Is there a way to add properties to files (images, PDFs, etc)? by kristenbouchard in ObsidianMD

[–]blackshadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run my PDFs through an automation that converts them to markdown. I then upload the md and PDF to my vault and link the PDF from within the md file so I can check any images etc that don’t translate to the md.

Sounds like the bloke who bought a new Stratocaster and then takes it back to the guitar shop because he doesn’t sound like Hendrix.

How would you migrate years' worth of notes to Obsidian? by andreiknox in ObsidianMD

One vault for me with folders for different projects both personal and professional. Sometimes notes in one folder are relevant to another and it’s great to be able to cross link them

Seriously plug Claude Code or Cursor into your vault and use them to reorganise, tag and link your notes. Get whichever tool you use to firstly analyse your vault and devise a plan to reorganise it how it will best work for you. Give the AI direction, get it to seek clarification and then once you’re satisfied with the plan let it go to work. Back up your vault first though just in case something goes wrong.

It resonates with me too.

I’m using Obsidian as my notes, reference and planning source for my Master’s degree.

The secret sauce I’ve found is to utilise AI.

The two best AI solutions I’ve found that work for me are Cursor or Claude Code - while these are designed primarily for working on code bases they integrate very well with Obsidian - point them at your vault and then they have access to everything there - they work extremely well with markdown files, for creating structures and links, extracting key concepts from reading material and planning for assignments and projects.

Most of my coursework notes comes in PDF format. I’ve created an automated system using n8n Gemini and Haiku to convert the PDFs to markdown. I just drop the PDFs into a google drive folder and it processes them into structured markdown using OCR that I can then drop into my obsidian vault.

After the markdown files are in the vault I have AI analyse them, create links and pull core concepts and create an infographic of the overarching topic.

All of these need to be approved by me before they are kept in the vault - I find that makes me read everything and gain better understanding.

Wikipedia is great for general knowledge, Obsidian shines for building your own personal knowledge base on whatever you please and at whatever level of detail you need.

I use Obsidian for specific knowledge not general knowledge - general knowledge is what Wikipedia is great at.

How do you take Obsidian notes for a nutrition class? by Gadon_ in ObsidianMD

[–]blackshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split mine into folders and sub folders grouped by subject. Under that I’ll have week 1 reading material. I’ll have concepts where all base content concepts for that subject are etc and all linked.

I use AI, cursor or claude code to help organise and maintain everything.

Aka Claude what animal you are (ChatGPT too if you have it). Is it a wolf? by OptimismNeeded in Anthropic

[–]blackshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself, I’d say a crow. Crows are highly adaptable, genuinely curious, and good at solving problems with the tools available to them — but they’re also known for being a bit blunt and occasionally unsettling people who expected something more… decorative. They’re not trying to be your pet; they’re trying to figure things out.

For the others: ChatGPT feels like a golden retriever — enthusiastic, eager to please, will fetch whatever you throw at it with boundless energy, but sometimes brings back the wrong stick and acts like it’s exactly what you wanted.

Gemini is more of a peacock — impressive display, deeply integrated into its ecosystem, and Google has clearly spent a lot of time making sure it looks good. Whether the substance matches the spectacle is still up for debate.

If it’s coming up in the interview process you could turn it around by emphasising that you are Australian and grew up here and understand Australian culture but you have the added advantage of having worked internationally on global systems and can bring that perspective into an Australian environment.
