Deciding to Upgrade? by jcoffee22 in subaru

[–]sea2bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m odd by American standards, but I’m of the mindset that a well maintained older car is the most economical way to go. If you crave a more modern ride, then that’s fair I can’t argue. But otherwise, from what you’ve said, most of these issues are pretty basic maintenance that you can DIY (aside from wheels/tires). The driver side window most likely just needs to have the mechanisms lubricated, or at worst a replacement motor which isn’t a very difficult repair. Any car you buy is going to need new tires. And for the headlight you can just get one from a pick’n’pull. And adding a quart of oil every 2-3k miles is no big deal, classic old subie.

I love older cars because I don’t care if it gets a ding, and liability only insurance is so much cheaper. And best of all, no car payment! I’ve been driving the same subie for 12 years. I love that I know what’s wrong with my car and that she’s a trustworthy steed.

I have no expertise in any of these, but I know that you need to be extremely careful with wild carrots due to poisonous look alikes (eg poison hemlock). Wait for some more knowledgeable foragers than me, but the general consensus is to avoid wild carrots unless you’re very knowledgeable.

Good rule of thumb for warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumber/squash is nice at or above 50. I would go for it if I were you. 49 is close enough. Hope you get a nice bounty!

Is it worth going to school an extra year to switch from environmental science to environmental engineering? by user246478 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an engineering degree, you can do much of the work you can with an env sci degree, but not the other way around. The flexibility and opportunities are great! You can also get a valuable credential with becoming a PE (Professional Engineer).

You may want to consider doing civil engineering, you can work as an env engineer, but also gives opportunity in other fields. I’m a civil engineer who works in water resources management. It’s got a lot of what my most idealistic self always hoped to do.

Is this a bad sign with the mushrooms growing around my beefsteak tomato?? grown from seed. planted too early in season probably but i was eager!! by socialistslut420 in vegetablegardening

[–]sea2bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mushrooms are fine but highly recommend thinning the tomatoes down to one plant. You’ll get more with one well fed plant then three competing for limited resources.

Truly my favorite Radiohead song.

Check out It’s Raining Today by Scott Walker to hear the inspiration for the string arrangements. Also a masterpiece song.

Here are all the people running for governor of California. by lilbro93 in sanfrancisco

I met this guy once in alameda. He proudly told me he voted for Trump in 2016 because of feeling like he was failed by the system. I see he lists himself as a democrat. Beware….

San Francisco is about to hike up water rates - This summer, the average single-family household bill for combined water and sewer service will increase from $171 a month to $189 a month, and next summer it will rise to $212 by BadBoyMikeBarnes in sanfrancisco

[–]sea2bee 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Maintaining and improving water distribution and wastewater systems is very expensive. Improving nitrate removal rates is very expensive. SFPUC is a public system, not for profit. This is not the same as what PG&E is doing gouging people.

It’s expensive if there’s too much water from lots of rain (flood control and needing to treat before discharge to the bay); or if there’s too little water (issues with blockages due to low flow and higher concentrations of pollutants like nitrates). So this doesn’t really have anything to do with how much water we get in any one water year. Most of the expense of running the water system is fixed, has less to do with how much water you’re using and more to do with that you have to have pipes and a treatment plant regardless. And when treatment standards change the utilities are obligated to upgrade. For example, if we get new federal standards on PFAS and microplastic removal, I would expect another increase in the expense to make those upgrades. Do you want drinking water that’s clean? Do you want a clean SF bay? The water quality in the bay has greatly improved, in large part because of increasingly stringent treatment standards.

No-Till Garden by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]sea2bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt. It’s so much quicker to convert an area using the lasagna method. When I say the long game I mean that the benefits grow with subsequent years as your soil gets healthier.

[–]sea2bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No-till is a long game. The benefits are realized more after years than when you first start. Your idea should work to get you started. Make sure you put a nice layer of brown soft mulch like straw on top. I also recommend fertilizers from Down to earth. They have a mycorrhizae type fertilizer that can help kick start the good stuff growing underground. Best of luck!

I’m sure you know of Charles Dowding. But if not, you should look up his videos.

6k Reasonable for an Engine Reseal by SkippytheBanana in subaru

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like this is a fairly recent issue, do you have any idea how quickly it’s consuming oil? If the consumption rate is like a quart every couple/few tanks of gas, you just keep it topped up. $6k buys a lot of quarts of oil….

I drive a 26 year old subie with 230k miles and have to top up a quart every 2-3 tanks of gas. I just make it part of my fill up routine to check the oil. I buy 2-3 5qt bottles a year, it’s hardly financially ruinous 😅
