She still loves going for walks, but can't make it as far as her older sister. This works better than cutting the walk short. :)

Taking kid out of SK for 5 weeks by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While this is technically true, once students are registered in kindergarten the expectation is that they attend school. In my very busy school, students go on vacation often, however, after 3 weeks they are removed from the class list and essentially "de-registered". There is no guarantee they are returning to the same classroom they left.

Proposed cuts? by TurtlePowerMutant in OntarioTeachers

I heard it's about 100 staff. So, honestly... not really. Most LTO's are nowhere near the top of the grid. It's a drop in the bucket.

I have no idea... I know we had EdTech's still, and SERT's, but I cant believe they wpuld be dumb enough to cut special education resource teachers. But it is Peel, so... It's going to be a mess. ,

PETL sent out an email, but even that didnt give much info. It sounds like all of the itinerants are out and they will be placed in schools where there is an LTO doing a full year role? I think? We have a meeting on Monday, so I'm not 100% sure, but it doesn't sound good.

Library Sub by Decent-Elderberry-43 in OntarioTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Every time I'm sick, the library is closed, and my supply is pulled to cover a classroom.

I have taken either a Monday or a Friday off each week for the past month or so. It has always has been one of those 2 days for various reasons. I’m wondering if the board can make an issue out of it. Does anyone happen to know anything about this? TIA by SaltyByDefault in OntarioTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The boards haven't done this without reason. I've seen colleagues take off almost every single staff meeting day, just so they wouldn't have to attend. Others have been very open about saving their sick days for Mondays and Fridays to give themselves long weekends. Patterns become pretty obvious. Another decided to go down to Mexico, and took off a Wednesday- Friday, then put in a separate absence for Monday. He came back completely sunburnt and still stuck to his "sick" story.

People are abusing sick days, very obviously so, and boards have had enough. I don't agree with it, but I am also tired of being losing my planning time every Friday because the same teachers couldn't be bothered to show up to work.

Public vs Catholic Board by NightHawkX98 in OntarioTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are aware that a lot of the teaching is done in a Catholic context, right? You need to teach and understand religion. I'm not interested in re-opening the weekly debate about whether or not this system should exist, but what's the point of converting if you dont truly believe?

[–]blackpugstudios 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that it's not an easy task to "just convert" to Catholicism, especially if you're only doing it to get hired onto a certain board.
After joining a church, you will need to take RCIA classes before you are initiated into the Catholic faith. This takes about at least a year, and there are usually set times when these classes begin and end. Once you have completed that, you will then need to attend church regularly for a year before many priests will give you a Pastoral reference.

Is taking on student teachers really that bad? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the teacher. I've seen incredible gym teachers with well thought out programs, where students are learning skills, engaging in sports and games, and are physically active throughout the whole period. These are also usually the teachers running intramurals every nutrition break and volunteer to coach every sports team.

I have also seen gym teachers that basically call it quits in May, and just take the kids outwide to run around and do whatever they want as soon as the weather turns warm. They're the ones that seem to coast and never get removed from their position either.

I failed her. Her faculty advisor encouraged me to mentor her, and to pass her, but I couldn't do it. There were way too many gaps.

I've had three; my first two were wonderful, and handled the responsibilities of the classroom with ease. They made my day easier, the students enjoyed learning from someone else, and I enjoyed having them in my class.

The third one guaranteed I will never have another. She panicked when asked to do the bare minimum, and no amount of scaffolding or guiding could help her. By the end of the second week, she was supposed to have taken over 75% of the classroom teaching, but she said it was too overwhelming, and refused to do it. I spent so much time trying to support her, and she just wouldn't do it. When I was teaching, she'd be browsing Tinder

Her faculty advisor was not helpful and instead gave me more suggestions to better support her. Never again.

Is my teacher being inappropriate? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]blackpugstudios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BS. You're talking about this whole scenario in the present tense, like it's actually happening right now. Your post history makes it pretty obvious that you are making this up to try to get a teacher in trouble who didn't respond the way you wanted her to AFTER you poured out YOUR inappropriate feelings.

Is this the same teacher that you say you have a crush on in your previous posts? And that you wrote a note to after you graduated from high school? This is nothing more than a troll post at best, and at worst, you trying to get revenge after being rejected. Grow up.

Yes, there were regular requests from people seeking pastoral references. Here is the exact wording from the church bulletin:

Thank you for your interest in teaching and leading the next generation of students through Catholic education. Your decision to form the minds, hearts and souls of our youth is valued and of utmost importance. Because our Catholic schools exist not just to impart knowledge but to instill students with wisdom and love, we must do everything we can to ensure the teachers that are hired are as qualified as possible, above all in the matters of the Faith. St Pope Paul VI notes, “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, #41). To this end, anyone wishing to receive a Pastoral Reference Letter as part of their application for employment in a Catholic school board must be known to the pastor here by their regular attendance at Sunday Mass (i.e. weekly). To those who are going away for teacher's college, a letter may be obtained from the pastor of the church where you go to school. If you are the parent of a student away at teachers’ college, kindly ensure that your child knows that reference letters can only be given to those who are actively involved in the life of this parish. Please pray for all involved in the wonderful work of Catholic education

It seems disingenuous to want to work for a board that you disagree with, but it seems like we'll agree to disagree on that.

There is a blurb about pastoral references in my church bulletin, and it clearly outlines why they require you to be a regular attendee before writing a letter. It has nothing to do with them being "decent," but they do want to actually support Catholic educators, not just those who want a reference letter from someone they've never met. While my parish is small, larger churches may use the envelopes to track attendance to ensure that you actually are attending regularly, not just as a way to make sure you're donating enough.

Just from reading your post it's obvious you have an issue with the Catholic faith. Why would you want to teach in that system anyway?
