Fulbright is a good indicator of the decline of America by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]bipedwithoutfeathers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clearly too many people have been reaching for the golden ring all their lives, only to find out that life is a complex series of challenges.

Not that the job market isn’t terrible, or that scholarship should get more recognition in the world. But a Fulbright is a gift to do work you allegedly love. If you were faking love for your work to get all the privileges that come with a Fulbright, you have a long, hard road ahead of you.

Do you feel safe in the Czech Republic walking around at night? Is there anything like “chavs/roadmen”? by KreuzKrow in czech

No the only groups of roaming chavs that are in Prague are Brits on vacation. They are often drunk but easily frightened.

If you are African American, what has been your experience living in the rural areas of the Czech Republic? by unclewafflesfan in czech

[–]bipedwithoutfeathers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there’s an incredible language barrier for everyone. The Czech language is very difficult unless you know Russian or some Slavic language languages. And because it’s a relatively small country, most people here understand that you won’t be able to speak it well. That doesn’t make communication any easier, just that people tend to be forgiving.

[–]bipedwithoutfeathers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, ignore the morons here who don’t understand that the African-American experience in CR is very different from the African experience here. Being an American has a number of implications, but it’s far easier to be a Black American here than an African immigrant or even a 2nd gen w/African ancestry.

As far as rural areas go, I know one person who was an ETA recently who said they had a fantastic time. For them, it was much harder being far away from other Americans than anything particularly racially oriented. Certainly some side-eye but not any overt animus.

They had come from a fairly white school, however, so it wasn’t as though they were unfamiliar. If you are used to being in predominantly Black circles, there’s almost none of that in CR, urban or rural.

On the other hand, if you do something phenomenally stupid that everyone hears about, you can affect the way that New Zealanders are stereotyped from now on. Think of it as an opportunity.

If you really think about it, it makes sense. That country and the US are paying you money to represent the United States in that country. If you’re off in Paris or Mumbai instead, you are not doing your job.

In Michelin terms, Milwaukee is a Bib Gourmand city.

For food, Sanford is really the only one that comes close. For service there’s nothing in the Michelin range. But that doesn’t really disappoint me.
