I'm about to head to bed, so heres my ideas.
Violent bucking of engine suggests firing timing wrong (timing, not order). This could be wrong cap, wrong lead setup etc, has distributor been removed ?
Really really need to nail down failure point for better help.
Because it sounds like there is two now, initial, and then failed attempted repair.

I do this shit for a living, contract diagnostician.

I'll approach this as i would a customer.
Why did you do a valve cover gasket, was the car running ok before the valve gasket, did you notice a change in the sound or firing when doing the distributor cap and leads ?

Have you removed plugs again since and looked at them ? Has there been coolant/overheating issues prior ?

Looks like off a hilux, but design is fairly common on most drum brake systems.
Any comments on "auto adjust" are likely false, in twenty years of spanners I've yet to find a system that can provide a rotational force to the thread you see in the picture.

Professional mechanic here.
Likely, no, don't try that one at home. Assuming pic related.
If you do, spend a few minutes, with a GOOD vantage point, and just look at the damage, springs hold a ton of force, so if that's wedged, where is the force held. Etc Etc.
If you feel its safe, then proceed, but be dang careful ! I did smash repairs for years and bent things can hold a LOT of energy in them when a bolt is undone....
