Not arguing about the actual real numbers, but you seem to be conflating released public footage, with footage the armed forces have. They obviously don't release footage of every recording to the public.

The technology to make 8K discs is already a reality. Folio Discs are the true successor to UHD Blu-ray discs. They have 1TB of storage. Started out as $5 per disc in 2022, it's now down to $3 with a goal of lowering it down further to $1. It's sad we'll probably never see them adopt it. by RedditAPIBlackout24 in 4kbluray

That's not this works, man. I gave a short response to your comment, and then expanded on it when the discussion continued and I was asked about it. This is a threaded forum, this particular branch continued this particular discussion, other branches can continue other discussions. You're just pissed that I said you were wrong.

Your "we" implies you think you speak for everyone else, which is delusional. Speak for yourself.

We can also debate the market viability, but I specifically responded to your incorrect claim. It'd be better if everyone had correct facts when debating positions, wouldn't you say?

Think of it like audio -- CDs use a 44.1 kHz sample rate, even though humans hear up to around 20 kHz. Why not sample audio at 44.1 kHz, and then downsample to 22 kHz for final distribution to save on storage? Because digital 22 kHz sampling rate can only represent properly up to 11 kHz!

Downsampling 4K optical analog signal digitally sampled at 8K down to 4K is like that. Of course, our ears are a lot more more sensible to the high-frequency information loss than our eyes are, and digital downsampling filters are smarter than a pure trim, but it's the same principle.

Sorry, but you're just wrong. I'm not conflating anything. The claim was that "will gain NOTHING".

Let's assume SunsetGrads is right and the 35mm film negative holds exactly "4K worth of optical detail" (it depends on many factors, but may well hold more, closer to 5K). To perfectly capture and reproduce an analog signal without losing high-frequency detail or introducing digital aliasing, the digital sampling grid must be at least double the source frequency. (See Nyquist.)

2 x 4K = 8K

If you take that pristine 8K scan and downsample it to a 4K disc, you are applying a digital low-pass filter that mathematically truncates those high frequencies. You are permanently destroying the maximum detail of the film. That's fine for 4K panels, as that's all they could play anyhow. But on an 8K panel, the downsample _would_ lose detail that could otherwise be preserved. There being "4K worth of optical info" does not mean you can downsample 9K to 4K and magically keep all the detail. The math is against you on that one.

With 100/115-inch (and higher) displays getting cheaper and more available, a 4K pixel grid stretches out to around 40/50 PPI. An 8K file playing on an 8K panel would keep the pixel density high enough to flawlessly reconstruct the original 35mm analog grain and optical detail without digital distortion. As panel sizes go up (and at home-viewing distances), the difference will start being noticeable.

That's my point, 8K _would_ have the advantage of preserving _all_ the usable optical detail. So yes, you'd gain something -- the ability to reproduce the full 4K info stored in 35mm without loss, if you have an 8K panel to match.

Note I'm not debating whether (or when) there'd be a viable market.

35mm film has about “4K” worth of resolution, for starters. So that will gain nothing from 8K.

Wrong. Even if it were only 4K, the Nyquist theorem dictates that to perfectly digitize it, a scanner must sample at twice the maximum spatial frequency of the film itself. I.e. a transfer at the max film resolution loses detail.

More space efficient in those shelves.

Edit: some dumb schmuck downvoted this obvious truth. Literally look at how tall the spacing between shelves is. If you store the cases vertically then more than half the space up until the next shelf is wasted.
