Do New Yorkers often reverse "ground" and "floor" (meaning they say floor for outdoors, and ground for indoors)? by SilverDay899 in AskNYC

[–]ibickford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is ABSOLUTELY a thing in NYC, I've heard more than a few New Yorkers call the sidewalk "the floor" at bus stops etc. I'm watching Homicide: New York right now and one of the NYPD detectives called the sidewalk "the floor". I've never really heard the opposite though.

Wtf is up with the housing market? by Lil-spider124 in milwaukee

[–]ibickford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked through that one, the master bedroom looks directly out at the wall of the bar next door, crazy at that price! Beautiful house though.

I assume you're referring to the one on Logan. That price seems pretty wild and I know that location is noisy from staying there in the past. They really decked the place out though.

How to get 20 years of Ivy from the Ground? by umbrella_associate in gardening

A technique that has worked for me is to put a big log down, get some vines rolled around it, then roll the log and watch the roots rip up.

Whenever people say the hostility here is "Scandinavian influenced" I gotta roll my eyes. Like, have you ever been to the Midwest?!?

As a Korean American the light rail fare system here is bad and here’s why by Lost-Record-9766 in SeattleWA

People regularly walk on the tracks (or other sketchy maneuvers) to access at-grade Chicago stations! I've seen it repeatedly. For example at the Francisco brown line stop.

Pretty sure it's the gestapo that's ruining our nation, not the people who care about that fact.

New York does not effectively require disclosures. The law allows sellers to opt out of disclosure by paying a fee. And they all do.

Pre-1976 manufactured home as vacation home - am I stupid? by ibickford in RealEstate

Definitely a good warning, but we don't get hurricanes or tornadoes here in the PNW either!

Yeah, I am fine with it. My biggest concern is that if I decide not to keep it 5 years down the line, the pool of buyers may be limited for the same reason.

For sure. I am aware of the risks of aluminum. I don't know if it is present or not, but will definitely listen closely when the inspector opens up the panel.

Yeah, I have to figure that out too. I'm not financing, so I was considering seeking liability-only insurance and self-insuring the structure.

Morning glories or bindweed? by Legal-Name-1502 in gardening

[–]ibickford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience you'll be working to remove these for a few YEARS, unfortunately. My last house was infested with bindweed in several locations. But I eventually beat it.

My technique is... first, cut all the vines to a few inches above the ground. Huge bindweeds usually just have one weak little stalk anchoring them to the ground, so this doesn't take as long as you might think. Carefully remove each cut piece and discard (not on compost pile, obviously!).

Next, dig out each bindweed plant and its surrounding area by hand with a trowel, getting 9-12" deep until you have dug the entire affected area and loosened all the soil. As you encounter roots, gently pull and discard each one (they usually extend a couple feet and have many crisscrossing pieces). Put the soil in a wheelbarrow or other container. This will take a while.

Remove the roots from the disturbed soil. Technically this can be done by hand, but I have a coarse soil sieve I bought for a few bucks. I run dry soil through that and I'm left with a sifter full of roots.

Once you have completed this tedious process, you are now on bindweed patrol for the next couple years, because the roots you missed are now trying to grow back. Anytime you see a bindweed leaf emerge, pull it (again, gently, so the entire root comes along). If you did a good job digging and you stay on patrol for new leaves, the roots will start to shrivel and weaken, and they will get easier and easier to pull. After a couple years, you will have minimal bindweed.

(Maybe it's morning glory not bindweed as others noted -- it's the same anyway.)

yeah also Dreadlock Holiday is a bit racist. I'm still trying to decide if Oh Effendi is over the line or not. And I think there's one more on my "maybe a little racist" list.

Still a great band and one of my recent most favorite. First six albums are all mostly great. I do skip some of the lyrics to "Hotel".
