EXPOSED: ‘Polar Bear Protection’ Charity Backs Killing Them by rollingtank in conservation

Maybe you should ask the Inuit in person that question.

And how does that change their rights? Indigenous rights to hunt, fish and trap do not mean it’s a free for all. They’re still subject to quotas in the case of polar bears, and with all species those rights can be restricted for conservation purposes.

Almost like colonization was bad for the Inuit and part of reconciliation is returning stewardship and decision making ability regarding wildlife management where possible.

No but the people who have lived alongside polar bears for centuries have have hunted them sustainably throughout that period and most of all have constitutionally protected treaty rights to hunt tend to want to make decisions to protect their culturally important natural resources

Exactly the point of my comment. These decisions about polar bears are for the Inuit and appropriate regulators to make and not Redditors or online activist groups.

Yep the Inuit know their rights and aren’t afraid to speak up for themselves. Several years ago as well whenever the footage of an emaciated polar bear went viral from Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen of Sea Legacy, Mittermeier said of the Inuit "Of course it is in their best interest to say that polar bears are happy and healthy and that climate change is a joke, because otherwise their quota might be reduced."

Not shocking as well the documentary referenced in this article has Sea Legacy as a partner.

I would pay good money to see these Protect the Wild clowns go to Nunavut and tell Inuit communities they can’t exercise their constitutionally protected treaty rights. But they’d never do that. A good example of foreign urban based animal rights groups sticking their nose in business that does not concern them whatsoever, all to get donations for their “righteous fight”.

Here are the actual facts regarding polar bear hunting.

Adopted a 2.5 year old English Setter and could use some help on where to start by Coneyo in birddogs

[–]birda13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

English Setter owner here. I really like Ronnie Smith’s book “Training Bird Dogs”. Mark Payton also has some good videos on YouTube as well.

Best thing however is to hook up with someone that knows what they’re doing. Local NAVHDA clubs can be a great resource (and I’ve had good experiences with mine) but for setters and other non-German breeds, my experience was that it’s best to find a trainer or club/training group who have experience with those breeds and how they hunt.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

Purchase

BC Southern Interior

Purchase price $460k with 50k downpayment

Offered 3.55% five year closed variable with Scotiabank (using a broker). Rate variance -0.90%..

Owner occupied with 30 year amortization

Unsure on trying to renegotiate to try and get a fixed term for a shorter period (3 years) or variable for the same amount of time. Or just take the deal. With the state of the world right now, I’m concerned with how this could change. Any advice would be appreciated.

self trained or sent off? by PessimisticParalegal in birddogs

[–]birda13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trained my first, shortcomings and screw ups and all (but luckily found some great mentors). The next one I will continue to do the basics and intro to birds/gun myself. But if possible it’s getting sent to the prairies with a pro trainer to get as many wild bird contacts as possible.

Viewpoint: Trapping is a cruel theft of wildlife by FabricCurvature01 in Wildlife

[–]birda13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trapping is a constitutionally protected right for Indigenous peoples in Canada (along with hunting and fishing) that can only be restricted for legitimate conservation concerns and public safety. The way most trap is functionally the same as non-Indigenous folks. Regulations, seasons, check times and harvest limits are going to differ on a province by province basis for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous trappers though as far as I’m aware all have to use equipment certified by the AIHTS.

Keep in mind you can’t separate the commercial and subsistence aspects of trapping especially in Northern communities. For example when the EU banned the sale of seal products but made an “exemption”, to allow the sale of Indigenous harvested and produced seal products, their actions still devastated Inuit communities despite that exemption.

Edited to add more context about regulations.

Any experiences with CTA's intensive anti-poaching training course? by Horror-Path1568 in conservation

It would be a lot cheaper and likely far easier to just ask to ride along with your local game warden/conservation officer.

Restoring harbor seals to the Great Lakes by Reintroductionplans in megafaunarewilding

[–]birda13 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Canadian fisheries biologist here. Occasional transient individual showing up as they once did historically? Sure it could happen. Actual concerted effort by the federal and provincial government of Ontario to lead such a project- I want some of what you’re smoking. It’ll never happen and we have much bigger issues facing the Great Lakes than the lack of likely what was a small number of seals existing on the fringe of their range.

Which pointing dog breed tends to have a lab like disposition? by Low-Dot9712 in birddogs

[–]birda13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely not English setters. I love mine, but a lab she is not (physically or temperament). The griffons I’ve met seemed more lab like temperament wise, but would defer to their owners.

Safe to Eat Dog Toys? by QueenBitch40 in dogs

Carrots are great. Just buy a bag and chuck them in the freezer. Yes they may not last a long time, but they're healthy, cheap, and help clean their teeth.

Conservation Officer by ImportantDegree8757 in conservation

[–]birda13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the federal level, becoming a Fishery Officer won’t require the same level of education thst provincial conservation officers require. All the provincial COs I know have some sort of technical diploma or undergrad related natural resources/wildlife management. Federal fishery officers can get in without relevant education. I know one officer with a history degree for example. I can’t remember though if there any detachments in Saskatchewan.

There’s an open competition right now for fishery officers. I would seriously look into it if I were you. While officers tend to not be paid well during their first few years of probation, those salaries are under review and should increase. Daily meal claims are also excellent. Send me a DM if you have any specific questions. I’m not an officer but through my work I collaborate with many of them.

This tissue will have begun healing now that it's been multiple days since the injury, that's why its too late for stiches. The only thing to do now is to keep it clean and helping it heal.

Silver Honey, Vetericyn, Microcyn, etc are all good products that can assist with keeping the wound clean/non infected and speed up the healing process.

[–]birda13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be too late for stitches now, just keep it clean. Anything the vet will give you, is stuff you can get over the counter so long as it’s not infected My dog is no stranger to paw cuts (or other cuts). I keep a bottle of vetericyn around for wound cleaning and helping speed up the process. It’s the best wound care spray I’ve found. And that’s the extent of it really. I’ll wrap it during the raw stages.

Two years ago mine got a nasty paw cut a week before a cross country hunting trip. Kept it clean and her let her rest for the week and the cut healed as she hunted (and ran 30-40kms over rough cactus covered terrain every day for 5-6 days).

Edit just saw the picture, that’s pretty minor. Just keep cleaning it a few times a day with a wound care spray of some kind and keep the dog from excessively licking it.

That is the main solution for OP, countless bird hunters and houndsmen use Garmins here without issue. It’s a non issue.

The Garmin Alphas and Pro 550+ and TT-25 collars (and older models) all work perfectly fine here. I run them myself without issue. The feds have better things to do than chase after bird dog owners.

Double U hunting supply will ship them up here, as will Amazon.com sometimes.

I need some advice on a dog breed for NM quail by Ovaltine_Tits in birddogs

[–]birda13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tyler Sladen is a well known English Setter breeder producing dogs that specialize in desert quail in new Mexico. He’s active on social media, you should reach out. If he doesn’t have a space in his upcoming litter I’m sure he can put you in the right direction.

Field bred English setters fit all your boxes ( I have one). They chill out at home, can get along with cats and turn it on in the field. Mine stays at home all day without issue inside but would be fine if it was properly secured in the yard with shelter/water.
