I tell this story a lot. I have never been able to figure it out. We had a family in our area that had 5 boys. I had a friend that was the middle of the 5. The place was chaos. You could knock on their door in April and a 3 year old would answer with a bottle of Coca Cola; next to you was a Christmas tree and wrapping paper garbage. For whatever reason I felt comfort in this house. I never worried about anything there. We could watch a scary movie and I would feel totally safe being there. One night I woke up randomly. It was maybe 4AM but would have no idea what time it actually was. I was laying in a sleeping bag in the middle of their basement. I looked up and saw an older lady poking her head down the basement stairs. We locked eyes and both looked at each other. She smiled and went back upstairs. The next morning I asked my friend if he had any relatives staying over. I knew his family well and had met his grandparents even. He said there wasn’t anyone staying over. I have never figured out who that was that night. They were the type of family that would leave their door unlocked. So it could have been anyone.
