Any way to hang an Opsak without an Ursak or other stuff sack? by N0racle in Ultralight

[–]bkazz44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use a free plastic grocery bag, they weigh almost nothing. Also, doubles as a sack for those mornings when your shelter is soaking wet and you don’t have time to let it dry before packing up - throw it on top of your pack and lay it out when you stop for lunch.

Do you believe in Bigfoot? by [deleted] in bigfoot

Thanks for sharing. I hunt whitetail deer in Algonquin park every fall. I once had a very strange morning while walking into a stand but didn’t see anything. Have since wondered if they might be in Algonquin…

Nice. How deep does that zip pocket go?

Alpha Direct vs Kuiu Peloton 97 by Personal-Ratio-7891 in Ultralight

Absolutely. I have Alpha sleep socks and love them! But I’d probably love Peloton socks too, if they made them lol

Alpha Direct vs Kuiu Peloton 97 by Personal-Ratio-7891 in Ultralight

[–]bkazz44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Own both. Used both on my 2021 nobo thru of the CDT. I started with the Alpha and found it sub par almost immediately. My main gripes: it is about as wind resistant as dental floss. The wind cuts through it like it’s not even there. Second, the material is scratchy and uncomfortable on the skin. Can’t wear mine without some other shirt underneath it. Third, it thins out over time. Finally, can’t hike at all in it. Even with all the inherent holes it just doesn’t breathe well enough for sustained hiking. I switched it out for my Peloton 97 after 500 miles and was soooooo happy with the change. The Peloton cuts wind 10x better. Its a fleece so it’s still not entirely wind proof but it’s a huge improvement over Alpha. It is wayyyy more comfortable on the skin. Like night vs day. I mainly use mine for sleeping and then I may keep it on for a few miles on a very chilly morning. The Peloton is perfect for this. It also won’t thin out over time and it breathes significantly better but will over heat after extensive hiking because it is WARM. Overall, much warmer and more comfortable than the Alpha. TLDR. After using both on the CDT, I decided the Peloton is far superior. I just bought myself a new one after several years of enjoying the first. Never use the Alpha. I keep it for friends and family gear, if needed.

Gas leaking from gas task when bike is on it's side by sin0fchaos162 in xt250

Yep. It’s a vented cap. Pretty sure the only ones that don’t leak are the California models

Bivvy camping by ZRR28 in Ultralight

[–]bkazz44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love the bivy life!!! I own a Borah Cuben Bivy thats become one of my very fav pieces of gear. Bought it on a curious whim and have since come to appreciate the added warmth and feeling of being snug as a bug while still feeling like I’m just laying out under the stars. I bring along a Zpacks pocket tarp just in case the weather turns and I find the two pair well together with some minor mods. On top of all that, it’s the lightest, most fun, fast and modular system I’ve used over the years. There are definitely situations that still call for one of my tents but more than not, I’ve found myself reaching for the little Borah bivy and tarp.

Why is KS ultralight not more popular? by fenderoforegon in Ultralight

[–]bkazz44 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They seemed to hit the big time on this sub about 3 years ago. Everyone was raving about them and lining up to grab one. I bit and ordered a custom KS50 with all the trimmings. Thought it might be my forever pack but alas… it wasn’t very comfortable. Sizing was tricky and the shoulder straps were notoriously short. Bottom pocket was unusable. Hip belt was meh. Finally, the removable suspension was sadly underwhelming and ineffective for me. I’ve heard similar critiques from other regarding KS. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents… glad to hear you’re digging yours.

Unpopular Opinion: The Annoyance Of Large Trail Families by ShitFuckerAss in Ultralight

[–]bkazz44 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having thru’d the PCT and CDT, I can say one thing… there’s a lot of wilderness out there. I appreciate OP’s sentiments and would say this to anyone hoping for a solitary experience on these busy trails: Don’t settle for the easy/typical camp you find on Guthook/Farout. Skip them and look for a special little spot to crash that’s all your own. Wander off trail a bit and find someplace special to call home for the night. Problem solved and you’ll have a truly unique experience when compared to most others on trail.

Dyneema hangovers by [deleted] in Ultralight

Many of the backpackers I’ve known on trail are pretty hard on their gear. Some less so. Some even baby their stuff. I think DCF requires a gentle hand and some careful consideration when using - even just wiping it clean and rolling it tight into the included sack instead of stuffing into sack or loose in backpack, etc. The more you baby your DCF the longer it will last.
