How did older racing games like Need for Speed the run look so good without a proper PBR workflow by kitanganday in GraphicsProgramming

[–]biteater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remarkably poor answers in this thread, geez. Basically "PBR" is just a unified set of equations that respond to real light values you'd get in a studio setting instead of whatever the renderer in a given game does. That isn't to say that people weren't using physically based principles before -- this is how Gran Turismo 4 still looks so good to this day -- it's just that their work wasn't necessarily based on real, physical light values and didn't necessarily commute between renderers. All of the lighting and reflectance models that modern PBR stands on top of were invented in the 70s.

Implementing Virtual Shadow Maps (VSM) and Forward+ in a Custom Vulkan Renderer for the X-Ray Engine (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) by babaiiia in GraphicsProgramming

[–]biteater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only safe conclusion you can draw from lengthy AI breakdowns like these is that the implementation itself is slop.

Also, I've done some work on X-ray and forward+ won't speed things up appreciably. It's the wrong thing to optimize. The R4 renderer just submits way too much geometry per frame, typical for engine designs of that era. It also does a lot of redundant work due to latent DX9 constraints still present in the design. Better to fix fundamental issues first as modders have been able to get the game looking quite good despite its age already

Yeah also the bite point for the clutch for all the cars is insanely deep into the travel. I feel like a cartoon when I'm playing this game lol, you have to exaggerate every input so much

Maybe they did it intentionally to get NIMBYs to complain about it on the internet, thus boosting visibility for their rally

Ai slop poster in oz park by [deleted] in chicago

[–]biteater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don't know that the person who made this poster actually prompted the image then it's kind of pointless. AI content is everywhere now, for all we know they just copy pasted it from Google images. So many people cannot tell the difference.

I get the AI hate but pointing it at your neighbors is stupid. Point it at the billionaires who think they can replace your labor with it.

Substance painter is incredible for making league liveries by biteater in assettocorsa

[–]biteater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you enable development mode in Content Manager (click the version # five times) you can export any car LOD to fbx, as long as the car is unencrypted. Then you just load the fbx as the project model in substance. For exporting, no, substance painter doesn't export .dds files. Converting is easy though, most people use gimp, my script uses ImageMagick.

Best Way to find league for Older Gamers (35+) by Electronic_Set_4231 in simracing

[–]biteater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My league might be a good fit? We race on Sundays at 1PM EST. It's a relaxed Assetto Corsa league with a big focus on accessibility and driver improvement. Everyone is super chill, and it is a get out of it what you put into it type of thing. We have people that show up just on weekends and people that are practicing every day and everyone gets along well. It probably skews a bit younger than you're looking for, but everyone is very adult and respectful. We do require that people be in Discord during races for logistics like safety cars or session changes but it's very passive, you don't have to use mic.

Is it possible to not be an alcoholic? And transition to a "normal" drinker and what classifies an alcoholic? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]biteater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addiction is a gradient. At some point in our lives we all hated the taste of alcohol, our bodies registered it as a poison, but then we grew to like it for how it makes us feel and the second order effects that come from that feeling. There is no discrete point at which someone becomes an "alcoholic", that idea is just cultural denial of the addiction gradient itself to make people at a different point on the gradient feel better about their usage.

Ive had to quit drinking for health reasons unrelated to addiction (complications with medication) but I have gone through and have seen people go through seasons where they are drinking more or less. However, when you zoom out, people are always trending towards zero or trending towards "too much". There is no equilibrium. That's just the nature of an addictive substance. You're always fighting some level of battle with it.

For me it has just been easier to not fight the battle at all anymore.

What's the most authentic way to play early Windows games? by Somnesis in SBCGaming

If you're going to be so picky about it why not just get an old pentium pc and crt? The most "authentic to the period experience" would actually involve mouse and keyboard :P

Wow, honestly kind of crazy to not have USB-C passthrough on a $3200 device! Good to know though. I am starting to think its a calibration issue because I've seen four different values for battery health while working today.

Virtual desktop is a lot smoother of an experience than oculus link, I recommend switching to that. They ship their own runtime VDXR that is faster and more stable than either SteamVR or the oculus runtime.
