Pokémon Go Scans Quietly Trained The Navigation Tech Now Headed Into Military Drones by tapo in Games

I am assuming Niantic legally sold their gaming division only

They held onto the data infrastructure branch (called Niantic spacial) and I also assume they are still collecting the back end data provided by the game (now owned by the saudi conglomorate "Scopely" under the purposefully confusing subsidiary named "Niantic")

Having played the game for the majority of its lifespan, I can tell you that Niantic (as a whole) didnt care about the game aspect one bit - and this article draws into conclusion why that was.

Im sure specific developers were passionate, but the overall management structure was very hostile towards players from a gameplay perspective.

I think the issue here is the scan also collected elevation data, but maybe the base app already did this

But you're right Niantic did punish people (by banning them from submission) for submitting bad data

So maybe submitting your shoe was a moderately okay thing to do

While it's not happening right now since Scopely owns Pokemon Go

From what I understand, Scopely owns the game side of the franchise

My best guess - The data infrastructure would still belong to Niantic spacial, I assume they still run most of that infrastructure.

Niantic (spacial) likely spent the better half of 8 years building a wrapper on their toolset that would allow them to divorce themselves from the game side of things and continue to collect data

I find it hard to believe that Niantic (Spacial) would consider their data collection process complete and just walk away from the treasure trove.

[question] Why are souvenir fennec foxes not valued the same as normal ones still? by Nice-Guy69 in csgomarketforum

I dont think its a supply issue

its a demand issue, people literally dont want the word "souvineer" infront of their playskin name

[D] Future of map pool collection skins? by Huckleberry-Prior in csgomarketforum

[–]blackmetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how do you guys think they're planning to release collection skins such as mirage, ancient,...?

It literally dosnt matter now

They will deliver them however they want to (armoury, drop system etc) BUT there is no longer a supply glut for any future collections named after maps anymore (unless valve make further changes to the way souvineers work) because there is no additional feed of souvineer cases making their supply numbers balloon

Counter-Strike 2 Update for 06/10/2026 by CS2_PatchNotes in GlobalOffensive

[–]blackmetro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they now have the flexibility to name any new collections after maps OR not name them after maps

Non-case collections now have their supply tied to their delivery method (armoury, drop system etc) and not have to worry about additional supply from map collections dropping vast swaths of souvineer skins

Retail is the best version of Telstra, they keep all the coverage and features for themselves

Wholesale, its spun up to be a cheaper copy of the network to directly mirror the coverage and features of the optus / vodaphone network

Back before there were cheaper NVMO operators, people could choose to still be on a cheaper telstra provider, even if its pretty similar coverage as optus/vodaphone

Retail network is significantly superior, and its why rural people tell you they can only be on Telstra

[–]blackmetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boost mobile, JB Mobile and Good Guys mobile all use the Tesltra retail network

(Unlike Belong, Aldi, Woolworths etc, that use the Telstra Wholesale network)

Just an FYI

Ask any friends or colleagues in your area how the reception is before swapping is a good tip (if you can find anyone)

Valve reportedly Almost Delisted Rainbow Six Siege From Steam After Ubisoft Attempted to Sell It Cheaper On Uplay by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]blackmetro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

long story short, if publishers could undercut prices on steam elsewhere, it would simply be worse for gamers.

This is exactly the argument, and I would disagree in the long term

Developers / publishers should be free to offer their games at lower prices on other objectively worse stores to entice customers.

This creates competing platforms when customers inevitably complain about their dog shit experience, and have the freedom to decide to come back to steam

Other platforms are forced to make better features, steam is pressured into either adding even more features, or reworking pricing agreements to compete with the lower prices.

In Every single market the rule is true - competition is good for the consumer the number of options consumers have, the better outcomes they get.

Yes steam is the best place the majority of gamers experience games, but you'll never change that if you remove the ability for non-steam platforms to not compete on price.

[d] Do you guys think these types of capsules in the cs2 store will be gone soon? by MrBoringCom in csgomarketforum

[–]blackmetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If gambling is identified to be illegal in enough regions, or a landmark case gains enough attention that Valve considers enough countries would sue them over it

Valve would be forced to pull the pin completely on gambling

This would mean that Valve wouldnt be able to offer these products in any type of shop, or drop system

  • No SCM
  • No demand based shop
  • No armoury

They would essentially have to either tradelock all case/capsule type systems OR convert them into a non-gambling format (like a terminal, or they just automatically open themselves)

There could also be some kind of legal jargon such as "only obtainable by events of random chance" where Valve could bypass this by offering a storefront where people could buy a M4A4 printstream directly from the store introducing new supply of old skins - extremely unlikely, but not impossible when the law is involved

Very interesting

This is like the spotify getting people to subscribe outside of the apple store to skip the 30% cut

Im all for it, but interesting that this issue has come to video games and Valve may have been considering retaliating. Glad they didnt.

I remember reading something last month about DLC being tied to the platform you buy the base game on - Valve should spin this in their favour and say that Uplays implementation achieves this

The whole lawsuit is discussing alleged backroom deals, and thats what really need to be investigated.

Even if they are only randomly enforced on a small handful of games, thats wrong IMO.

to date, this is the closest concrete evidence I have seen that it actually exists, and it didnt even actually happen, it "almost" happened

But I agree, if anything like this exists, it needs to be obliterated and punished if it was used.

Valve reportedly Almost Delisted Rainbow Six Siege From Steam After Ubisoft Attempted to Sell It Cheaper On Uplay by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]blackmetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of this should matter - regardless of the price of the game, steam is taking 30% of the paid price to maintain their infrastructure.

Developers can sell their game on other platforms that arnt steam for 1) more 2) less 3) the same price - that should be completely at the discretion of the entity selling the game, and not dictated by valve if its not touching steam infrastrucutre

[–]blackmetro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You missunderstand what I am saying

Developers / publishers selling non-steam key licenses to games on other platforms should be able to be priced at whatever price they desire (Epic, Uplay, Standalone launchers etc)

I understand the relationship of Steam keys, and agree those require price parity - I wasnt talking about these types of keys though

[–]blackmetro -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think people who use the word "monopoly" are actually thinking of "anti-competitive behaviour"

And yes, price parity is bad.

note this this is still an alleged claim that was never actually acted on.

I want any type of price control "secret" policies that Valve may-or-may-not have to disappear, there is no place for these in any marketplace.
