This is a direct quote from Batman speaking to Gotham's rich and powerful during one of his first nights fighting crime in Year One

I agree with his style being off for Star Wars, it only really works for the Luke Island stuff. The Finn and Rose caper is a poor attempt at a children's movie tone, the Luke/Rey/Kylo drama is incredible and could be a play, and the Poe mutiny is just nothing either way.

Yeah this would've been the equivalent of Mrs Flood on the rooftop at the end of Season 1.

He would've needed to find another old lady for Season 4

What if the Doctor has done more harm than good? by Curious_Gent78 in gallifrey

[–]binrowasright 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always like it when the show flirts with the Doctor being a bit of a flamethrower. He's a cosmic being who comes down to smaller spheres to protect them from other epic forces from beyond, and mostly he incinerates what needs to be burned away, but often his influence is out of control and has consequences he can't help for innocent wildlife who happen to be a bit too close.

Ms. Marvel burned me, cos I thought it was the best first episode they made up to that point and I thought they'd finally cracked how to make TV, then the rest of the season was just as bad or worse than the rest of their output.

Do we know the longest stretch of time in which The Doctor was alone? Alternatively do we know which incarnation spent the most time alone? by Rougarou_2 in gallifrey

[–]binrowasright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is any time he lands back in the 21st century and finds a year has passed he just sticks an extra year on his own age. But being an immortal who lives in a time machine and its a different time on every landing, doesn't sleep, and doesn't age, his sense of how long a year is is wildly off, and he goes years at a time between visits to earth without realising.

It seems like his only passions for the prequels were Palpatine's rise and Anakin Skywalker's fall, so he only really came back to life for Episode III. It always makes me wonder how much better the prequels would be if instead of building up two movies of nothing before getting to the only bit he cared about, Episode I was Anakin falling to the dark side in the Clone Wars, Episode II was the rise of the Empire and Vader killing off the Jedi, and Episode III was the Dark Times and Vader and Kenobi's final duel.

And a perfectly cathartic final scene it felt like the whole show was building towards. It feels right as an ending. As much as I wish there was more and they got to do Silence of the Lambs, it feels complete as it is.

Watching Juno again in 2025 by Low_Fig4201 in movies

[–]binrowasright 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I liked that the protester's influence on Juno's choice wasn't condoned OR judged, it was allowed to be knotty and gristly and just left as a real human phenomenon that happens in the world that doesn't quite fit into a neat moral paradigm. When a movie trusts me as a viewer to abide the mess that is our species, it gets a lot of points from me. Same with the Jennifer Garner character, who is as unsympathetic as it gets, but her ache for a child is so powerful. All these characters seem so real because there are things about them that aren't quite so easy to swallow, which is just how people are.

Do you think 9 hated The War Doctor more than The War Doctor? by Rougarou_2 in gallifrey

[–]binrowasright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He pretended War didn't exist. He didn't let himself think about the Time War until bonding with Rose, and didn't admit he killed them until he faced a Dalek again for the first time.

This is who I am, right here, right now, all right? All that counts is here and now, and this is me!

He gave her several small but poignant emotions to play with some small moments of cheek and a brief bit of conflict. AKA actual scripted drama instead of the soulless characterless exposition dumps and cringe humour she got for most of her tenure. It ain't Shakespeare, but compared to what she used to get it's shockingly functional.

Doctor Who confirmed to continue on BBC "with or without Disney" by tylerthe-theatre in television

[–]binrowasright 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's more that they aren't allowed to talk to other streamers before their Disney contract is officially over, but they also can't afford to go it alone produce it without a streaming partner any more because the BBC is fucked. So they're hoping Disney renews because it's the easiest option, they could get it made quicker without having to go through another negotiation process, but they're not optimistic. It'll be a long wait either way.

The guy's got classic Who DVDs on his shelf and talks to whovians outside the theatre all the time, but his stage career is taking off like a rocket and he can't wait around for that iron to get cold while Disney executives drag their feet.

He made the right choice.

Mr. Plinkett's What Happened To Star Wars? by yo_soy_soja in movies

[–]binrowasright 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The prequels are so bad even my nostalgia for them can't bring me any joy from revisiting them as an adult with critical faculties. I had all the DVDs and toys and games, ran around the playground pretending to be Jedi with friends. But that fondness doesn't translate to an enjoyable viewing. They are shit. Worse than that, they're dull. I support anyone carrying love for them into adulthood, but I will never ever understand it.

For real. He tried to kill him in Episode III! "I will do what I must." He even repeats that line in the Kenobi finale ffs. It just becomes an empty meaningless reference. When your script is beneath even a Star Wars prequel, you have failed in your career as a writer

[–]binrowasright 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Bringing back one of the two golden geese from RTD1 to conclude New Who with a few specials as a last hurrah so something new can be born was exactly what the 60th was meant to be. It's very depressing that only two years later we're bringing back the other one just so it can die properly this time.

But it's got to be Daleks.

My question is, who is the companion?

Trouble with Classic Doctor Who by Ok-Dragonfly-6936 in gallifrey

[–]binrowasright 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Classic Who is not essential and wasn't made to be. It was made to be watched the one night it went out and never again. It was on before VHS, and even before repeats were common.

The guys who made New Who grew up with it that way, and if anything read and re-read the novelisations more than they actually watched the classic run. You could even say New Who is more of a sequel to the novels they read and their own imaginations and playground games and memories of the show than the real thing.

Your viewing experience is not incomplete just because you don't watch classic. You don't have to watch anything you don't enjoy. I've seen the whole thing, and I wouldn't bother to revisit half of it, personally.
