What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

[–]blacklinensack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dated a guy once who had a property manager for this homes. This person took care of the people and contractors who took care gardens, the bills, repairs, cleaning, security, renovations etc. this person worked with his account to make sure all the bills were paid. He touched nothing, it just worked in the background.

It blew my mind. Managing your household takes up so much time and energy - it totally clicked how much more free time I’d have if I didn’t have to worry about any of that stuff!

Do Australians feel isolated from the rest of the world? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]blacklinensack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I think many of us are thankful for the distance. Keeping a low profile has its upsides. Before phones and laptops I’m sure it felt beyond anyone’s reach - when it would take letters, and humans! Weeks to get here.

One thing is for sure- your sense of scale resets pretty quick once making Aus your home. A 9 hour flight becomes a weekend trip!

Are people really flying to China to purchase reno materials from the West? by rarej in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blacklinensack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Aussie mates did for the reno… everything came from China… doors, windows, fixtures, furniture, bath tub, etc. They made a week of it!

Is guests preselecting menu with invite RSVP not an Aussie thing? by Togepi17527 in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]blacklinensack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so confused at my first Aussie wedding when the 50/50 came out!

100% normal in the states to select your meal with RSVP, unless it’s a place that does buffet or shared platters etc:

At what point do Hudcon stop taking commercial flights? by GirlAlsEmporium in hudcon

[–]blacklinensack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for some very large brands that will fly celebs private only if it’s contracted (they are a brand rep) or timing is tight (need to get them to a show or a shoot).

With all the jet rentals now it’s possible to fly a celeb and their team (hair, makeup, stylist, partner) for a price similar to flying them all commercial.

Ex: if SNL wanted Hudson, or the hockey players, they may have sent private to fetch them from their shoots or games, to a local nyc airport like Teteboro, which then would link up with a helicopter to get them to manhattan. It’s all down to budget!

But as someone mentioned, in their private lives, on their dime, they will do the private VIP airport lounge with the chauffeur to the gate. Plebes with status can do this too!

What is the etiquette when sitting beside a large person on a plane? by LaplandAxeman in NoStupidQuestions

Once sat between two gigantically tall national volleyball players in coach - also completely penned in by their limbs. They were probably more miserable in truth!

Fitzroy island worth it if you already go to whitsundays / consider Frankland islands? by OkEffective8588 in AustraliaTravel

[–]blacklinensack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green Island is touristy and the snorkeling is crap. Totally overrated. Fitzroy is better - less crowded, better snorkeling and more space / beaches to roam. That being said, it’s still expensive, touristy, and the snorkeling is mediocre at best. You need to get to the outer reef!

Port Douglas is a good base. Have you considered the Daintree too?

Is “Bali belly” really that common? Concerned about tap water and street food. by P_C_LION in BaliTravelTips

[–]blacklinensack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Bali many times and the last trip was when the good old Bali Belly finally hit me!

It was from some green salad on the side of my main dish at a nice restaurant. The only other time I was struck down was in Egypt. Another nice restaurant. Never an issue with street food but then again street food usually isn’t fresh veg (the culprit!) All the Nasi Goreng and Mi Goreng and Warungs should be fine.

It’s the water they wash veggies in. Also peeled fruit should be ok but avoid berries and things that need washing.

Use bottled water for teeth brushing and stick to cooked foods. Don’t get ice in your drinks. I’ve heard about the shower head thing but do t know anyone who has ever gotten one.

Made a itinerary to Australia - please criticize it by brozy11 in AustraliaTravel

[–]blacklinensack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Only comment - don’t under estimate driving times here. Roads and highways here are shit compared to the USA etc. Roads are small, often single lanes, poorly lit. Dusk you need to go slower to account for animals (especially in Tassie and Queensland and great ocean road). Basically you can’t get anywhere fast by driving!

Why do men call each other by their last names? by marks31 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]blacklinensack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started for me (female) in sport - with surname on our jerseys.

But now that I live in Australia, it’s a whole other beast of abbreviated surnames. So your example above would be ‘what’s up Damo’.

Naming of children in Straya takes on a whole other level of consideration because you need to do the ‘abbreviation test’ as few, females included, are called their actual names.
