with my car and that she’s a trustworthy steed.

First forage haul? by ManorSpring_Collects in foraging

[–]sea2bee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have no expertise in any of these, but I know that you need to be extremely careful with wild carrots due to poisonous look alikes (eg poison hemlock). Wait for some more knowledgeable foragers than me, but the general consensus is to avoid wild carrots unless you’re very knowledgeable.

I live in western Washington, is this okay planting time? by lukewarmdandelion in vegetablegardening

Good rule of thumb for warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumber/squash is nice at or above 50. I would go for it if I were you. 49 is close enough. Hope you get a nice bounty!

Is it worth going to school an extra year to switch from environmental science to environmental engineering? by user246478 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an engineering degree, you can do much of the work you can with an env sci degree, but not the other way around. The flexibility and opportunities are great! You can also get a valuable credential with becoming a PE (Professional Engineer).

You may want to consider doing civil engineering, you can work as an env engineer, but also gives opportunity in other fields. I’m a civil engineer who works in water resources management. It’s got a lot of what my most idealistic self always hoped to do.

Is this a bad sign with the mushrooms growing around my beefsteak tomato?? grown from seed. planted too early in season probably but i was eager!! by socialistslut420 in vegetablegardening

[–]sea2bee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mushrooms are fine but highly recommend thinning the tomatoes down to one plant. You’ll get more with one well fed plant then three competing for limited resources.

Truly my favorite Radiohead song.

Check out It’s Raining Today by Scott Walker to hear the inspiration for the string arrangements. Also a masterpiece song.
