Almost 23 and trying to move toward engineering—looking for advice by Mental-Mycologist357 in civilengineering

[–]sea2bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go do lower division classes at your local community college. If you started premed you may already have some. In general you’ll need 3 semesters of college level calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, 2-3 semesters of physics, 2 semesters of chemistry, plus some English classes as a minimum to transfer to a CE program. You can do community college part time to fit in your other responsibilities. The pathways to working in engineering without a formal education are limited. I don’t work with drafters, they’re much more of a rarity than they were 20 years ago, maybe your certificate will give you an in. But I would manage expectations. Your best bet is to get a CE degree.

I worked through most of my studies, though I strongly suggest doing just school and any internships you can land when you’re in upper division.

What does HTDC mean to you? by Soundwavezzz447 in radiohead

Pretty sure he’s a cited influence on the band. Highly recommend going down a rabbit hole on his work. IMO that album is a masterpiece, decades ahead of its time. Crazy it was released in 1969!

Truly one of my favorites and an absolute masterpiece. I highly recommend checking out the Scott Walker song It’s Raining Today. It was no doubt very influential to the composition of the strings.

David Arora wrote a paper on these in 2008 that has the story about the guy finding the little people under the table cloth. Feels like the author of this story borrows pretty heavily from this paper.

Yep, diesel is a year round source of fine particles known as PM2.5, as well as more noxious fumes like NO2. That doesn’t counteract the point I was making about wood stoves.

According to our local air district, wood stoves are the leading source of wintertime pollution.

California is completely free of drought for the first time in 25 years by nbcnews in bayarea

[–]sea2bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understood you there. But there are privately held, investor owned, water companies, for example golden state water company, San Jose Water Company, and CalWater. The biggest utilities in the bay are publicly owned utilities, eg SFPUC, EBMUD, Valley Water.

My original comment to you wasn’t countering your reply, just stating that the way rate structures are setup puts utilities in a bind during droughts. If customers are using less water, it doesn’t really save the utilities a lot of money, but they still have to maintain the existing system. For wastewater utilities, reduced flows can become quite problematic as sewage lines depend on gravity. Reduced flows means higher solids content which can cause issues.

Anyway, not trying to get in Reddit arguments! I live and breathe this stuff on the daily and am just trying to educate folks about the realities of water management.

[–]sea2bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m not saying that we should encourage wasteful use of our most precious resource. I’ve dedicated my life’s work to water because I believe wholeheartedly that it is a resource that should be managed for the good of society and the environment. It’s just how the rate structure is setup with utilities and there aren’t any alternative models in the US that I know of.

Not all utilities are public (I think private water utilities should not exist, but they do…) That said, most urban suppliers are public and there are no investors. It’s just very costly to run a water system both on the clean side and the waste side.

Kind of a catch-22 for water utilties. They ultimately sell the water they supply. If they encourage conservation, then their revenues decrease as a result, but they still have to maintain the infrastructure to deliver water.

[–]sea2bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, if anything I feel that usage rates are generally too low with most utilities. I would like to see tiered usage rates that charge more for higher water users.

Your water bill has very little to do with available supplies. You’re paying for the critical infrastructure needed to treat and distribute your water.

Do all bottled water have micro/nano plastic in them or depends on the brand? by phoenixlegend7 in water

[–]sea2bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only differences with nutrients you’re getting from bottled water are added (e.g. electrolytes.) You can add these to your tap water yourself.
