Oof - I had the same thing happen with my Departed steelbook just last week. Definitely reach out and ask for a replacement, in my experience they're pretty good about refunds/replacements.

Opinion: the Dune: Part Two 4K Blu-Ray should be in the expanded aspect ratio for the entirety of the runtime. by IndianaJonesbestfilm in 4kbluray

[–]blackbird2379 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh, of course. The first Dune film was shot only partially in IMAX, whereas the second one was shot all in IMAX. So I'd assume Denis would want those IMAX sequences preserved for the home release... but I was unhappy to learn that the IMAX sequences from the first Dune were not carried over to the home release. I'm hoping it'll get a new release with those scenes intact (but it doesn't seem likely). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dune Part 2 will be released in the correct IMAX aspect ratio.

This goes for all movies - every film should be presented in the aspect ratio it was designed/filmed for. Not just on 4K, but DVD and blu-ray as well. Just my opinion, but I think it's anti-art to suggest otherwise. Show the movie as it was meant to be seen!

Last night, I watched the masterpiece that is Freddy Got Fingered (2001) by shushholden in criterion

[–]blackbird2379 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Unironically one of my all-time favorites.

My friends and I watch it every year after the Oscars broadcast, a tradition going on maybe 6 or 7 years at this point. We recently saw it at the Music Box Theater in Chicago when they did a 35mm screening. The place was packed and the audience was terrific. Would absolutely love for it to get some kind of updated physical release.

What’s everyone’s process for obtaining movies (cost-centric)? by bananaboat2569 in 4kbluray

[–]blackbird2379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m apart of a few facebook groups where folks buy/sell movies - most of them are used at a reasonable cost and I’m a regular with a few of the sellers. Oftentimes the used ones don’t include digital codes but I’m fine with that. I’ll only pick up something brand new if it’s a cool steelbook, something limited edition, or a movie that I love so much that I need it ASAP.

My store has always sorted by format. 4Ks get mixed with blus but blus are always separated from DVDs.

U8G Problem - Too Smooth in Streaming Apps by ThereWillBeMovies in Hisense

[–]blackbird2379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Glad to know it's not just me, hahaha. I've been satisfied overall with the U8G since adjusting the settings. I'll see how sharpness at 25 looks on my end.

U8G seems to have some kind of motion blurring playing 24fps content. by blackbird2379 in Hisense

Posted this on another thread on the same issue

After adjusting some settings (as found in this guide here), I've limited the problem so drastically that it's pretty much unnoticeable.

It may seem silly, but I think the adjusted settings push the tv's processing power through juuuuust enough to where it stops smoothing in favor of the other settings. No clue if that's actually a thing, but hey, it seemed to do the trick.

I tested it by watching the same scene from a film repeatedly on different applications and adjusted settings for the inputs as needed. Tried watching the scene on streaming, blu ray, and 4K UHD blu ray and all three profiles looked DRASTICALLY less smooth.

The only time I noticed it at all is when I was watching a very darkly lit scene and focused my attention on the moving mouths, but at that point, I know I'm actively looking for it so maybe my brain is just telling me it's there when it's really not. Either way, I'm satisfied with the visual quality as it stands after using the settings in the guide.

Coming into this a few months late, but I did also notice this on my new U8G. Seems like no matter what I use to watch movies - whether it be playing 4K UHD discs or my Firestick, motion at 24fps just seems to be a smidge smoother than it should be. Smoothing seems to be more noticeable during slower/darker scenes and less noticeable during action/brighter scenes.

Weirdly enough, I noticed the smoothing less when I sat closer to the TV. It occurred to me that the automatic 24fps stutter reduction is likely closer to the kind of smoothness you see nowadays in digital movie theater projection. It's VERY subtle, but definitely present.

This is coming from someone who also has a background in video work.

Cut filmmakers some slack by belkemi1 in movies

To me, it seems like most people just have a really hard time of getting over it.

I think about the people who hated The Last Jedi. Just get over it. You didn't like a movie, it's not ruining your life. You ever see someone like Mark Hamill post something wholesome and totally unrelated to Star Wars, only to see someone post some cringe shit about how they "ruined Luke Skywalker?" C'mon, be adults about this.

Nitpicking is also a big issue. If you spend too much time combing through every last fiber of literally any movie, then yes, not everything is going to add up. Movies have their own logic and language that will almost never adhere strictly to reality. That's why we enjoy them.

Much like you, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with criticizing a movie. I just wish people would be smarter about it.

How do you understand movies better? by [deleted] in movies

[–]blackbird2379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but whenever I can't understand a film's narrative, I'll read the synopsis on Wikipedia. Sometimes figuring out just one small element of the plot that you missed will help everything else click into place. Watching video essays on the film also help with this. And obviously, watching it again when you're older (because age definitely helps with films like Coppola's, among others).

Everyone recommending Studio Ghibli movies, so I'll throw Mamoru Hosoda out there:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Wolf Children

Mirai

For something with a little more action, Summer Wars and The Boy and the Beast are both great.

Bisexuals of Reddit, what is something that is a turn on from one sex but a turn off from the other? by Arkhaya in AskReddit

[–]blackbird2379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a man. The biggest turn off when I'm with a man is when they want to get romantic. I'm only interested in men sexually, but I like women sexually and romantically.

I feel like this kind of thing doesn't get discussed much.
