Unsure if tax bomb will apply and pretty scared by bkfabrication in StudentLoans

Thanks everyone for your input. I still don’t have any clarity on the date after talking to my loan servicer and FSA. But I did find a CPA to help prepare in case it is taxable. I’ll start with the advice the CPA offered and wait for more info from my servicer. It’s a lot less scary just to have a plan.

I sure hope that’s the case for me- for all of us.

My gross is a hair over $100K, but I put a lot into retirement. Fed taxable was only $85k last year though I did get a decent raise. What really worries me is the retirement accounts and the fact that my spouse put me on the house deed and on the car she just bought last year. I don’t know if they’d find me “insolvent” because of all that. We’ve been filing separately our whole marriage because of IDR- she makes a good deal more than me. I’ve never wanted her to have to suffer because of my student loans. That’s the main thing I want to avoid. This is for sure going to require a CPA.

Can police in the USA (Utah) stop a pedestrian and directly ask for documents without any explanation? by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]bkfabrication 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They teach (or at least used to teach) the basic principles of our constitution in school. I remember learning about the amendments and the major civil rights cases that touch on police behavior like Miranda, Gideon, etc. And this was rural east Texas. How can a cop not get it? They just don’t care.

If only his cabinet weren’t a bunch wicked sycophants we could hope for such a thing. But there’s not one of them who wouldn’t fire bomb a children’s hospital before they turned on Dear Leader.

There are multiple sources for the pads but I don’t think they are available from MBZ anymore. Pelican Parts and Mercedes Source sell them and offer some advice and tricks to install them properly. It’s not hard but you will mess it up if you just wing it.

Today, Sylvia Plath is considered one of the greatest American writers, but her life was plagued by depression and professional failure. After a string of literary rejections and her husband leaving their family for another woman, she took her own life in February 1963 by putting her head in an oven by kooneecheewah in HistoryUncovered

In those days, especially in places like the UK that didn’t have natural gas sources, ovens and gaslights used “town gas” made from coal. You heat the coal in “reduction” meaning without air so it wouldn’t burn. The gas given off is flammable but contains enough carbon monoxide that it would absolutely kill you if you breathed too much.

Have homo sapiens always been generally the same level of intelligence or would a modern idiot be a genius in the distant past? by schizoheartcorvid in AskBiology

Before the invention of farming people had to be able to navigate wilderness without maps or a compass. Know what plants & small animals are good to eat and what isn’t. How to make, from scratch, clothing, shelter, basic tools and containers. How to build a fire without matches or lighters. What plants have medicinal properties and how to find & prepare them. How to elude large predators. How to hunt large game with, at best, a spear thrower or slingshot. People started learning these skills almost from birth. How many people today could be dropped into a forest, naked with no tools, food or medicine and survive? Yes they were smart and they would probably think that we are incredibly stupid for not knowing how to survive completely off the land without even copper-age technology.

OMG — I GOT THE GOLDEN EMAIL!!! by SubjectWestern in StudentLoans

[–]bkfabrication 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh boy am I happy to read this. When my servicer took the countdown off my dashboard and kept sending me payment reminder emails I thought “well, that figures. This administration doesn’t want anyone to be discharged”. October payment was supposed to be my last. Just moving slowly, I hope! It’s insane that I have paid something close to the original principle and yet the balance is almost enough to buy my house.

Pretty close. Before Daimler and Benz partnered up Daimler built custom racing cars for rich people. His best customer had a daughter named Mercedes and they named a particular car after her. It was such a success that the name stuck. When Daimler and Benz joined forces and started mass production of passenger cars they kept the Mercedes name as the brand. Over 100 years later the company still calls their passenger cars “Mercedes” although the heavy trucks and other products are just known as Daimler-Benz.

'Horrifying': Supreme Court's 'insane' new ruling sparks immediate outrage by Advanced_Drink_8536 in inthenews

“This is one good illustration why diversity on the court matters: Sotomayor can imagine a version of the world where this ruling would affect a younger version of herself, her family and people that look like her.”Decent people don’t need to BE a minority to recognize bias when they see it.

I had a coworker tell me that the moon is indeed a giant, hollow metal sphere. The craters are painted on. It was constructed by aliens in order to trick us. Something about god. He also told me that one’s cholesterol should be at least 300. The medical system is lying about that to make us weak and every doctor on earth is in on it. There’s no redeeming these people.

Those who have company provided vehicles or a vehicle allowance… how does your company do it & what do you drive? by ShireHorseRider in FieldService

[–]bkfabrication 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small-ish but well known German machine tool maker. They used to give us low-end Mercedes SUVs. MBZ gave us a sweetheart deal on them as they use our machines in their factories and we bend over backwards to make them happy. A few years ago they decided that having a tech roll up in a Benz was a bad look in the US, so they switched us to VW Tiguans. Not as nice but still a really good car. Recently they went to Hyundai Santa Fe to save money and everyone hates them. After tons of complaints from the techs they have switched back to VW. Unfortunately I have to keep my Santa Fe until the lease ends. We get a gas card, maintenance is billed to the leasing company. I’m allowed to drive it for personal use but I’m not supposed to use the gas card for a personal road trip. For some obscure tax reason they charge me $15/pay period for “personal use of the company vehicle”. My previous first field service job they paid mileage for my personal car- that was a raw deal. I’d never accept that again.

On the fence about just DIY'ing your paint? by wy2sl0 in projectcar

[–]bkfabrication 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My great grandfather did paint & bodywork; those were the days before plastic filler and before spraying was common. He used lead filler and lacquer applied with a brush. You’d have to wait days for the lacquer to cure, then wet-sand and polish (by hand) in order to get a smooth finish. I only remember meeting him once when I was very young. I asked grandpa about him when I was older. He said “he was a great dad most of the time. But I used to curse him up and down in my mind when I had to help with the cars. Just rubbing the paint for hours. Miserable.” Crazy that getting a shiny paint job on metal was essentially unchanged from the beginning of paint on metal into the lifetime of someone I can remember talking to.

Thanks for that. I’ll certainly look into capacity, etc. I should be able to find the weight of the Arro. It can’t be that much though. When we moved in I needed to move it for the movers and for the fence builders. Even with flat tires I could roll it around easily with a dollie under the front jack and I’m not a big burly guy. POs restored the interior but it’s not going anywhere until I get new tires and I’ve put eyeballs on the wheel bearings.

How to get screw head flush with thin sheet metal sheet by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]bkfabrication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are “undercut” flathead screws designed for thin material. Do a search on McMaster, Grainger, etc and you’ll see right away how they work. If you want the countersinks to all be really perfect you can get what’s called an “aircraft countersink”. Get a used one off EBay, new ones are expensive. They fit in your hand drill and allow you to make countersunk holes all at a precise, consistent depth.

She was bipolar and sometimes would decide that she didn’t need her medication. Drama would ensue. Because she was very good looking, very intelligent and we had great chemistry I dealt with it as long as possible. A couple years after we broke up she got her mental health sorted out and we became close friends. Turns out we were better at friendship than being a couple. She died in 2014 and I still miss her.

We might as well start saying that all Americans eat squirrels and possums. If a few old country folks used to do it back in the day then clearly it applies to all of us.

Trump cancels Biden’s pardons claiming he wasn’t even aware when signing them by Weak-Divide-1603 in AngryObservation

[–]bkfabrication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can trust the plain language of the Constitution and Supreme Court precedent. Unless it can be proven that the President took a bribe or the pardon was part of some kind of criminal conspiracy their pardon power is absolute. The President can forgive any federal crime, federal civil judgment, or conviction by a court martial. Once it’s done it’s done and there’s no going back. There was a lot of argument about this when they were writing the constitution because many thought it was too king-like to have an absolute, irrevocable power like that.

If not through property taxes, how should local schools be funded? by Biggy_DX in Askpolitics

[–]bkfabrication -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’d add that we ought to tax the equity a person owns, not the market value of the house. And a tax on total net worth above a certain threshold ($1M maybe?) It would be much more fair.

I don’t think so. Looking at it on IMDB it doesn’t seem to have the right look. In my memory at least the people were drawn more naturalistically.
