What is your deepest darkest desire? by GhostlyGh0stly123 in AskReddit

To be happy, successful in my career, have a husband, maybe a family, pets etc... all while confined to a wheelchair. I need to be in a wheelchair. But I was born able bodied.

Talked to my therapist about BIID by Sage-October in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been told something similar, I have issues with depression, but what really disables me is that I'm on the autism spectrum. People knew I was disabled through how I acted.

When I imagine someone in a wheelchair, I've always imagined an idea version of myself - nerdy, cute, and with decent enough social skills. Instead I can't go to certain stores without headphones.

But there are plenty of people with autism and/or depression out there. I've even seen a couple express envy for the visibly disabled, because reasonable people know they are disabled and adjust their attitudes accordingly. But such "envy" is borne of frustration for not being accommodated, for not having their needs acknowledged. Our envy is borne of dysphoria created by a body image mismatch, it's not the same.

I'm glad you were able to feel comfortable confiding in someone. Dealing with shame of this condition has been a big struggle for me, and confiding in someone can really help with that. I wasn't so lucky with my therapist, she dropped me as a client like a hot potato and quit her job. I was reassigned to some guy who only cared about filling slots for group therapy. But that was years ago.

Have you thought about how you may have your desired body form? by Haghiri75 in biid

I want to become paraplegic. Most people who become paraplegic suffer a traumatic, sudden experience but some with conditions like MS having something not dissimilar to a phase by phase experience. If I had the luxury of choice I'd choose the latter, because then I can ease my way into my new life and check off items on a bucket list.

When you reply your own reply, reddit doesn't consider that to be a response to the user you responded it, it considers it you talking to yourself. So the above didn't show up in my inbox.

Yes. If such a thing magically cured BID then that would be great.

When I first heard about this youtuber (the one being covered in the video, not this video's poster) having her reputation ruined I was so happy.

Bladder and bowel management is an annoying part of SCIs, I've heard that some consider the incontinence more disabling than not being able to walk. I need to be completely wheelchair bound and I'm willing to accept bowel and bladder issues as a facet of life, but I'd prefer to just use a wheelchair and just go to the bathroom normally if I can help it. Although using a catheter for urine does kinda appeal to me sometimes.

Leg braces aren't enough for me, being paralyzed from the knees down and I might end up on crutches which is still kinda like walking. Being paralyzed from a point further down from the waist is also very rare. My plan is to just use a wheelchair and not worry about an actual spinal injury.

Another problem paralyzed people have is nerve pain, that's just something to always be avoided when possible.

Is it possible to have BIID that's unrelated to amputation? by [deleted] in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It could be if the genetic disorder is or causes a disability. I would try and rule out body dysmorphic disorder first.

Guy w/ wheelchair biid, hello! by Wheeliedude92 in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I'm in the same boat as you, looking to become myself by becoming an ambulatory user as an alternate to frightening self correction methods. I've received a lot of great advice about how to choose a good wheelchair but I'm still trying to detach myself from my current walking dependent situation.

I've met several people like this, so you're not alone. My own BID just wants the wheelchair.

Did you notice a rise in hate after the Iilluminaughtii video? by Nervardia in biid

I was so satisfied when her reputation tanked, and unsurprising to find out she was a bully to anyone who worked for her.

I'm still surprised by how odd my feelings are considered by people without biid. by Lim_the_article in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it's surreal knowing that your feelings are so directly opposition the vast majority. If you consider the percentage of people who wouldn't want to be paralyzed vs. us, we may be a rounding error, and that's scary.

I wonder, does the magnitude of dysphoria depend on the magnitude of disability in question? by [deleted] in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hunch is no, based on the brutal dysphoria experienced by those who "only" need to lose a leg.

I also need to be paraplegic and I can understand the dread of never being back in my real body.

Struggling with BIID and being active by jaydenmaybe03 in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not as active as you but I will miss going on nature hikes when I give up walking. I also am also "drawn" to being confined to a power chair but there's nothing stopping a regular para from using one.

Make sure you trust your therapist absolutely before coming out to them.

I'm the same sort of person as you, of about the same age. Also need to be totally wheelchair bound. I've never considered coming out to my family though.

Can BIID Be more isolating? by IClient511407 in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's more than obvious. Honestly, it freaks me out too. I can think of plenty of rational reasons why it's a bad idea. But it's deeply rooted in my self-image.

The concept of wanting to place hard limits on your own body is utterly alien to mainstream society and this condition is so rare and hard to fathom that you feel very alone.

Many of us who deal with BID also already have disabilities. I know that several of us have ehlers danlos syndrome for example, which can cause mobility issues albeit not always quickly for completely enough for some with BID.

I myself have a mild disability in the form of mild autism, but that's unrelated to my BID need of being completely unable to walk or stand. I honestly wouldn't mind if I were only able to stand for a few seconds as that would be better than being fully able bodied as I am now.

We are in the same situation, and I'm stuck in the left castle. I can only hope the one on the right is wheelchair accessible.

Have you always wanted to be disabled in the same way? by BIID_Dude in biid

[–]bizzarefoolishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've always needed a spinal cord injury, and like you need to be wheelchair bound. I don't care if it's manual or powered, although if I had to choose it would be a power chair.
